Purpose - Why the Client Needs the Network: The client needs the network for their office in a nearby town for their small company Mesh Networking Solutions. These people are all using stand-alone computer systems, of which is connected to a laser printer. Purpose - What They Want It To Be Able To Do: They want to be able to access and use the network, to be able to add more users, changing access rights, setting login restrictions, each have their own folder with full access rights, be able to access each other s folders with different access rights for at least six people, at least seven files on the network, all computers connected to the network and a laser printer, allow users to take control of other computers in the network by a remote desktop. Client Requirements: Must be able to access and use the office computer network. The computer network must be configured to allow adding more users, changing access rights, and setting login restrictions. All users must have their own individual folder on the computer network with full access rights. Everyone should be able to access each other s folders with different access rights. This should be configured for at least six people. Everyone will be working with a minimum of seven files on the network. All computers in the network must be able to connect to the laser printer. The computer network should make use of remote desktop to allow users to take control of other computers in the network. List of the hardware used: Network media copper straight-through wire End device PC-PT workstation Intermediary device 2960 switch Intermediary device genetic server-pt End device printer-pt Hardware Purpose and Connection: The hardware I used in the network design is network media 11 copper straight-through, end devices 8 pc-pt workstations, intermediary devices 2960 switch, genetic server-pt and an end device printer-pt.
Cables to connect together different devices to make up a network. Switch like a hub that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN. The typical use of a switch is at the centre of a star topology network. The switch has cables plugged into it from each computer. Printer attached to one computer and shared to allow other computers to access it. Server to accept requests from each client and giving responses as a result. All of the workstations connect to the switch and the switch connects to the server and printer. List of Software: Network operating system Account management File/folder Permissions User accounts Utility programs Virus protection Backup Remote desktop Firewall Office applications Permissions Software Purpose: Network operating system Account management: Like with Google chrome where you have an account that comes the Google chrome browser. So an account is setup with the network system. Once the account is created, the account would appear in the top bar browser. File/folder: An example like Google drive where you install files and folders online as a backup. So in your account to have access to creating folders and installing files. Permissions: The user has an option to adjust their settings to certain files and folders on who are allowed to access to, setting to just private or just viewable to the public. And to those who have access to the folders and files, users can also have a setting either they can just read, edit or both. User accounts: In the account as well as offer files and folders with the permission settings, also offer office application such as word, excel, power point, publisher, visio, share point, one note, etc. And also remote desktop. Utility programs Virus protection: With the operating system updates to the network and the security settings such as phishing and malware protection and content settings such as cookies, images, java script, plugins, pop-ups and location sharing. Backup: Installing files and folders online in your account as a backup of all office software programs. Remote desktop: In the account you can have access to another computer in the network, typing in a dialog into the system to go onto a different computer that is in a different location.
