13 Chapter 1 Outline of Machine Administration 1.1 What is Machine Administration? Machine Administration means the application to systems where the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment is installed and involves the support of system operation and maintenance which depends on the hardware used. 1.2 Outline of Functions Machine Administration sets the hardware environment and collects information by monitoring the status of hardware. This information can be used to understand operation status through the display of information in the hardware configuration view. This data also can be displayed as log data. Machine Administration remotely monitors system status, analyzes log data, and detects possible hardware faults. The system administrator is notified automatically when the product life management is required as specified. Preventive maintenance of hardware becomes possible and system reliability is improved as a result. Machine Administration monitors and sets the hardware, sets and displays various types of log data, and displays a Machine Administration menu and command, which provides guidance on maintenance work when hot swapping of hardware is necessary. Machine Administration provides hardware operation tests which also help improve system reliability. If the server is a model connected with SMC, the function of Machine Administration cooperates with SMC. 1
