5 Cloud Impact on the IT Pro Experience The design of Server Manager in Windows Server 2012 is key to the multi-machine management experience. Support Scalability Design Matters! The design focuses on making relevant information available at a glance, so that you can see whether there are issues and how urgently you must tackle them. Issues raised are actionable you can take corrective action immediately, directly from the console. Remote Is the Default The preferred (and default) configuration for Windows Server 2012 is Server Core, which you manage remotely from your client. This type of remote management is now recognized as the most common way to manage your servers, and it is now the default. There is also a way to remotely manage your server through a web browser, by using Windows PowerShell Web Access. Microsoft Virtual Academy Student Manual 5

6 Consistency Reduces Cost In Windows Server 2012, the graphical administrative tools are layered on top of the command-line automation features. This provides an exceptional level of consistency in the way you manage your environment. Consistency between the GUI and the command line reduces costs by making administration tasks easily repeatable. It is easier to create command-line scripts based on actions you perform in the GUI. Consistency across configurations reduces costs by providing a standard way to manage different types of Windows Server installations, whether you are managing Full Server, Server Core, or Server with a GUI. 7 The IT Pro Experience Server Manager has been designed to be a solution that enables you to manage multiple technologies that span servers. When you manage multiple machines, you may want to manage by aggregation, focusing on groups of machines that have particular roles installed, or are at the same physical location, or any other grouping that is required in your environment. Here you can make use of the summaries and dashboards that Server Manager provides. At other times, you will need to drill down to the individual machine, application, or service level. Server Manager presents the aggregations and drilldowns in a multi-machine environment by technology and by server. Each is important for performing different tasks. 8 The Local Server Experience IT pros manage both servers and clients. By providing the same desktop experience on the server and on the client, Windows provides a consistent experience that makes administration easier. This is optimized by default to provide quick access to common IT pro tools. Running Server Manager on a client machine and performing management tasks remotely is the central experience for managing your servers. From Server Manager, you can launch role-specific administrative tools, either from context, or from the customizable Admin Tools menu. Server Manager is the same, whether it is local or remote. 9 IT Pro Experience Deployment Options Although Server Core is the preferred and default option, there are other deployment options for Windows Server Server Core This has many benefits reduced footprint, lower servicing footprint, and fewer patches. Minimal Server Interface This is a new option. It is similar to Server with a GUI, but without Windows Internet Explorer or the Windows 8 UI. It enables you to run GUI management tools such as Server Manager and Microsoft Management Consoles (MMCs) from the command line. Microsoft Virtual Academy Student Manual 9

10 Full Server Also called Server with a GUI, this option is provided for backwards compatibility. You can switch between Server Core and Full Server by installing or uninstalling the relevant components.
