4 How to Use this Guide This guide provides PCLaw administrative personnel with a set of procedures used to install and/ or update the LexisNexis PCLaw application. It also provides PCLaw administrative personnel with procedures and other information used to install and enable the PCLaw Mobility application. This guide is limited to installing and/or updating the LexisNexis PCLaw application. For an overview and/or information used for PCLaw administration, please refer to appropriate task based documentation and/or online Help files. 1 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

5 Where to Start? If this is the first time you have installed LexisNexis PCLaw, please read this guide carefully before proceeding. Please refer to PCLaw Pre Installation Checklist for a complete set of instructions and the requirements needed to install the PCLaw application. If you are updating from a previous version of LexisNexis PCLaw, please refer to Update LexisNexis PCLaw for a complete set of instructions. 2 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

6 Before Installing the Software Before installing any PCLaw software: 1. Read the installation manual thoroughly. 2. Review and/or print the checklist provided to assist you in successfully completing the installation. 3. Check each item off the list as it is completed through completion of the installation procedure. 3 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

7 Checklist Compliance and Assistance It is pertinent that each item in the checklist be reviewed and completed prior to attempting to install the PCLaw software. If further assistance is needed to ensure that items on the checklist are completed prior to installing the PCLaw software, please follow the links and/or instructions provided. Annual Maintenance Plan: For assistance on obtaining an Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP), please contact the LexisNexis Practice Management Sales department at Requirements: To ensure your firm s system meets and/or exceeds the minimum set of requirements, see PCLaw setup file: To download and run the PCLaw setup file, refer to the Download and Run the Installer topic for assistance. SQL server installation: You will be asked to install PCLaw only or to install SQL Server 2005 Express along with PCLaw. Please follow the instructions provided while downloading the PCLaw setup file. Subsequent PCs: After the PCLaw installation is complete, you will be asked if installation for additional workstations/pcs is required. If so, follow the steps provided in the procedure for adding subsequent PCs. PCLaw initial setup: To complete the initial PCLaw setup, complete the steps provided in the Initializing PCLaw Data topic for instructions. PCLaw Mobility: If PCLaw Mobility will be used by your firm, follow the steps provided in the Installing and Enabling PCLaw Mobility section of this manual. 8 PCLaw Pre Installation Checklist This checklist is intended for use by PCLaw administrators who have reviewed the PCLaw installation documentation and is preparing to install the software on one or more systems in their firm. PCLaw Pre-Installation Checklist Your firm has an active Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP) with a Product Key. The firm s PCLaw Host environment has been determined for the: 1. Operating System (e.g., Windows, Linux, MacOS)? 2. Database (e.g., SQL Server bit/64 bit)? 3. Mobile Devices (e.g., BlackBerry OS, Palm OS)? 4. Data storage location (i.e., C:\PCLaw Data)? The system meets the minimum/recommended set of requirements? The PCLaw setup file has been downloaded? PCLaw installed with SQL option -- SQL installation complete. PCLaw installation complete -- Yes. 1. Additional workstations installed with Data/Network access? 2. PCLaw initial setup complete? Will PCLaw Mobility be installed for the firm? 1. If Yes, complete the Install PCLaw Link as a Service procedure. 2. Enable PCLaw Mobility feature for the entire firm. 3. Enable PCLaw Mobility for each Mobility user within the firm. 9 Download and Run the Installer Installation and update tasks are accomplished using the LexisNexis PCLaw Installer and Updater. It scans the workstation and is used to either install a new installation of LexisNexis PCLaw or update an existing installation. Although the Installer can be run more than once, if it is stopped before completion, it must be restarted from the beginning. Access to the Installer is via your firm s Product Key/Entitlement and is used to download the latest version of the PCLaw application software for new releases, service packs, and/or hot fixes. 6 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

10 Download the Installer 1. Click the download your software link in your Product Key/entitlement . Please contact LexisNexis Practice Management Sales department at if your entitlement is not readily available. 2. Click the link associated with the Download your software from the link below topic. The LexisNexis Delivery window opens. 3. Click the Download button. The Download PCLaw window opens. 4. Complete the pre installation prescribed reading. 5. Download and read the PCLaw End User License Agreement. 6. Click the I have read and agree with the End-User License Agreement button to acknowledge agreement with the Terms and Conditions. 7. From the PCLaw application screen, select the Install PCLaw option. The PCLaw Setup Wizard opens. 8. Go to New PCLaw Installation for new installs or PCLaw Updates for PCLaw application updates to continue. 7 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

New PCLaw Installation After you have obtained and executed the PCLaw setup file, continue with the new PCLaw installation by completing the following steps: 1.

