CLARITY (working name of module) is a module designed to allow interactive analysis of data from multiple sources within a project, or from an external ASCII file. At present it can be run in two forms: 1) As a series of separate windows 2) As a series of windows contained within one over-arching main master window. The form used is controlled by a setting in the configuration file called user_def.sbi This can be modified easily via the Edit -> Preferences options from the main TS menu bar. Click on the Miscellaneous settings option. 1. Click on Miscellaneous. 2. Check this box on or off as desired. 3. Press Apply Press Apply to make your change be permanent. Checking the box labeled Use Clarity Master Window will cause Clarity to have the following initial appearance: Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 2

Clarity Master window appearance If the box is unchecked then there is initially only a small control panel window and each new Clarity display window is a separate window. It is a personal preference as to how you run the module. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 3

Starting Clarity The Clarity module is located on the Tools pulldown menu of the main TerraStation window. For the rest of this document, CLARITY will be run in the mode with the over arching master window. Data Selection You can choose whether you wish to use data located within an existing TerraStation project, or whether you are loading in data from an ASCII file. ASCII File Format The ASCII file must be TAB delimited. The first line should have the name of the columns of data. All other lines should have data entries for the columns. For example: Well Depth Mat Sample # Lith Lith_Ass Grain size (cat.) Well A Core 1 Sm Massive fsl Well A 4703 Core 2 c.sl Cemented lithotypes fsl Well A Core 10 mcms Debritic sandstones msl Well B 2175 Core S5 Sdw2 Dewatered sandstones fsu Well B Core S11 Sdw1 Dewatered sandstones fsu And so on. TerraStation Project Data Set the Data Source setting to Project Data. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 4

You can select to work on a single well or multiple well data set. Press the Select Well button for single well and select the well from the list of wells in the project. For multiple well work, you press the Select Wells button and define a well collection as you would in other multi well parts of TerraStation. It is assumed the user is familiar with how to do this. Note that the IMAGELog window type is NOT currently available in this mode. Creating your first graph window OK, so assume you have selected a well, and that well has several types of data associated with it curves, picks, lithology information and so on. We shall add our first graph. i) Press the Add a New Graph button. ii) A new window appears the Graph Preferences window. An example is shown below. iii) Select the graph type. iv) Select the data. iii) iv) Click on the type of graph you want. For example a Bar Chart. Now select the data to be displayed in this graph from the Data Variables section of the control window. Bar charts and Pie Charts are intended to use character string information, Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 5

such as descriptions, well names, etc. In this case we are using the SUBGROUP field of the Facies A data file. Note that the list of items in the Data Variables area is sensitive to the data available on the well or wells you are using. We access it by opening the Facies A file by clicking on the + sign next to the Facies A entry in the list. Then left click on the SUBGROUP field. See the image below At this point we can press the Accept button. And our initial graph should appear in a window Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 6

Data item Source file of data Number of data items in the graph Note: When using the SUBGROUP field from lithology and facies files we look up the name of the subgroups from the tllthgrp.v70 and tlfacgrp.v70 control file system. We do a similar look up when you use the SUBTYPE field from the Pick, Breakout, Linear Features and Vug files. Add a second graph. This time add a Histogram of the Gamma Ray data from the Curves part of the well data. A second graph window is now present Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 7

To demonstrate how the two graphs are now intimately linked, click on one of the bars in the barchart. Notice the bar changes color. Not only that but on the other graph, parts of the histogram also change color. The colored parts of the histogram indicate where those Gamma ray values are from the Coal (C) intervals indicated in the Facies A file. The constraint defined by the bar is shown at the top left of each Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 8

window, as is the number of data items in the highlighted bar(s). This is shown as a number in parentheses next to the N = count text at the top left. This also works in reverse. You can click on a histogram bar and get highlighted areas on the bar chart showing those facies subgroups where the Gamma Ray data highlighted is located. Summary of Highlighting data (creating a constraint) 1) User can left click on a bar chart bar, histogram bar, an entry on a pie chart s key entry, or the actual pie segment, and data in that bar (or category) will be highlighted on the other plots. (note that pie charts and whisker plots do not actually show the highlighted data) 2) If the user makes a left click and holds the left mouse button down and move the cursor over bars, or pie chart key entries and the displays will instantly update as you move the mouse. This will highlight just the current bar the cursor is over. 3) If the user makes the initial left click with the SHIFT key pressed, and then holds the mouse down and moves the cursor, all the bars from the first click position to the current position will be highlighted. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 9

