2 Microsoft Windows Updates for the Surface tablet should be checked on a regular basis. As a best practice the Surface tablet: Should be connected to a power outlet. (The tablet may install updates via the tablet battery but it is recommended to keep the tablet connected to a power supply.) The battery power level must be at least 40% charge. A higher battery charge is recommended. 2

3 It is always a good idea start the Surface tablet from an initial startup. If your tablet has been powered on for a while, we recommend a restart of the tablet before you begin the Microsoft Updates. To restart your device: Click the Start button located in the lower left corner of your screen. Tap or click the Power button located in the Start menu. Usually the Power button is located just above the All apps button. When you click the Power button a submenu appears. Click the Restart button. The tablet should begin the shutdown process and will automatically restart. 3

4 After you log back into the Surface tablet, your desktop should appear. Wait a couple of minutes for your tablet to complete the startup process. As this point you are ready to begin the Microsoft Update process. 4

5 Click Start Settings Update & Security. Click the box next to Check online for updates from Microsoft Update located toward the bottom of the screen. Then click the Check for Updates button toward the top of the screen. 5

6 Please be patient. The tablet will connect to the Microsoft Update website. This process can take several minutes. If there are updates the Surface tablet does not have installed, the Surface tablet will automatically begin to download AND install the needed updates. Depending on the number and size of the update files, this process can take several minutes to complete. Please be patient. The tablet is not frozen. The progress bar will increase but it may be very slow. Just let the install run. You may have to move the mouse periodically to keep the Surface tablet from going into Sleep mode. When the update installation is complete you may see the Restart Now button located toward the bottom of the screen. Click the Restart Now button and the Surface tablet will begin the Shut down process. 6

7 You will see this screen shot. Please let your tablet complete this process. Do not cover the screen with the keyboard. Just let the tablet remain in place and complete the update process. 7

8 The percent complete will increase to 30%. At the 30% complete, the tablet may automatically shut down and reboot. This is normal. This is part of the update process. Please do not interfere with this process. This may cause damage to your tablet. 8

9 You may see the following screen. Some updates require a system update. This screen is normal. However, it may seem as if progress bar is stuck or not progressing. It can take a couple of minutes for the progress bar to advance. Let this process complete automatically. If you try to shut down your tablet, you may damage the device. Once this process is complete the tablet will reboot automatically. Please note: some updates may require move than one system update. If you see this process take place a couple of times this is normal. Just let the process complete. 9

10 The Surface tablet will begin to startup in the Microsoft Windows environment. At some point during this process, Windows may require an additional reboot. The tablet may reboot automatically. This is normal. 10

11 Once the Surface tablet has rebooted and updates that require a restart have completed, the Surface tablet will complete the update process. If you see a similar screen with a high percent completion rate, the next screen should be the lock screen to allow you to begin to log back into the tablet. 11

12 This screen indicates all updates have been installed. 12

13 This is the lock screen. You are now able to swipe up the screen to get to the login in screen. 13