14 7. Perform one of the following: a. Click Continue to initialize the PCLaw data now. The Data Initialization screen opens. Proceed to Initializing PCLaw Data for detailed instructions. or b. Install on Subsequent PCs IMPORTANT: To access the installation file, the computer must have full access rights to the computer where the data and network components were installed.

The steps listed below are used to create a new set of books for each PC that will access the PCLaw application. To install PCLaw on subsequent PCs, complete the following steps: 1. Browse to the PCLaw initial installation PC. The default is: C:\PCLaw Data\COMMON\INSTALL 2. Double click on the SETUP.EXE application file. The Welcome screen opens. 3. 16 4. Select one of the three options and click Next. The Ready to Install screen opens 5. If creating a new set of books, accept the default path on the Select Destination window for the Data and Network components field. Use the Browse button for the Program and Local components field if you want to change the location of the local install. Click the Next Button. 13 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

17 6. When you are ready to begin the installation, click the Start button. 7. As the application starts to install, the system displays a status of the installation. At anytime, you can Cancel the installation. 14 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

8. Once the installation for this workstation is complete, the system asks if there are any additional stations that need to be installed as well. Click the Next button. 9.

On the Data Initialization screen select Prepare a new set of books and click OK.

19 Initializing PCLaw Data The PCLaw application must be properly initialized before use. After the software is installed, you will be prompted to initialize your data. 1. On the Data Initialization screen select Prepare a new set of books and click OK. The PCLaw Preparation Wizard s Welcome screen opens. 2. Click Next on the PCLaw Preparation Wizard Welcome screen. 20 3. Enter the firm name and click Next to continue. The Firm Address and Phone Numbers screen opens. 4. Enter the firms address and phone number(s) as applicable and click Next. The Start up Date window opens. 17 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

21 5. Use the drop down arrow to select a start up date for the firm. Click Next to continue. The Business Type screen opens. 6. Enter the firm s business number and click Next. The Bank Accounts screen opens. 18 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

Accept/enter the default accounting method.

26 Installing and Enabling PCLaw Mobility Setting up PCLaw Mobility requires you to do the following: 1. Ensure that your firm has an active Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP). 2. Install the PCLaw Link as a Windows service 3. Enable the Mobility feature for your entire firm. 4. Enable the Mobility feature for each PCLaw user who will use Mobility: 5. Ensure that user passwords meet the strong password requirements. (Users without a strong password will be prompted to change their password the first time they attempt to log in to the Mobility web site.) 6. Installing the PCLaw Link as a Windows Service To use PCLaw Mobility, you must run a utility provided with PCLaw that installs PCLaw link components as Windows Services.

27 Installing the PCLaw Link as a Windows Service To use PCLaw Mobility, you must run a utility provided with PCLaw that installs PCLaw link components as Windows Services. The utility is available on the Windows Start menu: 1. On the Windows Sart menu, go to Start > Programs > LexisNexis > PCLaw > Utilities > Configure Link to Run as Windows Services. The Install PCLaw Link as Windows Services screen opens. 2. Enter the name and password of an administrative user and click Configure. Enabling PCLaw Mobility The Mobility feature must be enabled for your entire firm and for each individual user. To enable Mobility for the firm: 1.

