4 To Back Up Your files Open Backup and Restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore. Do one of the following: If you've never used Windows Backup before, click Set up backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If you've created a backup before, you can wait for your regularly scheduled backup to occur, or you can manually create a new backup by clicking Back up now. 12 Five Types of Backup A normal backup copies all the files you select and marks each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared). With normal backups, you only need the most recent copy of the backup file or tape to restore all of the files. You usually perform a normal backup the first time you create a backup set A differential backup copies files that have been created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It does not mark files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared) Operating Systems 12

13 Five Types of Backup An incremental backup backs up only those files that have been created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It marks files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared) A copy backup copies all the files you select, but does not mark each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared) A daily backup copies all the files that you select that have been modified on the day the daily backup is performed. 14 Five Types of Backup Pros & Cons Backing up your data using a combination of normal backups and incremental backups requires the least amount of storage space and is the quickest backup method. However, recovering files can be timeconsuming and difficult because the backup set might be stored on several disks or tapes Backing up your data using a combination of normal backups and differential backups is more timeconsuming, especially if your data changes frequently, but it is easier to restore the data because the backup set is usually stored on only a few disks or tapes The last one is the most popular method! 15 Volume Shadow Copy Shadow copy backups ensure that: Applications can continue to write data to the volume during a backup Files that are open are no longer omitted during a backup Backups can be performed at any time, without locking out users Operating Systems 15

19 The Registry The registry is a database in Windows that contains important information about system hardware, installed programs and settings, and profiles of each of the user accounts on your computer Windows continually refers to the information in the registry A registry hive is a group of keys, subkeys, and values in the registry that has a set of supporting files that contain backups of its data The most files for all hives are in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder Operating Systems 19

20 Five Root Keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Contains the root of the configuration information for the user who is currently logged on. The user's folders, screen colors, and Control Panel settings are stored here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Contains configuration information particular to the computer (for any user) HKEY_USERS - Contains all the actively loaded user profiles on the computer HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - The information that is stored here makes sure that the correct program opens when you open a file by using Windows Explorer HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - Contains information about the hardware profile that is used by the local computer at system startup Operating Systems 20
