3 Welcome Thank you for purchasing our device This quick start guide will help you become familiar with our device in a very short time. Before installation and operation, please read the following safeguard and warning carefully! Important Safeguard and Warning 1.Electrical safety All installation and operation here should conform to your local electrical safety codes. We assume no liability or responsibility for all the fires or electrical shock caused by improper handling or installation. 2.Transportation security Heavy stress, violent vibration or water splash are not allowed during transportation, storage and installation. 3.Installation Keep upwards. Handle with care. Please check the device max total power consumptions and make sure the supplying power rate is higher than the device normal operation parameter. Otherwise, it may result in device malfunction, data loss. Do not apply power to the device before completing installation. Do not place objects on the device. 4.Qualified engineers needed All the examination and repair work should be done by the qualified service engineers. We are not liable for any problems caused by unauthorized modifications or attempted repair. 5.Environment The device should be installed in a cool, dry indoor place away from direct sunlight, inflammable, explosive substances and etc. 6. Accessories Be sure to use all the accessories recommended by manufacturer. Before installation, please open the package and check all the components are included: Contact your local retailer ASAP if something is missing in your package. 7. Disk Replacement When replace the disk, please make sure you are using the same model from the same manufacturer and of the same capacity! ii

4 1 ESS3116X Installation Note: All the installation and operations here should conform to your local electric safety rules. 1.1 Preparation Work Before the installation, please read the important safeguard and warning carefully. a) Hardware inspection. Please make sure all the hardware devices are available according to the operation process of the manufacturer. All the peripheral devices are in good condition. b) Before connect the device to the power supplying, make sure all device amount, specifications, installation positions conforms to the installation environments manufacturer instructed. All kinds of the on-off button of the device shall be OFF. Bracket and all kinds of the cables connection are OK. The internal cable layout shall not be earthed. 1.2 Cable Layout ESS3116X series product has two kinds of rear panels. There are slightly difference on the power supplying module and fan module. The single-power supplying interface is shown as In Figure 1-1. Figure 1-1 The redundancy-power supplying rear panel is shown as below. See Figure 1-2. 5 SN Port Function 1 Power Port Connect to 220V AC. 2 Blowing machine It is for ventilation. 3 Fan It is for ventilation. 4 Ethernet port It is used to transmit data. 1000M Ethernet port. 5 VGA port Connect to monitor. 6 COM Connect to RS232 COM to go to the command interface. 7 SAS port Connect to disk array enclosure. 1.3 Boot up Please boot up he disk array enclosure first if the ESS3116X is connected to the ESS3116S-J. a) Connect the power cable to the system. b) Press the device power button to boot up the system. You can see HDD power indicator light becomes yellow. Now the boot up completed. 2

6 2 ESS3116X Quick Start Guide Before you read this chapter, please read the user s manual carefully and please operate according to it. 2.1 Network Setup Internet intelligent storage product default network setup is shown as below: IP: Gateway: Subnet mask: WEB account name: admin WEB password: Background Information Please note the device default IP address is It may be different from your current network environments. You can use your work platform such as PC to access the WEB interface of the device and change its IP address so that it can work in current situation and is easy for the future operation and maintenance work Set Controller IP Address a) Please install the HDD and then boot up the device. b) Connect network cable. Insert one end of the network cable to one of the Ethernet port of the ESS3116X. Insert the other end of the network cable to the work platform port or the switch. c) Change work platform IP address. The following contents are based on the Windows XP OS. Right click My Network Places, select property. And then right click local connection and then click property, double click internet protocol (TCP/IP).In Internet protocol interface (see Figure 2-1), you can modify IP setup and then click O.K button. Please note controller IP and device IP shall be in the same network section. d) Network Connection Test. Figure 2-1 3