Log in to PCLaw as a user with administrative rights. 2. Go to Options > Administrator> Security Preferences. The Security Preferences screen opens. 3. Select the Enable Advanced Securitycheckbox. Click OK. 4. Go to Options > Connection Settings. The Connections Settings screen opens. 5. On the Connection Settings tab, select the following check boxes: Use This Set of Books when Connecting with Other Programs Store Password Use Mobility Feature 6. Click OK. 7. 29 To enable Mobility for an individual user: The Mobility feature must be enabled for each individual user as follows: 1. Ensure that PCLaw Mobility has been enabled for the firm before proceeding with the next step. 2. Log in to PCLaw as a user with administrative rights. 3. Go to Options > Administrator> Security. The Security Setup screen opens. 4. On the Users tab, select a user in the list box on the left. 5. In the field, type an address for the user. The user will have to have an address when signing in to PCLaw Mobility. 6. Select the Enable access to mobility feature check box. 7. In the Default Lawyer field, use the drop down arrow to select a lawyer to associate with the user. 8. Assign the user to an available group. 9. Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each user for whom you want to enable Mobility. 10. Click OK. 11. Provide each Mobility user added with the Mobility URL: 26 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

30 Update LexisNexis PCLaw An update installs the new features and fixes associated with a new release. An error message will appear if it is not possible to update from the current version to the Updater version. To obtain the best performance from PCLaw, ensure it is updated. You can have PCLaw do this automatically on a set schedule, or you can update manually. When updating your PCLaw application, be sure the following conditions are met: Ensure all users are logged out of PCLaw. Close all other applications. Make a complete backup of PCLaw and store it on another machine or separate media. You must have Administrator access to perform updates. 27 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

Configure Update Settings To update your PCLaw application, perform the following: 1. On the Options menu, select Administrator, then Update Settings. 2.

This is the default setting. Check for updates weekly, but ask me first. : The process will be observable based on your prompt. Do not check for updates on this machine.

34 PCLaw Manual Update To manually update PCLaw, perform the following: 1. Open the PCLaw application. 2. Go to Help > Live Update From Web. The PCLaw Live Update screen opens. 3. Click the Start Check for Updates link. Your browser may need to install an Active X control to allow the update engine to search your version of PCLaw. 35 4. The web based update engine will check your currently installed version of PCLaw. 5. Perform one of the following: a. If there are updates available, follow the instructions provided on the PCLaw Live Update screen. or b. Upgrade the Server Take the following steps to upgrade to a newer version: 1. Click the Processes tab to ensure the following processes are not running in the background: PCLAW32.EXE PLDOCLNK.

Enter all required information (* = required information) and submit the page by selecting the I have read and agree to the terms and conditions of the End User License Agreement button. 13. Verify the Description field for the Full Install, and then select the Download link on the right to download the PCLaw installer. 14. 42 15. Click Accept to accept the License agreement. 16. Click Continue. 17. Enter the Product Key, if prompted, and click Next. If you are upgrading from one full version to another full version (such as 8.03a to 9.31d or 9.31d to 10.0 SP5) then you need to enter the product key. If you are upgrading within a version (such as 10.01b to 10.0SP5) then you do not need to enter the product key. 18. Click Start to begin the installation. SKIP TO STEP 26 if you do not receive the Data Set Create/Attach screen. 19. Select Attach to an existing data set and click Next.This is only presented if PCLaw is not installed on the computer. A similar screen is presented if the installer you are running is the same version already installed, which also adds the option to reinstall program file. The next screen has two sections, Data FULL ACCESS and Program READ ONLY ACCESS. Unless necessary you may leave the Program READ ONLY ACCESS alone and click Browse next to Data FULL ACCESS to locate your books. Your books should follow a path similar to "C:\PCLaw Data\Data" or "C:\ACG\PCLaw32\Data". The drive letter may vary by system, typically if you store the books locally (on your PC) you search the C drive. Otherwise you may have to look on a network drive (such as a P drive or a drive such as \\SERVERNAME\PCLaw_DATA. Contact your IT staff if you cannot locate your data. 39 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

43 20. Locate your Data folder and click Start to begin the installation. The installation process might take several minutes. 21. Click Next on the Additional Stations screen. 22. Click Finish to close the installation wizard. 40 PCLaw 11.0 Installation Guide

44 23. Click OK if the program prompts you to reboot your computer. 24. Double-click the PCLaw icon on the desktop to open the program and begin the conversion. If no conversion is necessary, the software opens your books. Click Yes to create a backup. If you created a backup during step 7, click No and skip to step Select a Backup location and click OK. 26. Click Yes to start the data conversion. The PCLaw software opens once the data conversion process is complete. 27. Click Options and select Administrator, the Lock System to open the Lock PCLaw System window. 28. Click Unlock to close the Lock PCLaw System window.
