OpenManage Server Administrator provides a comprehensive set of integrated management services designed for system administrators to manage systems locally and remotely on the network. 4 Introduction OpenManage Essentials (OME) is a hardware management application that provides a comprehensive view of Dell systems, devices, and components in the enterprise s network. OpenManage Essentials is a web-based and one-tomany systems management application. Using OME, you can discover and inventory Dell systems and other devices and components, monitor system health, and perform system updates. A managed system is any system that is monitored and managed using Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA). A Management station can be any computer where OpenManage Essentials is installed to monitor and discover a managed system. OME enables user to deploy OMSA on the managed node using Remote tasks feature. Advantages of installing OMSA on the managed system When a system with OMSA is discovered and Inventoried, OME gives the users the ability to 1. View detailed hardware inventory information - NIC information - RAC Device Information - Power Supply Information - Embedded Device information - Controller information - Enclosure information - Physical Disk information - Virtual Disk information 4 Deploying OMSA using OME

5 2. View detailed software inventory information - Driver - BIOS - Firmware 3. View Server Health User will be able to determine if Server health is in normal, warning or critical state based on Server Administrator s status 4. Update Servers (Drivers, Firmware, BIOS, application etc.) 5. Perform Remote Server administrator tasks OMSA provides a comprehensive management solution in two ways GUI and command line interface. These command line tasks can be executed using OME. - omconfig: writes values that is assigned by the user to an object s properties. For example: Specific values can be assigned for warning thresholds on components. - omhelp: displays short text help for command line interface. - omreport: displays management information reports of the server. 5 Deploying OMSA using OME

7 Linux OMSA packages OMSA package for Linux are of two types 1. 8 Install Arguments The user can either install Server Administrator Web Server, Server Instrumentation or both on Windows and Linux. These arguments are optional. These arguments are used clean installation of OMSA and not for upgrades. All the windows install parameters work only with.msi packages. 11 Upgrade parameters - Windows 1. REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=VOMUS: This is a required argument for OMSA minor version upgrade using.msi packages. 11 Deploying OMSA using OME

13 Creating OMSA deploy task When a server without OMSA is discovered (using SNMP protocol) it gets classified as unknown. A server with OMSA gets classified as Servers. Note: When a Windows Dell server without OMSA is discovered using WMI protocol, it classified under Servers. 1. Navigate to remote tasks by clicking Manage > Remote 13 Deploying OMSA using OME

14 2. Right click on Deploy Server Administrator, and select Create Deployment Task 3. Create a Deployment Task window pops up. 14 Deploying OMSA using OME

15 4. Enter Task name, select the type of OS (Windows or Linux), browse to the location where OMSA package is saved, and enter optional arguments (See - Install Arguments section). 5. Click Next 15 Deploying OMSA using OME

17 9. Select Schedule and enter the credentials for the server where OMSA is being installed. Select Run now option to run the task immediately. To set a date and time to run the task, select Set schedule option. To activate a schedule for a task, check Activate schedule. Activate schedule is enabled by default when Set schedule option is selected. To disable a scheduled task, uncheck Activate Schedule. 10. Click Finish 17 Deploying OMSA using OME

18 11. Task gets created and task state is set to running irrespective of the schedule. The task execution happens in 2 stages - Downloading package to OME installation directory\system Update\Packages folder - Deploying OMSA on the target this task starts at previously scheduled time 18 Deploying OMSA using OME

20 13. Task is marked completed once OMSA is deployed on the target. The execution details window shows the status, summary and state of the tasks (package download task and OMSA deploy task). The task results can be copied by using CopyResults button. 20 Deploying OMSA using OME

22 Sample OMSA upgrade windows task Sample OMSA upgrade windows task can be used for OMSA minor version upgrade (for example from OMSA 6.1 to OMSA 6.5). This task supports only.msi package. The arguments mentioned in the sample task are required parameters for OMSA minor upgrade task. 1. Right click on Sample OMSA upgrade Windows task, select clone 2. Input information for the newly cloned task window is displayed. Enter a task name and click Ok 22 Deploying OMSA using OME

27 Linux OMSA install The srvadmin-cm RPM that provides 32-bit inventory collector does not get installed on a 64 bit machine. The inventory collector utility feeds software inventory data to OME. Ensure the following 32 bit RPMS are installed on a 64 bit Linux managed node. - compat-libstdc++-33.i686 - pam.i686 - glibc.i686 - zlib.i686 - libgcc.i686 After OMSA installation on Linux server - Restart SNMP service service snmpd restart - Restart OMSA services 1. Navigate to opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin 2../srvadmin-services.sh command to restart OMSA services 27 Deploying OMSA using OME

28 Troubleshooting Tool Troubleshooting tool that gets installed with OME can be used to do specific protocol test. This tool can be launched from the shortcut on the desktop or from the Troubleshooting Tool folder installed along with OME installation folder. Troubleshooting tool can also be launched from with OME 1. Go to Preferences 2. In Security Settings, Check Allow TroubleShooting Tool Launch 3. Click Apply 28 Deploying OMSA using OME

30 A server without OMSA shows no information about server administrator when SNMP test is run in troubleshooting tool. 30 Deploying OMSA using OME

32 Troubleshooting Login failure - You may have entered incorrect credentials (for the managed system). Unable to deploy OMSA - Make sure that the package used is applicable to the system where OMSA has to be installed. - Make sure that the correct arguments are passed during installation. OMSA task is running state for long period of time - Right click on the task, stop the task. Login to managed node, open task manager and end the following processes(if they are still running) 1. omexec.exe 2. msiexec.exe 3. RunBada.exe Recreate OMSA deploy task with package applicable to the managed system and correct install arguments in OME. OMSA is installed successfully, but the version is not updated in OME console - To get updated/installed version of OMSA, perform inventory on the target server in OME. - Typically OMSA installation/upgrade does not require reboot. If the updated version is not reflected, restart SNMP services and OMSA services. 32 Deploying OMSA using OME

33 Frequently Asked Questions 1. Where are OMSA packages downloaded in OME? C:\Program Files (x86)\dell\sysmgt\essentials\systemupdate\packages 2. Where are OMSA packages downloaded on the managed system? C:\WINDOWS\Temp Windows /tmp - Linux 3. Where are logs generated on the managed system? C:\WINDOWS\Temp Windows /tmp/badaxxxx Linux 4. How to configure firewall settings? If Firewall is enabled, it has to be configured on both the OME management station as well as the managed node. To configure the firewall i) On the OME station: 1. Open TCP port Add the application "omremote.exe" (located in Essentials\bin) to the Firewall exception list. ii) On the managed system that is to be updated: 1. Run the following command using the command prompt on a Windows managed system: "netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin" Summary This white paper describes how to create an OMSA deployment task using OME, location to download OMSA packages, arguments used during installation and advantages of installing OMSA on the managed node. Installing OMSA on the managed system will help system administrators to manage the systems better using OME.
