Unit 11 Computer Network Introduction to Network Operating Systems
Network Operating Systems Just as a computer cannot operate without a computer operating system, a network of computers cannot operate without a network operating system. Without a network operating system of some kind, individual computers cannot share resources, and other users cannot make use of those resources.
Network Operating Systems Network Operating System runs on a server and provides server the capability to manage data, users, groups, security, applications, and other networking functions. The primary purpose of the network operating system is to allow shared file and printer access among multiple computers in a network, typically a local area network (LAN), a private network or to other networks. Examples of network operating systems are Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, UNIX, Linux, Mac OS X, Novell NetWare, and BSD.
Learning Aims/Outcomes Identify essential NOS components. Define pre-emptive and non pre-emptive multitasking. Describe the elements of client software. Describe the elements of server software. Define network services.
Network OS Depending on a network operating system's manufacturer, a desktop computer's networking software can be either added to the compute Novell's NetWare is the most familiar and popular example of an NOS in which the client computer's networking software is added on to its existing computer operating system. The desktop computer needs both operating systems in order to handle stand-alone and networking functions. Network operating system software is integrated into a number of popular operating systems including Windows 2000, Server/Windows NT Workstation, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Apple OS.
Task Research 4 different Network operating systems. Examples are 1. Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2. Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 1. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, 3. Mac OS X, 4. Novell NetWare, 5. UBuntU Write a paragraph on each example and explain which one would be linked to your home computer give reasons for your decisions.
Network Operating Systems Advantages & Disadvantages ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Network Operating Systems Advantages & Disadvantages ADVANTAGES Centralized servers are highly stable. Security is server managed. Upgrades to new technologies and hardware can be easily integrated into the system. DISADVANTAGES High cost of buying and running a server. Dependency on a central location for most operations. Regular maintenance and updates are required. Remote access to servers is possible from different locations and types of systems.
Network Client Software Each client has to have: A set of software to manage the adapter hardware to manage the protocols e.g. TCP/IP to control the user access to the network (login) to manage local sharing of data
Network Applications Internet browser Displays pages created in web formats (CSS/HTML) Several available with different features Task: How many browsers are there? Firewall To protect the network from unwanted traffic client For creating, sending, receiving and displaying
NOS Utilities Standard utilities required Disk checkers and defragmenters Backup utilities (very important for file servers) Disk compression and data compression utilities Archive utilities Anti-virus utilities Task Research one of these utilities and present findings to group
Network Utilities Network utilities Traffic analysers Connection analysers Configuration utilities Event loggers Internet security utilities Threat scanners Dangerous website detectors
Utilities Task What is the utility? Research and suggest four useful Utility examples:
