5 INSTALLATION GUIDE Introduction System Requirements This guide describe RTX 8.0 system requirements and installation instructions. This section lists hardware and software requirements for the RTX 8.0 release. Important RTX does not support Vista on a PIC systems. HAL Type To use RTX 8.0, your system must support one of the following HAL types: As displayed in Windows Device Manager Standard PC Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC MPS Multiprocessor PC ACPI Uniprocessor PC ACPI Multiprocessor PC ACPI x86-based PC As displayed in registry resource map PC Compatible EISA/ISA HAL ACPI Compatible EISA/ISA HAL MPS APIC Platform HAL ACPI APIC Platform UP ACPI APIC Platform MP ACPI x86 Platform Note Some hardware configurations are not supported by RTX installations and, when RTX can detect these unsupported configurations, they are now indicated with a popup error message. 6 6 RTX 8.0 Installation Guide Supported Network Adapters The RTX 8.0 release provides support for a number of network adapters. For the most up-to-date list, go to products.aspx?id=1517. Note Wizards and network driver source files are provided to allow for customization of existing drivers or the writing of new network drivers. Operating System Requirements To use RTX, you must have a system with one of the following operating system configurations: Windows Vista Windows 2000 Professional edition with Service Pack 4, Windows 2000 Server edition with Service Pack 4, Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, or Windows 2003 Server with Service Pack 1 or R2 Note As of 8.0, Windows 2003 SP2 works for MP dedicated environments. Note RTX 8.0 has been tested with Windows Vista Ultimate, although all Windows Vista editions will be supported. Browser Requirements RTX requires Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher. Visual Studio Requirements (SDK Only) The RTX SDK requires Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 5 or Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2002, NET 2003, or 2005 installed if you wish to debug RTX programs with the Visual Studio IDE.

7 7 Administrator Privileges Administrator privileges are required for installing, uninstalling, and using the RTX product. If you are installing on a Vista system, it is important to note that, when User Account Control is active, Vista will not run applications with your full permissions unless you choose to run them as an administrator. Alternatively, you can avoid this problem by disabling User Account Control. Installation This release is provided as a downloadable file from our Web site. The installation program walks you through the installation process. Before You Begin Before beginning the installation, do the following: Make sure the system requirements described above have been met. Make sure you fulfill the administrator requirements: For Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 systems, you must have administrator privileges on your system. RTX cannot install unless you are logged on with administrator privileges. For Vista systems, you must run the setup executable as an administrator. You can do so by right-clicking the executable and selecting "Run as administrator" or by turning off User Account Control. Uninstall previous versions of RTX. If you are logged on to a domain that uses Active Directory, then you may need to log out of the domain, and then log back in to the system using a local administrator account in order to uninstall RTX. Make sure that you have an RTX 8.0 PAC number for license key entry; it is available from Ardence Sales. For information regarding PAC numbers, see "Licensing" on page 12. Ardence strongly recommends that you de-select the Windows Automatically reboot option for Startup and Recovery from the Advanced tab of the System Properties page of the Windows Control Panel. This will allow you to view blue screen information. Exit all Windows programs.

8 8 RTX 8.0 Installation Guide Vista Only. RTX does not support Vista hibernation or hybrid sleep. Before installing RTX on a Vista machine, you must disable hibernation and hybrid sleep. Vista Only. On MP systems with Windows Vista, the RTX installation modifies the current Boot configuration data store by: Always disabling Data Section Write Protection. Always enabling PAE. Explicitly specifying the number of processors available to Windows in order to dedicate one to RTX. Note When you upgrade your operating system (for example, from Windows 2000 to Windows XP), you must uninstall and then reinstall RTX after the OS upgrade. Installing RTX To install RTX 8.0: 1. Download the self-extracting executable, RTX8.0Setup.exe, from the Ardence web site: products.aspx?id= Do one of the following: On Vista machines, right-click RTX8.0Setup.exe and select Run as administrator to run the installation program. On other Windows machines, double-click the RTX8.0Setup.exe. You will be prompted for an RTX Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) number and your address in order to register the product. The installation program will ask whether internet access is available. If internet access is available, then the installer will open up Internet Explorer to a page on the Ardence Web site. Note The browser window may be hidden by the installer program windows, so you may have to switch to the browser using ALT-TAB. 3. Complete the required information to register the product and obtain a license key.

9 9 A valid license key is required to complete the RTX installation (refer to "Licensing" on page 12 for additional information). If no internet access is available, then the installer program will provide alternate instructions on how to obtain a license key. Note If you do not have a PAC Number, then contact Product Management at ardenceproductlicensing@ardence.com. 4. On Vista machines, if necessary, click Continue in the User Account Control dialog box. 5. Click Next in the InstallShield Wizard. 6. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next. 7. Enter your user name, organization, address and PAC number, then click Next. 8. Optionally, change to a destination other than the default C:\Program Files\Ardence\RTX. 9. Click Next in the Destination Folder screen. 10. Click Next in the Custom Setup screen. 11. Click Install. 12. Click Finish. 13. When you are prompted to, click Yes to reboot your computer. Note The RTX Properties control panel will not work until you reboot your system. If you opt not to reboot your system at the end of the installation, you will have to reboot before you attempt to use the control panel.

10 10 RTX 8.0 Installation Guide Installing RTX on Multiprocessor Systems with Only One Processor Important systems. The information in the following section does not apply to Vista RTX requires at least two processors on multiprocessor (MP) systems in order to install and operate. If an MP system has only one processor, then Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 2003 Server must first be converted to use a standard uniprocessor HAL and uniprocessor (UP) kernel before RTX can be used (for example, "Standard PC"). To install RTX on multiprocessor systems with only one processor: 1. Update the "Emergency Recovery" disk for the system (in case an incompatible HAL choice leaves the system unbootable). 2. Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Computer. 3. Expand the Computer node to show its leaf. 4. Click the leaf listed beneath to display a HAL type. If the HAL type is already "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" or "Standard PC", there is no need to convert, go to step Right-click the HAL type and select Properties on the popup menu. 6. Click the Driver tab. 7. Click Update Driver to start the Device Driver Wizard. 8. Choose "Display a list of known drivers..." and click Next. 9. Choose "Show all hardware of this device class". 10. Select the appropriate new HAL type: If the HAL is "ACPI Multiprocessor PC," choose "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" or "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC." If the HAL is "MPS Multiprocessor PC" or "MPS Uniprocessor PC," choose "Standard PC." 11. Choose YES at the next popup message. This is an expected warning message. 12. Reboot the system.

11 Install RTX. Verifying the Installation Once RTX has been installed and the system has been rebooted, run the System Response Time Measurement (SRTM) utility to verify that RTX is correctly installed. To run SRTM: 1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the RTX \bin directory. Note If you accepted the installation defaults, this location is C:\Program Files\Ardence\RTX\bin. Uninstalling RTX 2. Run SRTM by double-clicking the srtm.rtss executable. You should hear a steady 1 KHz tone for 15 seconds along with a histogram of the system s response time measurements. If you need to uninstall any of the RTX 8.0 components, perform the appropriate procedure, as described below, for your version of Windows. To uninstall RTX on Windows Vista machines: 1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. 2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program. 3. Select the RTX program and click Uninstall. 4. Click Yes to confirm. 5. If necessary, click Allow. 6. You are warned if any RTX applications need to be stopped prior to uninstalling. Leave Automatically close applications and attempt to restart them after setup is complete selected and click OK. 7. Click Yes to restart your machine. To uninstall RTX from other Windows machines: 1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

12 12 RTX 8.0 Installation Guide 3. Select the RTX program and click Remove. 4. Click Yes to confirm, then Yes again to restart the machine. Licensing RTX 8.0 installations must be licensed using one of the following methods: permachine licensing or site/oem licensing. When a purchase order is processed, a Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) is assigned to each product license purchase. The PAC(s) is then sent in an that describes how to generate your per-machine license key from the Ardence Web site. During the installation of a per-machine RTX license, you must have a connection to our Web site to generate a license key specific to the product Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) and machine. Site/OEM licensing is to be used by companies that distribute our software bundled with their own, or purchase a site license for their organization. Installation via site/oem licensing does not require an Internet connection to our website. The following section discusses this product licensing methodology. Key Retrieval Installing RTX 8.0 with a per-machine license requires three pieces of information: Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) - Provided by Ardence after an order is processed. The PAC indicates that a product license has been purchased. It serves as a token associated with each product license purchase. Machine Information - Generated at the time of installation by the product installation, based on system information. License Key - Machine specific license key derived from the Purchase Authentication Code and the system specific machine information. The license key is generated for you by Ardence. The RTX per-machine license key can be obtained from Ardence in two ways; Automatic License Key Generation or Manual License Generation. Automatic License Key Generation If the target system is connected to the Internet, then automatic key generation is possible. The product installation extracts machine information and automatically accesses the Ardence Web site to get the License Key.

13 13 You will be prompted for your contact information and the Purchase Authentication Code at the Ardence Web site. The license key will be derived from the Purchase Authentication Code. This per-machine license key is then used to complete the installation of the RTX 8.0 product. You will also receive a copy of the License Key transaction in an containing your contact information, Purchase Authentication Code, the machine information, and the License Key. Manual License Key Generation If the target system is not connected to the Internet, automatic key generation is not possible and key generation must be done manually. The product installation extracts machine information and displays the information that will be required to generate a license key. You must go to the following Ardence web site: When prompted, enter the requested Purchase Authentication Code and machine information. You will receive the License Key in a browser window; you are also sent an listing your contact information, Purchase Authentication Code, machine information and the License Key. The License Key can then be entered manually during the product installation. Product Relocation If you must move the product installation to another system for some reason (for example, replacing development systems, a down machine, etc.). You may relocate your software by generating a replacement License Key. Using the Ardence Web site used for product registration, you can request a "Replacement License" rather than a "New License Key". When requesting a replacement license key you will be required to enter your previous License Key. Viewing the Release Notes after Installation Each component has release notes installed as part of its product and can be accessed by selecting Start Menu, Programs, Ardence, RTX, and then Release Notes.
