Installing javaprssrvr 4.0 on CentOS 6.2

1 Part one of this information tutorial, we will walk through the process from a fresh installation of CentOS 6.2 and then install javaprssrv. javaprssrv is a java based APRS Server software for Amateur Radio. 1. Install Base CentOS 6.2 on a computer. I selected no role when asked during the installation of CentOS on this computer used to write the documentation. On all of my installations, I use the Network installation iso and use the URL Location of Type}/ 1. Machine Type is either x86_64 or i When the installation process asks for the set of software to install, I always select Minimal so software does not get install that I would not use on the specific server. 3. Upon completion of the installation, perform yum update to get the latest updates for this version 4. yum install make ncurses ncurses-devel gcc gcc-c++ perl unzip 5. yum install autoconf automake libtool 6. yum install java openjdk java openjdk-devel 7. yum install system-config-firewall 2. 2 1. I had to change VMWare Balloon from a M (Module) to a * Star 3. Exit out of the Menu and save your configuration 4. Save the file 12. reboot computer to boot newly installed kernel 3. Install RXTX 1. Website: 2. Download the latest binaries which at the time of this tutorial, rxtx-2.2pre2, are available 3. Upload the zip file to the server and unzip it 1. unzip rxtx-2.2pre2.zip 2. Run command./configure 3. Run command make 4. Run command make install 4. Copy RXTXcomm.jar to directory where you will be installing the javaprssrv software into. During this installation, I have picked the directory /opt/javaprssrv as my directory 1. cp RXTXcomm.jar /opt/javaprssrv 5. Copy the helper shared objects into the directory which you copied the previous RXTXcomm.jar file into 1. Depending on the architecture of your computer would depend on the directory these shared objects are located within. In my case, I have a directory called x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu 2. cd x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/.libs 3. cp librxtxserial-2.2pre1.so /opt/javaprssrv/libs/librxtxserial.so 4. Install javaprssrv 1. 3 3. Unzip javaprssrv Archive 1. unzip javaprssrv.zip 2. Create a directory on the system someplace for the software. In my testing, staging and production server environments I have used the directory of /opt/javaprssrv 3. mv *.jar /opt/javaprssrv 4. mkdir /opt/javaprssrv/logs 5. mkdir /opt/javaprssrv/configs 6. create a javaprssrvr.properties file which holds the configuration of the server 1. Mv *.jar /opt/javaprssrv 6. Run software by issuing the following command 1. java jar javaprssrv.jar 2. Check javaprssrv.log.# within the logs directory for any error messages.
