Hughes, Craig Houghton, Tom Cossburn ResNet Quick Start Installation guide This document will guide you through the process of connecting your PC to the ResNet service in University run accommodation. A guide for Macs is available on request from your nearest Information Services Help Desk. Please read the next page carefully before proceeding.
2 Before you go any further please read this. You must read the Universities Rules and Regulations documentation on the CD provided. Antivirus Software Be aware that it is your responsibility to make sure that your computer is up to date with the latest antivirus definitions for your antivirus software. McAfee antivirus is supplied for your use and can be installed from the CD provided with this pack (PC only). Be aware that if your computer has viruses when you connect to ResNet, your computer may be disconnected automatically so as to stop the spread of the virus. Do not install McAfee if you already have antivirus software installed on your computer, as this may seriously affect your computer s performance. The first step you should take is the installation of antivirus software see the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8 Guide below. Additional Information The accompanying CD contains full ResNet documentation and should be referred to for additional information and support. Additional Support You are responsible for configuring your computer for use on ResNet in the first instance. However, if you continue to have problems configuring your computer to use ResNet then contact your nearest help desk at Stoke campus on or Stafford campus on How do I Get ResNet? Before you can get a ResNet connection in your room, you need to apply online at You can only reach this website from computers in the Information Services Learning Centres. Before you can signup online you need the following details. Name of Hall of Residence Room Number Floor Port Number (printed on the network socket in your room, eg D/00/00) Mac/Ethernet/Physical Address, for example: 00-1A-BC-D2-3E-4F How to find your MAC/Ethernet/Physical Address Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista 1. Click Start 2. Click Run (Vista users do not need to do this) 3. Type cmd in the window that appears (Vista users can type cmd into the start search box) You should now have a window open with a black background and white text. 4. Type ipconfig /all Your MAC will now be displayed in the following format: Physical Address : 00-1A-B2-3C-D4-FE NOTE: You may have more than one physical address, we need the Local Area Network physical address. 2
3 McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8 Guide 1. Insert the ResNet CD and follow the on-screen instructions. Click on Install McAfee Antivirus and select your operating system. 2. McAfee Enterprise 8 Setup will then begin. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Setup, will be displayed. On this screen click the button labeled Next> The license agreement will then be displayed. Make sure that I accept the items in the license agreement is selected and click on the OK button. 3. Look at the screen below. Make sure that Typical is selected and click the button labeled Next> 4. A screen appears titled, Ready to install. Click the button labeled Install 5. Wait for the installation progress bar to complete and then click the button labeled Next> 6. Before you begin the next step, make sure that your network cable is connected securely between your computer and the network socket on your wall. On the screen below, make sure that Update Now and Run On-Demand Scan are both selected then click the button labeled Finish 7. The screen below should appear and begin downloading available updates. Once completed, the screen will close automatically. 8. McAfee VirusScan will then attempt to scan your computer for viruses. If viruses are found, they will be automatically cleaned. 3
4 9. Once the scan has completed, a network driver will be installed. You will be asked to restart the computer. Click the OK button and restart you machine. 10. When Windows has restarted you should see the McAfee VirusScan splash screen appear and the McAfee symbol in the lower right of you screen. McAfee is now installed. NOTE: It is your responsibility to install and update Antivirus software on your computer. If you do not have any Antivirus software installed and kept up-to-date, you may be at risk of being disconnected from ResNet. Once you have completed the setup of your computer for ResNet, please follow the guide at the end of this document on how to update your anti-virus software. ResNet Guide How to configure Internet Explorer 1. Start Internet Explorer 2. Look at the top of the Internet Explorer window. In IE6 there is a menu (File, Edit, View, etc) in the top left of the screen, in IE7 there are icons (Tools, Page etc) 3. Click Tools and then select Internet Options from the list. 4. At the top of the window labelled Internet Options, click the tab labelled Connections. 5. Click the LAN Settings button at the bottom of the window. 6. In the following screen, check the tick box labelled Use automatic configuration script and in the address box type, How to configure Mozilla Firefox 1. Start Mozilla Firefox 2. Look at the top of the Mozilla Firefox window. There is a menu (File, Edit, View, etc). 3. Click Tools and then select Options 4. In the Connection Settings tick Automatic proxy configuration URL and enter 5. Click OK to save the connection changes and click OK again to leave the options Network Card Speed Setting In order for your internet connection to work properly, Network Card Settings need to be set to 10 Half Duplex. Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista 1. For NT, 2000 and XP, click Start > Settings > Network Connections or Network and dial-up connections. For Vista, click Start > Network > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage Network Connections 2. Right-click on Local Area Connection and 3. select Properties 4. Click the button labelled Configure 5. Click the Advanced tab across the top of the window. You should now have a property list on the left and a value selection on the right. 6. Scroll through each Property on the left until you find one that allows you to select 10BaseT Half Duplex or similar as the value. 7. Click OK 8. Click OK 4