Hold SHIFT key and Start left click here Drag to here 4) Selecting multiple, separate bars on bar charts and pie charts. You can left click with the CTRL key pressed and click on separate bars (or pie slices) within a bar chart (or pie chart) or whisker plots in order to select just data in those bars. You can unselect bars on bar charts, pie charts and whisker plots by simply CTRL-clicking on them again. You can also choose everything but a specific bar as the constraint (the NOT logical operation) by holding the ALT key and left clicking on a bar. For example Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 10

By pressing the ALT key as you click the left mouse, you can select a bar that becomes a NOT constraint. 5) Selecting on a Pie Chart you can left click and drag on items in the key to select multiple groups. You can also left click and drag ANTI CLOCKWISE around the pie chart itself to select items. As you do you will see a line showing what selection has been made. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 11

You can use the CTRIL-left click method to select/deselect individual pie slices. You can use the ALT-left click method to select everything but the slice you click on (the NOT logical operation). 6) Selecting constraints on a ternary diagram. You can left click and drag a parallelogram shape on the ternary plot to select a range of data to act as constraints. The parallelogram defines ranges for the data on the top and left corners of the plot. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 12

As you add more graphs - crossplots, ternary diagrams, and so on, when you click on an item in one graph, the data is highlighted on all the other graphs. Selecting constraints on more than one graph. It is possible to select constraints from two or more graphs. Simply CTRL-left click on a bar in a different graph from the current constraint. For example: CTRL-click here. Now CTRL-click here. In this way you can set a constraint such as only those points that have this pick type and is in this Facies. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 13

Clearing the Constraint Simply press the Clear Constraints button on the control panel to remove the currently specified constraint (highlighting). IMAGELog window This window type is NOT available if your data is loaded from an ASCII file. It is only for use with TerraStation projects. Press the Add a New Graph button. Then on the control window click on IMAGELog in the list of Graph Types. Press the Select Template button and choose the IMAGELog template to be displayed. Finally press the Accept button to have the template display. Note that the more complex your template, the longer it may take to appear. Note: If you have multiple IMAGELog windows displayed they will ALL USE THE SAME template. There can be a different well in each window, but the template is going to be the same in every window. Once the template is displayed in the window, any depths that meet the current constraint are shown in a narrow strip down the left hand side of the image. See below Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 14

Here is an example. Note the orange colored highlighted areas down the left hand side. These indicate those depths that currently pass the defined constraint(s). Control the vertical scale using the slider on the right. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 15

You can also highlight an interval on the display and it becomes the active constraint on all the other plots. Just left click on the top (or bottom) of the zone of interest, and drag the mouse to the opposite end and release. In multiple well projects, you select the well you want for the window from the list on the right hand side of the Preferences window. As you click on the wells in the list, the IMAGELog window will display the data for that well. In this way you can quickly scan through the wells. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 16

Stereonet Window This is a specialist window that is intended to display DIP/AZIMUTH data from the pick/breakout files within TerraStation project data. The plot currently uses a Schmidt stereonet. Again, points defined within the currently active constraints are highlighted. The colors of the remaining data use the color of the pick category as defined elsewhere in TerraStation. This value sets the maximum edge of the stereonet. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 17

