4 Made2Manage SQL Made2Manage SQL The following hardware and software requirements for Made2Manage (M2M) SQL versions are effective with M2M version 7.5. The information appearing here reflects baseline requirements as known when this document was published. Standards may change over time, based on the availability of hardware or software, and the amount of time elapsed since publication of this document. You can find up-to-date hardware and software requirements on Aptean Knowledge. Note: This document lists the hardware and software requirements for ERP and the Made2Manage optional modules only. For more information about the third-party tool requirements refer to the respective thirdparty tool documentation. Executive Overview Server Although there are many components within a server system that determine overall performance, the crucial element in M2M is Disk Input/Output (I/O), and more specifically, disk write speed. Following are a few key elements within a server system that boost or increase the Disk I/O: Use Hardware RAID, not software RAID. Pair two SSDs together in a RAID 0 configuration to obtain faster performance from your drives. Use a RAID controller card with at least 512 MB of cache with battery backup to ensure data safety in case of power failure and increase the performance of the RAID arrays. Separate the SQL Database and the SQL Transaction Log files onto two separate spindled disks (for example, two separate RAID arrays). Note: M2M support can provide SQL Database Administrations assistance on a per fee basis. Please contact your Account Executive for details. Tip: Aptean recommends using the CliBench Mk III program to determine the disk write speed. You can download the software from at no charge. The Average Disk Write Speed using CliBench can vary greatly from element to element and vendor to vendor. Technical.Consulting@aptean.com for a copy of the utility if the above website address is not available. Aptean also recommends that all Servers that you use for Made2Manage (such as the, Made2Manage Server, and reporting Server) are configured to use only Static IP addresses. Dynamic IP addresses are temporary, and can change over time. This can cause issues if you do not restart the M2M services when the IP address changes and result in slowdowns, lockups, or loss of data. Hardware and Software System Requirements Page 1

5 Made2Manage SQL Database Administrator SQL Database Administration is required for operations management, and includes (but is not limited to): Managing database integrity, backup, recovery, access and changes Tuning and monitoring performance Initiating and managing user access and security Specific training is necessary to administer. General network administration preparation is not adequate. Administration training is available in most areas. Made2Manage ERP Server This section discusses the minimum hardware and software recommendations for an M2M Server in which only the core M2M services are installed. Note: It is recommended to have a separate for the M2M databases. Implement the following guidelines to improve your M2M 7.5 Server performance: Set up your server hardware to handle the number and type of transactions generated by your users. Have a dedicated server to run M2M and its associated applications. Follow good maintenance and backup procedures. Defragment your hard disk Install multiple servers if the number of users is greater than 25. Note: The recommendations given in the following table are only the minimum requirements to obtain a good performance from the M2M Server. 8 Made2Manage SQL 1 The number of transactions processed is as important as the number of users that access the database. 2 The RAID requirements specified are for the system which is specified in the SysPath. 3 Essentials (formerly Windows Small Business Server or SBS) is not supported as it does not support domain connectivity. Essentials cannot trust any other domains nor can it have any child domains. Also, some optional modules may not support some Operating Systems. Note: - Purchase quality components that provide a high level of performance and dependability. It is important to know the server and disk performance before you obtain hardware. The better the disk/system performance, the better M2M will run. - Inadequate disk write speeds will severely impact the performance of M2M. - The Front Side Bus (FSB) speed and the amount of CPU cache can affect the CPU performance. - M2M will support Microsoft operating systems through the end of life date established by Microsoft. 9 Made2Manage SQL Made2Manage M2M uses the Microsoft database platform to manage your enterprise data. It is recommended to have the M2M on a separate machine for better performance. Set the max server memory option on the. If you do not do this, the will use more and more memory and the operating system may not have sufficient memory available, resulting in poor system performance. If both the and the Made2Manage Server are the same, then ensure that the max server memory value set is no more than 60% of the available memory. If the is different, then adjust the max server memory value taking into consideration the operating system memory. For example if the server has 64 GB of RAM, set the max server memory value to 56 GB leaving 8 GB for the operating system. 11 Made2Manage SQL Made2Manage Report Server You can install Reporting Services without other components on a single computer. Reporting Services includes a complete set of tools and applications for business reporting and consists of the following: Server applications: Report Server service (which includes the Report Server Web service, background processing application, and Report Manager), Report Builder, Report Designer, Model Designer, Reporting Services Configuration tool, and the Reporting Services command line utilities Client application: Management Studio used to configure the report server, manage jobs, manage shared schedules, and configure role definitions. The following table describes the minimum requirements for a Server which handles the M2M Reporting Services alone without other components. Note: The following recommendations assume that the number of M2M users accessing the Report Server is fewer than 25. 13 Made2Manage SQL Made2Manage Remote Connectivity (Terminal Server) Remote connectivity uses a Terminal Server in the location where the M2M SQL data server is located. This server should not be the M2M SQL server, but a separate server. Remote client workstations then attach to the Terminal Server over a Wide Area Network (WAN) and run M2M on the Terminal Server. The screen shots are transmitted to the remote client workstations. Tip: Upgrade your routers and switches to boost performance. Terminal Server CPU 1 8 core 1 CPU Socket for each M2M Users RAM 2 4GB Memory (RAM) is the optimum limit for each core of a CPU. 512 MB per M2M User Note: If you are using more applications (such as Microsoft Office, CAD Apps and so on), more memory per user is required. Made2Manage Planning and Scheduling The Made2Manage Planning and Scheduling module is designed to schedule and plan jobs on the shop floor. This software (formerly known as Synchronizer) is part of the Optional Module installation. This section describes the requirements of the Planning and Scheduling Server. You can have a dedicated Planning and Scheduling Server or you can install both the Made2Manage Server and the Planning and Scheduling Server on the same machine. From SP2, the Planning and Scheduling Client is installed as part of the Made2Manage Client installation. Therefore, refer to the Made2Manage/SQL ERP Workstation section to understand the requirements of the Planning and Scheduling Client. Important: It is highly recommended that you use a dedicated Planning and Scheduling Server for optimal performance. If you have set up multiple companies, use a dedicated Server for each company. 22 Optional Modules / Integration Modules Made2Manage Advanced Configurator The M2M Advanced Configurator consists of four components: The Web Server The Application Server The Database Server The Client Workstation Generally, the Web Server (IIS) is installed on the Application Server which the customer wants to use as the Advanced Configurator (Product Configurator) Server. The Database Server (SQL/M2M Server) is typically a separate physical system. The three server components can reside on a single hardware platform or server, but we do not recommend it. It is recommended to install the Advanced Configurator on a dedicated Server that does not have any other Made2Manage Web-based application such as M2M API WCF Service, the Aptean Service Gateway, or Made2Manage Gateway (M2M VIP) installed. Advanced Configurator will not work on a server that is a Microsoft Exchange Server or a Domain Controller. 31 RAID Definitions and Configurations RAID Definitions and Configurations In a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), hard disks are combined in various configurations and appear to the network operating system as one logical server. Redundancy is built-in so that data can be recovered quickly. RAID increases speed and protects against data loss due to hardware failures. The RAID types are: Software RAID: Often included in network operating systems, this type of RAID does not increase performance. It is not acceptable for use with Made2Manage. Hardware RAID: A SAS/SCSI controller card manages one or more RAID arrays independently. It increases the speed and protects against data loss. Hardware RAID Configurations Smaller drives are preferred over fewer, larger ones. More drives use more read/write heads, increasing data access and speed.