Firewall: A network security device in the advanced settings of security settings. What type of data a user wishes to block out into the computer system. Office applications : Permissions when you go in each of the office programs on certain documents to adjust the permission settings on who can access and whenever they can just edit, read or both. For the folders in the drive s permission settings on a network page to adjust the similar settings to in the documents in each of the software programs settings. My Network Diagram Design: Test Plan: Test: Method: Expected Outcome: Check Connectivity Of Workstation Check it by using the PING test. Can used office programs, antisoftware program, applications, internet, etc. User Login And Password Administer to see that the user User name and login are there Access To Personal Folder Access To Shared Folder Check Connectivity To Printer Check Remote Desktop Test Data: name and login are there. Tested by the user logging on and clicking onto the personal folder. The user logging on and clicking onto the personal folder. Check it by printing a document. Tested through a user name and password to get to the remote desktop. as expected. The user will be able to access to their personal folder without any issues. The user will be able to access to their shared folder without any issues. Printed paper. Managed to get to the remote desktop without any issues. To test connectivity of workstation by pinging IP addresses, to test connectivity of a printer by sending documents to other users, to test the connectivity of a shared folder for different users
being able to use the shared folder simultaneously and test the connectivity of a remote desktop by accessing to a computer from a different computer from a different location. Alternative Design: Alternative Bus Design: Outline of Configuration: The IP addresses used to connect network devices are using a unique set of numbers to identify each hardware device connected to a network. The IP addresses used to connect network devices are for the PCs, switch and server in the main design. The IP addresses for the PCs, switch, server and
wireless device in my alternative design. The IP addresses for the PCs, the switches, server and wireless device in the alternative bus design. The IP addresses for the PCs are dynamic as the computers are used to log on to the network and IP address for the rest of the hardware listed above are static as they are permanently assigned and not changed, assigned for users to have access to the network. The function of an IP address: IP addresses are used by routers on the network to forward messages from one computer to another. The router acts like a telephone switch that connects a caller to the dialled phone number. The messages are broken down into packets, where the packets take its own route. The routers read this and destination IP addresses by scanning a packet header and forward the packet as a result. It is used to connect devices to a network by IP addresses used by routers that connect the devices onto the network. Subnets to divide a network into sections, the sections that are in PCs, switch, server, printer for the main design. The sections are in PCs, switch, server, printer, wireless device and the cloud for the alternative design. The sections are 3X PCs with switches, main switch, server, printer, wireless device and the cloud in the alternative bus design. Subnet mask is the unique numbers that I said in the designs are used for routing traffic. Once a packet of these unique numbers has arrived at an organization s gateway or connection point, it can be routed to its destination with the organization s internal gateways using the subnet s unique numbers. With the subnet s numbers in placed for the host of the network. Costs: Hardware:- Network media copper straight-through each and 10 cables all together: End device PC-PT workstation Desktop PC each and monitor each. All together for 8 users: Intermediary device 2960 switch Intermediary device genetic server-pt End device printer-pt Software:- Account management User accounts Utility programs Virus protection Backup Remote desktop Firewall 25.49
Justification: The final design decisions that I have made is the eight workstations connected to the switch, which is then connected to the server and printer from my first network design with the alternatives designs if they will ever be required to create the office network. If the office network will ever require a wireless device: Linksys and a WAN emulation: the cloud. Or either requires a bus network instead of a simple network with four times the switches devices and the small groups of workstations connected through the network as an extension for the second design and the first alternative design. The computer network to fulfil the stated purpose of having a small network for a small computer company, as the workstations connected to the server then to the printer meets their purpose to be connected to a laser printer. The access rights including folders, abled to add more users, login restrictions and remote desktop for control of other computers all have been installed in the network I designed. Eight workstations in the design more than the required six people, the multiple ports in the switch from my costing list has been applied to have at least seven files on the network. I choose the first design as my final design decision because it meets the requirements for the office network. Having at least six people, which there are eight workstation tops this requirement to be configured for access to each other s folders, all the computers are connected to the switch to be connected to a printer which meets this requirement for users to connect to a laser printer. The access rights, login registrations and the remote desktop all set up within the network. But if there s more requirements needed later on in creating the office network I will turn to the alternatives. It s the least expensive than the two alternatives as it has fewer components in the network and the most efficient as it is simpler and less complicated than the alternative designs. The constraints on the design is the budget needed from my costing list for my final design which in total is 5,042.73, the time required is three or four weeks and the equipment of connection cable, workstations, switch, server, laser printer, account management, user accounts, virus protection, backup, remote desktop and firewall. The impact of these constraints on the design is identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the network even though all the requirements are there but it does have its weaknesses. The weakness identified as not having a wide area network and a cloud WAN connection. The wide network would give the user extra space for more folders files, web access and more software programs installed. With the cloud opportunity as backup for the computer rather use a portable device as backup for each computer. The quality of the design would be a small scale compared to most networks out there but the network is simpler enough for the requirements from the company s office users to be met.