Selecting a constraint on the Stereonet You can left click and drag on the stereonet, and you get an arc shaped polygon that allows you to select a specific dip and azimuth range. As in other plots, as you do this the other plots will automatically highlight data within that constraint area as you move the mouse. Create a New Setup Pressing this button will delete all current windows and allow you to begin a fresh set of windows. Interval Weighting It is possible to set a weighting mode such that those data types that cover an interval (a top and a bottom depth) such as facies, lithologies, certain engineering data (e.g. DST, Cored intervals, PERF s etc.) are weighted by how much that interval covers with respect to the well as a whole. This toggle is located on the main control panel. The default setting is Count which does not perform any interval weighting. Saving and Restoring displays Windows position, size and contents will be remembered when you close your Clarity session down and automatically restore the next time you start Clarity. In addition, you can choose to save your setup with a specific name by pressing the Save As button and then use the Restore button to use that specific setup. These buttons are located at the bottom of the main control panel. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 18

Well Control In multiple well TerraStation well mode an option called Well Control is present on the main control panel. On pressing this button you are presented with a panel containing the current wells in the working collection. The control window looks like You can quickly switch wells off and on thereby eliminating them or adding them back in to the data displays. Simply check or uncheck the box to the left of the well names to add or remove them from the working data set. Note this does not eliminate them from the well collection, it simply switches them off/on while analysing the data. The Interval Control options allow you to reset individual depth ranges, or reset the intervals to the initial intervals defined in the well collection. To modify an individual wells active depth range, simply click on the well name in the list, then edit the Top Depth and Bottom Depth boxes on the right of the list. Then press Apply. Note that the depth interval shown on the well list does not change. That is the original depth interval from the collection. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 19

Line fitting on Crossplots When performing crossplots you can fit regression lines through the data. Simply right-click on the crossplot and select Line Fitting from the menu. A small window appears. On this window you can select lines to be fitted through All of the data, and optionally through just the data meeting the current constraints. Below is an example showing both lines. The correlation coefficient and line fitting equations for the two lines are along the top of the plot. Correlation coefficients and equations for line fits. All data is in black, constrained data is in the highlight color (orange) Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 20

Modifying data ranges interactively This capability is only available for histogram ranges and crossplot X and Y axis ranges. a) Histograms You can grab and move the left or right edge of a histogram and cause the left or right range value to change. For example, here is the initial display of a histogram Left click here and hold down the button. At the same time move the mouse to the left. As you move the mouse the right hand maximum value changes. You can do the same thing on the left hand edge to adjust the minimum value. Note that your initial click should be as close to but outside of the left or right edge of the histogram box area as possible. The mouse pointer icon will change momentarily to a double headed arrow ( ) Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 21

You can also grad and move the mouse in the center of the bottom of the histogram box area and slide the distribution left or right. This will keep the range of the data constant, but change the start and end values. Left click here (just below the box) and hold down the button. At the same time move the mouse to the left or right. You can set the default range back by simply right-clicking in the histogram and choosing Reset from the menu. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 22

b) Crossplot This works in a similar manner as for histograms. The X axis modification is identical. The Y axis is modified by left mouse button clicking just outside of the bottom or top lines of the crossplot box and holdingthe left button down and simultaneously moving the mouse. To adjust the top value of the Y axis, left click and hold here then move. To adjust the left value of the X axis, left click and hold here then move. To adjust the lower value of the Y axis, left click and hold here then move. To adjust the right value of the X axis, left click and hold here then move. You can set the default ranges back by simply right-clicking in the crossplot and choosing Reset from the menu. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 23

Other Notes: Pie Charts and Bar Charts are intended for use with text type data. Histograms, crossplots, probability and ternary plots are intended for use with numeric data: Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 24

Whisker plots are intended for use with text (on the X axis) and numeric data (on the Y axis): Note that data satisfying the currently active constraints are shown as smaller, colored bars within the main bars. You can zoom the horizontal axis if there are a lot of whisker bars on the plot, by left clicking and holding the mouse button down at the bottom left corner of the graph and moving to the right. You can then grab and move in the middle part of the bottom of the graph to slide the displayed bars left and right. Finally, you can set the default display back by simply right-clicking in the whisker plot and choosing Reset from the menu. Clarity Documentation (v7.418) page 25