5 Mapping Student H:\ 1. Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive 2. Select a drive letter e.g. H: 3. For the Folder entry, put in the network address of your home directory. \\CRWNSTUH1\(student folder)\(your user ID) 4. The Student folder is made up of folders relating to the first letter of your username, STUDENTA = usernames starting A STUDENTB = usernames starting B etc E.g. if your username is zz000001, the network address of your H: drive would be: \\CRWNSTUH1\studentz\zz If the H: drive is mapped correctly it will prompt you for your username and password. You must add student\ before your username. ResNet Troubleshooting guide If you are experiencing problems with your connection, please read the following section. Firstly, make sure that your network cable is securely connected between your computer and the network socket. You should hear a click as you insert the cable. Gently pull the cable to make sure that it does not come out. Try another cable if this does not work. Double check your Internet Explorer settings by following the How to Configure Internet Explorer steps previously in this document. Make sure that Internet Explorer is not connecting via a dial-up connection 1. Start Internet Explorer 2. Look at the top of the Internet Explorer window. There is a menu in IE6 (File, Edit, View, etc) or icons in IE7 (Tools, Page, etc.) 3. Click Tools and then select Internet Options from the list. 4. At the top of the window labelled Internet Options, click the tab labelled Connections. 5. Make sure that Never dial a connection is selected. 6. Click OK Check the TCP/IP settings Follow these steps to set the TCP/IP properties to obtain an IP address automatically and to Use DHCP for WINS Resolution or Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista 1. Click Start 2. Click Settings 3. For NT, 2000 and XP, click Start > Settings > Network Connections or Network and dial-up connections. For Vista, click Start > Network > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage Network Connections 4. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties 5. In the box labelled, This connection uses the following items:, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (in Vista, ensure that TCP/IPv4 is selected and TCP/IPv6 is not) 6. Click the button labelled Properties 7. Check that Obtain an IP address automatically is selected 8. Check that Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected 9. Click the button labelled Advanced 10. In the window labelled, Advanced TCP/IP Settings, remove any numbers that may be in the WINS addresses box by selecting them and clicking the Remove button. 11. Check that Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected 12. Click OK 5
6 13. Click OK Streaming Audio/Video & MSN problems You may need to configure your client software e.g. Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger for media streaming. For Windows Live Messenger, follow the steps under How to Configure Internet Explorer Windows Media Player 1. Start Windows Media Player 2. Select Tools from the menu bar across the top (if this is not present, right click in an empty area of the top of the player, near the Burn, Sync, etc items) 3. Select Options 4. Click the Network tab 5. Click the Configure button 6. Select Use the following proxy server: 7. Type cruscacheres1-int.staffs.ac.uk in the Address box and type 3128 in the Port box Windows Messenger 1. Start Windows Messenger 2. From the menu across the top (File, Actions, Tools, Help) click on Tools 3. Select Options 4. Click on the Connection tab 5. Under Connection Preferences, tick the box labelled I use a proxy server 6. From the list labelled Type, select HTTP Proxy 7. In the box labelled Server, type cruscacheres1- int.staffs.ac.uk 8. In the box labelled Port, type
7 How to use McAfee VirusScan 8 How to check that McAfee is up to date 1. Right-click on the McAfee symbol in the lower right of you screen. 2. Click About VirusScan Enterprise from the list that appears. 3. The following screen will appear. Look at the date shown next to Created On: This shows the date that McAfee VirusScan was last updated. How to update McAfee VirusScan 1. Right-click on the McAfee symbol in the lower left of you screen. 2. Click Update Now from the list that appears. 3. Any available updates are then downloaded and installed automatically. How to perform a full scan of your computer 1. Right-click on the McAfee symbol in the lower left of you screen. 2. Click On-Demand Scan from the list that appears. 3. When the following screen appears, click Start 4. McAfee VirusScan will now attempt to scan and clean any viruses found on the computer automatically. 5. If viruses are found, repeat these steps until no viruses are found. 7
