1 Linux VPN Configuration Note. This information is based on Red Hat 9.0, it should be used as a guide only as other distributions may have similar installation methods. VPN Software Installation - PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) 1. First you need to make sure you have the right version of the software installed. Go to Start Menu > Systems Tools > Terminal 2. Within the terminal type rpm -qi ppp 3. If the version is older than cvs you need to download a newer version. If you have a newer version skip to the Kernal-MPPE section below. 4. Download the following _cvs_ i386.rpm 5. Now go to the location where you saved the file and double-click on the file. 6. A new screen will appear asking for the root password, enter it. Page 1

2 7. The system will then be checked, once System Preparation has finished press Continue. This will then install the package. 8. Now we need to check the version of the software installed again by doing Steps 1 to 3. If you now have the updated version installed please go to the Kernel-MPPE section. Page 2

3 Kernel-MPPE (Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption) 1. Go to Start Menu > Control Centre. In the right hand pane of the Control Centre and note down the Version listed it should something similar to Page 3

4 2. Go to 3. Scroll down to the Installation section 1.b. and download the rpm which is listed that matches your kernel version number collected in Step 1. Click on the rpm link to the left of the version numbers to download the file. 4. Now go to the location where you saved the file and double-click on the file. 5. A new screen will appear asking for the root password enter it. The system will then be checked, once System Preparation has finished press Continue. This will then install the package. PPTP-Client (Point-to-Point Transport Protocol) 1. Download the following 2. Now go to the location where you saved the file and double-click on the file. Page 4

PPTP-php-gtk 1. Download the following rc1.i386.rpm 2. Now go to the location where you saved the file and double-click on the file. 3. A new screen will appear asking for the root password enter it. The system will then be checked, once System Preparation has finished press Continue. This will then install the package. 4. Now Reboot the system. Configure VPN Connection 1. Go to Start Menu > Other > PPTP Client. This will open a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for configuring and opening the VPN connection. 2. Enter the root password when prompted to. 3. Enter the following details into the Server tab at the bottom of the window. Name: University of Plymouth VPN Server: roaming.plymouth.ac.uk Username: Set this to your Your local site username e.g. jbloggs@bristol.ac.uk Password: Set this to your Your local site Password Page 5

6 4. Select the Routing tab, now select the All to Tunnel tunnel, now click the Public Network Interface. Set the Public Network Interface to the same as name as your network card, usually eth0 or eth1. This can be seen in Network in the System Settings of the Start Menu. 5. Select the DNS tab, and select the Automatic tick box. Page 6

7 6. Select the Encryption tab, select the Require Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption. 7. Press the Add button. This will save the configuration for future use when you next open up the program. Page 7

8 The VPN service 1. Open the PPTP Client program 2. Enter the root password when asked for. 3. Select University of Plymouth VPN. 4. Press the Start button. This will connect your computer to the roaming VPN server. Page 8

9 5. To Close the connection click the Stop button and close the PPTP Client program. Click here for further details about the above programs Mozilla Firefox Browser Configuration In order to access the Internet you need to configure Firefox to use the University of Plymouth proxy server. Note. The following screen shots where taken in Windows XP, however the configuration settings are the same for Linux and Mac OS. 1. Load the Firefox web browser, from the menu select Tools, then Options. Page 9

10 2. Click the Connection Settings button. 3. By default the browser will be configured to use a Direct connection to the Internet. Select Automatic proxy configuration URL and enter and press the Reload button. 4. Confirm the changes by pressing OK. Your connection is now configured to use the Roaming network, when you want to browse the Internet simply connect to the network, activate your VPN connection and open your web Note. If you are using a browser that is not compatible with configuration scripts you can enter the Proxy settings as shown below, however this is not as reliable as using the script. Proxy settings: Address: wwwcache.plymouth.ac.uk Port: 3128 You will only need to supply the proxy settings for HTTP and FTP Proxies. Page 10
