Analyze Usage The road to reducing IT energy usage starts with establishing a baseline of your current IT device energy usage. Verdiem Surveyor automatically detects devices on your network and captures the most accurate energy usage data. With this data, you ll identify opportunities to save energy across your organization. Create a baseline for energy savings Automatically detect and organize devices The first step is to establish energy consumption measurements across your fleet of PCs and Macs prior to enforcing any power saving policies. We ll work closely with you to verify these initial energy measurements. Next, we ll help you devise appropriate policies to start lowering your energy costs. With our highly accurate measurement and verification approach, you ll have a high degree of confidence in your energy savings results to share with your executive team and employees. In fact, we re the only solution that has been independently validated and verified. As new IT devices are added to your network, our flexible rules engine allows automatic grouping based on Active Directory attributes, IP/subnet, operating system, and more. 2 Create policies based on actual user activity and schedules Verdiem Surveyor captures the most accurate device activity information through detection of mouse clicks and keyboard strokes. With this detailed information on user activity, you can create profiles of different types of workers in your organization. Based on their profile, you can establish an appropriate energy management policy that balances their work patterns with energy savings. Align unlimited policies with workforce activity patterns, schedules, and locations Patterns of work and work hours vary in most organizations, especially by department and location. Surveyor gives you the flexibility to create policies that accommodate specific needs rather than a one-size-fits all approach. For example, a customer support team may need longer time intervals before moving their monitors and PCs to a lower power state so they can stay responsive to customers; whereas, a finance group may be in more meetings and therefore a shorter time period is appropriate. Predict accurate savings using device-specific energy consumption We include a pre-populated database of device specific watt draw information. We also give you the flexibility to add your own measurement results. This information flows directly into savings calculations and reports. Enforce Policies With the baseline usage data and knowledge of different workgroup requirements, you can establish power management policies to centrally manage your fleet of distributed IT devices. Verdiem Surveyor supports distributed administration, including role-based security, for even the most complex enterprise topology. Surveyor also integrates with existing client management solutions including Microsoft System Center to help ensure successful patch management and software updates. Centrally manage power policies and handle exceptions Manage in one location your PCs, Macs as well as Cisco EnergyWise devices including IP Phones, wireless access points, switches, routers, smart PDUs and more. You can ensure these important IT devices are in their lowest power state to optimize savings. We enable you to create intelligent profiles based on actual device usage. You can create any number of policies to satisfy complex enterprise requirements. You can also easily establish exception groups for those critical devices that cannot be powered down or turned off. Turn on systems using network-friendly, zero administration Wake-On-WAN Whether it s regularly scheduled patch management or an emergency such as a virus outbreak, Surveyor puts you in control of your critical IT devices across your distributed IT environment. Verdiem has taken the Wake-on-LAN capability one step further with our patented Wake-On-WAN capability. It works in any network topology and across any number of subnets. Our approach is network friendly and requires minimal administration. Integration with client lifecycle management solutions The Verdiem Power Management Pack seamlessly integrates the Surveyor server with leading client management solutions including Microsoft System Center. From within the client management console, you can schedule Surveyor to wake up your PCs and Macs before advertisements or software updates. Surveyor then utilizes its Wake-on-WAN capability to wake up the computers and then to turn them off following patch management or software updates. Overcome Windows sleep disorders Do you have PCs that can t fall asleep (insomnia) or won t wake up (narcolepsy)? Most organizations find that a significant percentage of their PCs do not properly transition power states. Surveyor fixes those problems. In the case of insomnia, Surveyor supplements the Windows idle timer to monitor CPU, disk, and network utilization to proxy for device usage activity. With Surveyor s Wake-on-WAN, you can consistently wake up those sleepy PCs. Allow end user remote access With our Wake for Remote Access functionality, you can empower your end users to access their work computer remotely from any Internet-connected computer. 4 Prevent data loss with application handling and custom scripting As power policies are enforced, it s critical that end user work is not lost. Surveyor gracefully shuts down applications, while protecting unsaved documents. Surveyor also provides rules for standard applications such as Word and gives you the flexibility to create your own custom rules. Surveyor also supports automated exception handling. Establish role-based access control and distributed administration For many organizations, especially larger distributed organizations, the ability to assign different members of the IT team to specific roles for security and administrative reasons is essential. Surveyor supports the creation of different administrative roles with specific permission sets. Roles can be global allowing you to manage particular functionality across your deployment. You can also create a role with group level only permissions. Optimize Savings Surveyor dashboard reports showcase your energy saving results in a clear, easy to understand format, perfect for sharing with the executive team or across the organization. Our built-in business intelligence capabilities let you further analyze results to identify additional energy savings opportunities. For example, better performing device group policies can be quickly cloned to increase results for other device groups. Plus, you can locate, troubleshoot, and fix problematic devices, including PCs that won t go to sleep or won t wake up. You can also identify underutilized devices that are candidates to be virtualized or even eliminated, further enhancing your savings. Quickly identify and replicate the most energy efficient policies After you discover your baseline energy usage and then enforce energy saving policies, you ll be able to determine which policies are most effective. To simplify administration and share best practices, you can quickly and easily apply any policy from one group to another. Identify and eliminate underutilized devices With our highly accurate device usage data and enterprise-class business intelligence engine, you can create reports that flag devices with low utilization. You can apply your own criteria such as devices with less than 15% daily activity. You can also slice the data by department, location, or any other measure. 5 Locate, diagnose, and remedy (or isolate) problematic devices Surveyor detects misconfigured devices and can automatically correct issues with enforcing power management policies. In addition, Surveyor can also help with general network connection issues. When computers aren t connecting properly with the Surveyor server, IT can flag those devices and start troubleshooting to figure out the desktop or networking issue.
