1 INSTALLING WINDOWS ON YOUR MAC USING BOOT CAMP C188 TUTORIAL Fall, Back up your computer to an external drive, and plug in your computer. You will also need a blank USB drive of at least 16GB in size. Unplug unneeded peripheral drives and devices, and plug in the USB drive you will use for this Windows installation. (some 2015 model notebooks running El Capitan will not require a USB drive to complete the Windows install, but most people will need one). 2. Determine which version of Windows will work with your computer. Note: 2014 Apple notebooks are the last notebooks to allow the use of Windows 7 with Boot Camp. For 2015 or later notebooks, you will have to use Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. If you have the choice, Windows 7 is recommended. If your computer will not support Windows 7, then Windows 10 is recommended. View this page to verify whether your machine will support the specific Windows version you want to use. 3. Download your Windows Operating System as a Disk Image file (ISO). - Instructions for downloading free student software from UC Berkeley s Software Central can be found at: (They use Office for Mac in this example, but remember You are downloading the Windows Operating System) - At the end of this step, you should now have a.iso file of Windows somewhere on your computer, preferably on the desktop. 4. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create your Windows install disk and ultimately install Windows. Open Boot Camp Assistant. You can use spotlight search to find it, or find it in the Utilities folder.

2 It will open to a window that looks like this. Click continue. At this point, the process differs depending on the model of your computer, your current OSX version, and the version of Windows you want to install. For Certain later model notebooks running OSX El Capitan, the Boot Camp Assistant window will now look similar to this. If your screen looks like this, then click THIS LINK to continue. If your Boot Camp Assistant screen instead looks similar to this, AND you will be installing Windows 10, then click THIS LINK to continue. OTHERWISE If your Boot Camp Assistant screen looks like this AND you will be installing Windows 7, then simply continue reading

3 INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 7 continued If you need less guidance, and want to save time, you can follow this link to the Apple instructions for installing Windows 7. It is a more concise version of this tutorial. If not done already, plug in your 16gb or larger USB drive. Remember, it should either be blank or you should be willing to lose the data on it because Boot Camp will automatically erase it during the process. Installing Windows 7 involves a few extra steps. Boot Camp Assistant will sometimes download the incorrect drivers for your computer, so we will have to manually download them from Apple. First, make sure the TOP 2 BOXES ARE CHECKED. AND UNCHECK the INSTALL WINDOWS 7 BOX. We will come back and install later. Select the Choose button to find and select the ISO image file you previously downloaded of Windows 7. Boot Camp Assistant will automatically recognize the USB drive plugged into your computer. Click Continue.

4 The Task Status will start by indicating that it is Copying Windows files. Let it do this. The next task it will switch to is Downloading Windows support software just like the image to the right. After it has changed to this message, you will QUIT THE BOOT CAMP ASSISTANT APPLICATION. QUIT WHEN YOU SEE THIS We are stopping Boot Camp Assistant from potentially installing the wrong support software onto our USB drive. Instead, we will now manually download the correct support software from Apple. After quitting Boot Camp Assistant, Go to the Apple instructions page for installing Windows 7 at: Next, Click the link at the top of the page to Check the tables below

5 Then it will take you to this part of the page. Scroll down the tables to find your Mac model and click on the number right next to it in the Windows bit column. The link will take you to a page similar to this to download the support software. Remember: Each link goes to a unique version of support software that is specific to the Mac model you selected. So the support software version may be different for you than it is in the image above. The image above is just an example. Click Download to download the support software. The support software comes as a Zipped folder, so when it is done downloading, double click it to unzip the folder.

6 Now we will COPY THE CONTENTS OF THE SUPPORT SOFTWARE OVER TO OUR WINDOWS INSTALLATION USB DRIVE that we were creating with Boot Camp Assistant. The USB drive will have automatically been renamed to WININSTALL. If there are any items with the same names already existing in WININSTALL, then you want to select REPLACE those items with the new ones. Now we can open Boot Camp Assistant again and Install Windows. This time, we will UNCHECK the top two boxes because we have already completed those steps. We will now ONLY CHECK THE BOX FOR INSTALL WINDOWS 7 OR LATER VERSION Then click Continue.

7 Next set the size of the Windows partition that will be created on your hard drive by sliding the bar in the middle of the graphic to the left or right. For the purposes of this class, a minimum of 60 GB is recommended for the Windows partition. If you have a larger hard drive and can afford to allocate more space to Windows, then do so. Here is an example of what it would look like after resizing a 128gb drive. Note: Your partition size will most likely not be the exact same as this. This is just an example. Click Install. When done with this, Boot Camp Assistant will automatically restart your computer and begin Windows Setup.

8 Next, select the partition named BOOTCAMP as the location to install windows. We also need to Format the BOOTCAMP partition. You may or may not see a Format button in the window. If the Format button is not there, first select Drive options (advanced) then the Format button should be visible. Click Format A warning may come up noting that Formatting will erase all data on the partition. Click Ok. Then Click Next.

9 Windows will continue to install. It will take a while. Follow any setup prompts to set personal preferences, etc. After Windows finally starts, and you are at the desktop for the first time, a program called Boot Camp Installer should automatically run. This installs all of the Mac drivers necessary to make Windows work on your Mac. Follow the prompts to finish the install. Done! Now you have Windows installed on your Mac. Whenever you want to boot back to OSX, click on the black diamond icon in the task bar, and select restart in OSX. Whenever you want to go from OSX to Windows, go to System Preferences and click Startup Disk, and then select your Boot Camp partition (or whatever you named your windows partition).

The middle box is automatically selected whenever the top box is selected. Also note that your top box might say Create a Windows 8 or later version install disk This is okay. It makes no difference since you are installing Windows 10. Select the Choose button to find and select the ISO image file you previously downloaded of Windows 10. Boot Camp Assistant will automatically recognize the USB drive plugged into your computer.

11 The process will start, and will look similar to this. It will say Copying Windows files, Downloading Windows support software, etc. Let it finish.
