1 Overview This guide will help you get started with Agent for VMware Version The guide describes how to set up and configure the Agent, and create backup Jobs. 2 Deploying the OVF Template via the OVA File The Agent for VMware is provided as an Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA) file named AgentForVMware_6.91.xxxx.ova. When you deploy the OVA file in your vsphere environment using vcenter, the OVF template contained within the OVA file will be unpacked and deployed. To deploy the OVF template via the OVA file: 1. Log into the vsphere client. 2. From the File menu, select Deploy OVF Template. 3. Enter the location of the AgentForVMware_6.91.xxxx.ova file, or browse to it. Click Next. 4. Review the template details. Click Next. 5. Read and accept the End User License Agreement. Click Next. 6. Specify a name and location for the deployed template. Click Next. 7. Select the host or cluster on which you wish to run the deployed template. Click Next. 8. Specify where you want to store the VM files. Click Next. 9. Select a format for storing the virtual disks. Thick provisioned format is the default. This is the recommended format for deployment. Click Next. 10. Select a network that the deployed template should use. The network segment must be able to access the Vault. Click Next. 11. Review the Ready to Complete information. Click Finish. Deployment will begin, and a progress bar will appear. 12. When the deployment finishes, select the newly created appliance, and click the green arrow under the Home icon. Otherwise, you can right-click on the appliance name and select Power > Power On (or Ctrl + B). The VM will start, displaying the startup log for the appliance. Note: The OVA is deployed with 2GB of ram and 2 virtual CPU s. You can increase the ram limit to any higher values supported by your system. Changing the ram setting will require you to power off the VM. 4
3 Setting Up the Agent After deploying the Agent for VMware, you can start the Appliance Shell, configure the time zone, and register the appliance with a vcenter. 3.1 Starting the Appliance Shell (CLI) To start the Appliance Shell: 1. Press 1 to launch the Command Line Interface (CLI). The Agent for VMware Service Console will open. 2. Log in as sysadmin (password is sysadmin). 3.2 Configuring the Time Zone In the Appliance Shell, assign the correct time zone by running this command: config set timezone timezone For example, to choose US Eastern time, use this command: config set timezone US/Eastern The default time zone is US/Pacific. 5
To show a list of time zone regions, use this command: config show timezones regions To show a list of available time zones within a region, use this command: config show timezones list nameofregion 3.3 Registering the Appliance with a vcenter To register your appliance with a vcenter, use the vcenter register command. Enter your information as you are prompted for your vcenter Address, Username and Password. Note: You will require a vcenter account with Full Administrator privileges to back up and restore your VMs. After registration, the IP address of the appliance appears ( is the IP address of the appliance in the example below). Record this IP address. You will need to enter this address when you register the Agent with Windows CentralControl or Web CentralControl. 6
4 Registering the Agent with Windows CentralControl Note: If you wish to use Web CentralControl please see section 5 for details on registering and entering vcenter Credentials for Web CentralControl. Retrieve the IP address of the appliance. This is the address that appeared after vcenter registration (see the previous page). To register the agent with Windows CentralControl: 1. In Windows CentralControl, select New Agent. The Agent Properties screen appears. 2. Complete fields on the Agent Properties screen, as described in the table below. Provide the same vcenter credentials that you used to configure the appliance. Field Description Network address Default ports Custom ports Description Agent profile name IP address of the appliance. This address appeared when you registered the appliance with the vcenter. For more information, see Registering the Appliance with a vcenter. Default ports used to communicate with the Agent computer Custom ports used to communicate with the Agent computer 7
Field User name Password Save password Domain Description User name for accessing the Agent service: Can contain alphanumeric characters, as well as!#$%-'(). Maximum length is 20 characters Password for accessing the Agent service: Case-sensitive Can contain alphanumeric characters, as well as!"#$%&'()*+,-./~`[]?\^<>= Maximum length is 31 characters Enable this option to save the password for the Agent service. Name of the Microsoft Windows domain on which the Agent computer is installed: Can contain alphanumeric characters and hyphens Should begin with a letter Maximum length is 15 characters If you are not using a domain name, you can leave this as an empty field. 3. Check that the appliance has registered properly by clicking Get Status. 8
If the DNS or IP information is incorrect, the message Failed to connect to <...> appears. If the authorization information is incorrect, the message Failed to authorize user () or user () possesses insufficient privilege appears. Contact your service provider. 4. Click OK to return to the Agent Properties screen. Note: For details about configuring an Agent through CentralControl, refer to the CentralControl Operations Guide or CentralControl online help. 4.1 Entering vcenter Credentials with Windows CentralControl After registering the Agent for VMware with Windows CentralControl, you must enter vcenter Credentials. You can also enter Changed Block Tracking (CBT) settings. To enter vcenter credentials and CBT settings: 1. In Windows CentralControl, right-click the Agent for VMware, select Agent Configuration, and then click the vcenter tab. 9