7 In DOS environment, input the command: ping If the return value is less than 255, you can go to the next step. Otherwise, please check your previous operation to make sure the network connection is OK. e) Set IP Address Please follow the steps below to set device IP address. Open IE browser, input IP address) you can see the login interface. System user name is admin and password is Admin is the system administrator account and has the highest priority. For security reasons, please modify your password after first login (At least 12-digit). In the main interface, from network to network and then click edit button. The edit interface is shown as in Figure 2-2.Here you can input your new IP address information. Please input your IP address and gateway and then click save button. Figure 2-2 f) Check new IP setup Please use command Ping to test network connection. Open browser and then input new IP address such as You can see the new IP is valid if you can login. 2.2 Quick Guide If it is your first time to use this device, you can follow the steps listed below. Before the quick guide operation, please make sure: There are 16 idle disks on the ESS3116X device. System is going to create 3 RAID5 groups: md1 consists of 5 disks, md2 consists of 5 disks and md3 consists of 6 disks. 2.3 Quickly Create Share directory This chapter is to help you quickly create SAMBA, NFS, FTP and iscsi share on the newly installed internet intelligent storage series product and provide share service. Here is a flow chart for NAS share creation. Administrator logs in Create a user 4

8 Create RAID device Create storage pool Share configuration Enable share service Figure 2-3 Note If there is RAID device and storage pool on the device, you can go to the share setup interface directly to create SAMAB, NFS, and FTP directory share. 2.4 Access Share Directory After you create share on the storage device, you can access the data on the internet intelligent storage device. The SAMAB,NFS,FTP,iSCSI share mode are different. Please refer to the user s manual for detailed information Access SAMBA Share Directory You can refer to the steps listed below to access SAMBA share directory. Input ESS3116X IP address on the browser such as \\ Input user name or password on the long-in interface The user name and password here is the valid account you select when you are creating SAMAB share Access NFS Share Directory On Linux OS, use command to mount the NFS share directory to one of the directory and access the directory. Please refer to the user s manual for detailed operation Access FTP Share Directory There are two ways for you to access FTP share directory. Usually we recommend FTP software to access FTP share directory. Use FTP software to access Please install FTP software (such as LeapFTP, flashfxp) on your PC to realize FTP share. Use IE browser to access. Open your browser and then input ESS3116 series product IP address such as ftp:// Input valid user name, password on the login interface. System default FTP user name is ftpuser and password is Access iscsi Share Directory Please refer to the user s manual for detailed operation. 5

9 3 ESS3116S-J Installation 3.1 Cable Connection Disk array enclosure connects to HBA via minisas cable. HBA connects to ESS3116X internet intelligent storage device via PCI or PCI-X slot. One ESS3116X device can connect to one HBA and one HBA can connect to two ESS3116S-J devices. One ESS3116S-J can install 16 SATA disks. So ESS3116S-J device can effectively extend ESS3116X internet intelligent storage device capacity. ESS3116S-J rear panel has two types: single power and redundancy power. These two types have slight difference on the power module and fan module. Please check carefully. The single power mode rear panel is shown as below. See Figure 3-1. After connect the device to the AC power. Click button On to boot up system and click OFF button to shut down system. For ESS3116S-J ventilation For ESS3116S-J ventilation. The Link light is on when OUT port has connected a sublevel device. The Access light is on when there is data accessing on the OUT port. Connect OUT port to the sub-level disk array enclosure to realize cascade connection. The RUN light is on when device has booted up and work properly. M/S is main control indicator light. The light is on when system is working properly. The light is off when the system is abnormal. The ERR light is on when system is malfunction. The ERR light is off when system is working properly. The SPD light is on when the HDD access speed is abnormal. The SPD light is off when HDD access speed is normal. Access ESS3116S-J system via COM. It is mainly for device debug. Connect IN port to the host such as ESS3116X or the OUT port of the upper-level disk array enclosure. Access the HDD of the disk array enclosure via the IN port. The Link light is on when the IN port has connected to the host or the upper-level disk array enclosure. The Access light is on when the host is accessing the HDD of the disk array enclosure. 3.2 Boot up ESS3116S-J Here we introduce the ESS3116S-J and host (ESS3116X) connection. Please make sure you have booted up disk array enclosure before you boot up the host. a) Refer to Figure 3-1 to connect the power cable to the power port. b) The power button of the rear panel is ON. c) Press the power button on the front panel of the ESS3116S-J. The light is blue after system boots up properly. d) Please wait until the device boots up. The RUN light of the rear panel flashes when system boots up successfully. e) Boot up ESS3116X after you have connected SAS cable. ESS3116S-J is a disk array enclosure and it is to extend the disk capacity extension of the internet intelligent storage product such as ESS3116X. Connect ESS3116-J to ESS3116X. For ESS3116X, it adds the free space on the disk and for ESS3116-J, its all WEB operation and share are all on the ESS3116X. 7
