2 2 Welcome to the tutorial of Blackboard Collaborate V11 This tutorial will help you to understand step by step, how this online collaboration platform works. Blackboard collaborate allows us to make presentations quickly and easily with video resources, audio, whiteboard, chat, verbal communication or presentations. With this tool the participants can visualize the conferences or presentations from their home, office or other places. Another advantage of Blackboard Collaborate is that the conferences can be recorded and consulted afterwards. What should I do first? 1. Go to: 2. Choose the option Do I have JAVA? And click over the bottom Verify JAVA version. 3. After the scan, you will be told if you need to update the version installed on your computer. 4. If need, install the newest JAVA version in the following link: 5. You need to have ready the speakers. 6. In online conferences you will probably need a microphone. The webcam is optional and is rarely used in the conferences.

3 3 For online conferences: For online conferences, follow these steps: 1. Go to provided link. You can copy and paste it in your browser. 2. If this window appear, it s recommended that you update the Java version as soon as possible. Select uptdate and follow the steps that your operating system provides.

4 4 3. Write the name your name in the blank space and then left click Log In button. 4. If you are using Explorer the application will run automatically. 5. If you are using Google Chrome you will have to save the meeting.jnlp file and run it after worse from your PC or laptop, this will start the Blackboard Collaborate classroom application.

5 5 5. If you are using Firefox Mozilla, a dialog box will appear. Select the Open option (it s not necessary to save it on the computer), this also will start up the blackboard application. 6. After running the meetinn.jnlp the next window will appear. Please don t cancel. 7. The next Security warning will display, have no fear,it s only your Windows system making shure that you trust the source, so select the run option.

6 6 8. At this time de JAVA platform will start running. 9. This is the signal that the Blackboard collaborate application it s loading on your computer. 9. The next step it s to select the type of connection that you will be using during de session (DSL, Wi-Fi, Dial), DSL it s the must recommended. 10. The application will open automatically. The connection window will appear and disappear automatically.

7 11. Finally you re at the virtual classroom of Blackboard Collaborate. This is the working area of the application. 12. In the left you ll find the communication sections. Audio and video: In this area you can set and adjust the audio and video devices Participants area: In this area you can watch the participants that are online in the session. Chat area: In this area you can comunicate with other participants.

8 8 Whiteboard area: In this area the conferencist or moderator can share information. 13. Now you have to make shure that you ll be able to participate an hear correctly setting up and adjusting your audio and microphone. 14. Select the Audio setup wizard option in the Audio section of the Tools tab. Available at the upper side of the Balckboard window.

9 9 15. Click the Refresh option and then select the speakers that you consider correct. Finally, click the option OK. 16. Click the Play option and listen to the audio message.

10 You can increase the volume by mobilizing the slider to the right, or you can decrease it mobilizing the volume slider the left. When you find the right setup, click the Stop option. 18. If you click Yes, then you have finished this procedure. If your answer is No the following window will be displayed.

11 In this window appears a list of possible speaker problem resolutions. After reading them, you have to click the option Try Again and the application will return you to the first window of Audio Setup Wizard. 20. Click the option Refresh and then select the device that you consider correct. Finally, click the option OK.

12 21. Click Record and speak into your microphone, you can adjust the volume slider until it shows a green or yellow color. When done, press Stop. 22. To hear the recording press Play.

13 If you click Yes, then you have finished this procedure. If your answer is No Blackboard will give the option of problem resolution as follows. 24. In this window appears a list of possible microphone problem resolutions. After reading them, you have to click the option Try Again and the application will return you to the first window of Audio Setup Wizard.

14 You can see in this space the name or video (if the person is using a webcam) of the conferencist or other participants. 26. If the participants have to talk in the conference (besides the conferencist), you have to press talk. When you finish, press again talk. Don t forget this last step because if you don t do this, other participants will not be able to talk. 27. In this window you can watch the name of other participants. You can send them icons (smiley face, applause ) or you can raise your hand if you have any doubt.

15 This is the chat area. All the messages that you write in this area will be seen by all the participants in the room. If you want to send a private message to a participant, you will have to make a right click in his/her name and select the option send a private message. For pre- recorded conferences: For pre- recorded conferences, follow these steps: 1. Go to provided link. You can copy and paste it in your browser. 2. A file named nativeplayback.jnlp will appear in the bottom of your browser. You have to click the option Open.

16 16 3. The recording of the conference will be displayed automatically in your computer. It may take a wild to your system to load the session depending on your internet connection. 4. You ll see a playback controls on the bottom of the Blackboard collaborate window. They ll aloud you to play the recording, also rewind, fast-forward an pause it. When finished just close the window. Remember that for pre-recorded conferences you will need: 1. Speakers or headphones with an adecuate volume. 2. The last version of JAVA.