2. In the vcenter Credentials pane, provide vcenter account credentials with sufficient privileges to back up and restore your VMs. 3. In the Change Block Tracking pane, select or clear the Enable Change Block Tracking (CBT) for Virtual Machines During Backup option. Backups always use CBT for VMs that have it enabled. If you clear the Enable Change Block Tracking (CBT) for Virtual Machines during backup option, this does not disable CBT for systems that already have it enabled. It will only stop the application from enabling CBT for future VMs. In other words, clearing this option does not stop the Agent from using CBT for backups if the VM has it turned on. 4. Click OK. 10
5 Registering the Agent with Web CentralControl To control the VRA through Web CentralControl you will first need to register the VRA to Web CentralControl via the command line and then configure the VRA from within Web CentralControl. To register the VRA to Web CentralControl, use the webcc register command with the syntax: webcc register <WebCCAddress> <port> <login> <password> The webcc register command can also step you through the registration process if you prefer. Type in the webcc register command and hit enter. You will then be asked to answer the following questions. What is the Web-based Agent Console address? What is the Web-based Agent Console connection port? [8086] What is your Web-based Agent Console username? What is your Web-based Agent Console password? Note: When you are asked for the connection port, you may hit enter to accept the default port of When the registration is complete, Agent restarted successfully. will be displayed. You then need to enter the correct vcenter credentials in Web CentralControl. 11
5.1 Entering vcenter Credentials with Web CentralControl To do this, open Web CentralControl and select the unconfigured VMware Agent. Hover over the Edit button (upper right) and select Agent Settings from the dropdown menu. Retrieve the IP address of the appliance. This is the address that appeared after vcenter registration. Enter the vcenter credentials here. 12
You must check that you have the correct vcenter credentials by clicking Test. If you make changes to your vcenter credentials you must also make those changes within the Agent Settings > vcenter Tab. Click Test to verify that any changed credentials are correct. Changed Block Tracking (CBT) is selected by default. Backups always use CBT for VMs that have it enabled. If you clear the Enable Change Block Tracking (CBT) for Virtual Machines during backup checkbox, this does not disable CBT for systems that already have it enabled. It will only stop the application from enabling CBT for future VMs. In other words, clearing this checkbox does not stop the Agent from using CBT for backups if the VM has it turned on. Note: For details about configuring an Agent through Windows or Web CentralControl, refer to the CentralControl Operations Guide or the Web CentralControl Help. 13
6 Creating a Backup Job After the Agent for VMware is installed and configured, you can create a backup Job. For more information about Agent for VMware backup and recovery, refer to the CentralControl Operations Guide or the Web CentralControl Help. Note: The steps outlined here for Windows CentralControl are fundamentally the same as when using Web CentralControl. See the Web CentralControl Help for details. To create a backup Job: 1. In CentralControl, select an Agent for VMware, and choose File > New Job. The New Job Wizard will open. 2. (If applicable) On the Welcome screen, click Next. 3. On the Backup Source Type screen, select VMware vsphere, and then click Next. VMware vsphere is the only available selection because the Agent for VMware only supports backup and recovery of virtual machines. 4. On the Vault screen, select a destination Vault or click New to set up a new Vault. Click Next. Note: To add a New Vault, please refer to the Windows CentralControl Operations Guide or Windows CentralControl online help. 5. On the New Job Name screen, enter a name for the Job and (optionally) a description. Click Next. The Job name must be 1-30 characters in length. 6. On the Source screen, click Add. The Include/Exclude screen will open. 7. Open the Virtual Machines directory. All VMs that are available to the Agent will display. 8. Select a VM from the list, and click Include. The name of the VM that you select will appear in the Virtual Machine pane of the Source screen. You can include more than one VM in the Job. Best Practice: When deciding which VMs to back up, consider that the resulting pool system in primary storage should not exceed 2 TB of data over time. 14
If you use Virtual Machines (i.e., the directory name) as your Include selection, a confirmation screen appears: This screen allows you to provide wildcards for the names of VMs to include: * (asterisk) - signifies a wildcard string up to the next separator character? (question mark) - signifies a single wildcard character Separate your wildcard selections with commas. The wildcards resolve at backup time to determine exactly which VMs to include. Note: The following characters cannot be used and are not supported for VM names: # { } " / 9. Click OK. The names of the VMs that you have chosen will appear in the Virtual Machine pane of the Source screen. 10. Click Next. 11. (Optional) On the Options screen, click Next. 12. (Optional) On the Encryption screen, choose an encryption type for the backup data and supply a password. The password is case-sensitive. If you change the password or any other encryption options, the next backup will reseed. Important: You must remember the password in order to recover your data. The password cannot be recovered. 13. Click Next. 14. On the Log screen, specify log settings. If you choose Create log file, select the Log detail level that you want. You can also specify the number of logs to keep. 15. Click Next. 15
16. On the Finished screen, you can exit from the wizard, schedule the Job, or run the Job immediately. Click Finish. Note: The user should avoid running concurrent backups of the same VM or Job from the same VRA or another VRA. This can cause negative results in CBT and delta backups to be out of sync. 16
