2 A. Release notes This release contains a significantly revamped graphing interface in the deterministic module. Enhancements to the graphs include the following: A new Series as Column graph available on the exhibit toolbar enables you to review trends in your data by viewing the development factors down each age of development. The graph also contains interactive features such as excluding outliers and setting default and manual selections, similar to the features available directly on the exhibit. To specify a default factor, define which of your displayed averages, prior selections, or other statistics you want as your selection by clicking the + next to its label in the legend, and/or remove it by clicking the -. On the Ratio to Ultimate and Series as Rows exhibit graphs, you can quickly add another series to the graph for comparison. For example, you might add Incurred Loss Development or Paid ALAE Development to your graph of Paid Loss Development, and once there you can toggle the comparison on and off via the Comparative Graphs icon in the graph toolbar. Many such graphs already have default comparisons selected for you to start with. A new Graph Options control on the main ribbon allows you to limit the number of exposure periods graphed across all graph types. For example, you can limit all of your methods and reports to graph only the most recent 10 periods (as opposed to all the periods in your triangle, especially helpful when viewing large triangles). You can also limit the Box-Whisker plots to graph the most recent X periods which helps to remove some of the variability being driven by the older exposure periods. If outliers exist on your Box-Whisker Plots (i.e., a development factor that falls outside the upper or lower fences or a 1.5x multiple of the 25 th and 75 th percentiles), you can now exclude these factors from your average statistics directly on the graph by right-clicking on the value and selecting Exclude from Statistics. You can modify the project s default graph style (e.g., axes, typefaces, titles and legends, etc.) or create a new graph style that can then be shared with other tables or projects. This feature is available via the Graph Style icon in the graph toolbar. A stacked bar graph type is now available for all method and report graphs. You can control this setting from the Graph Settings icon in the graph toolbar. A new zoom feature allows you to more closely view a section of the graph to see finer detail. Press the Enable Zooming icon in the graph toolbar to access the zoom features, enable the Panning icon to scroll the graph, or select the 1:1 icon (or double-click) to reset the graph back to its normal view. Clicking or hovering over an item on the graph now highlights the related description in the legend, and vice versa, making it much easier to identify specific items on the graph. Also, hovering over a point on the graph displays the underlying data for that specific point. We have also revised some of the system s default collections to take better advantage of the new graphs. These collections will be part of the standard desktop for any new files created with this release. We updated all Development collections in the Deterministic group to include some of the new graphs described above. We also updated the Claim, Loss, ALAE, and S&S Summary collections as well. Existing Arius APJ files that use these system collections will be automatically updated with the additional diagnostic information. We also added new collections for Claim Diagnostics, Loss Diagnostics, ALAE Diagnostics and ULAE Reserves Based on Ratio of ULAE to Loss. They are available for review and to add to your existing display from the Collection Library. If you want to display/use these new collections in your analysis, simply drag them from the 1

3 Collection Library and drop them where you want them in the left navigation pane of your analysis file (for example, when creating a new Arius project, these new collections are included in the navigation pane under Deterministic Analysis Claims (or Loss or ALAE, etc.)). Version 2.9 resolves the following issues: Copy-paste issue When you paste values from Excel into cells in an Arius table, copying values formatted as % in Excel could result in blank cells in the Arius table. Imported RP file When you import an RP file into Arius that includes the Premium Development method in its Comparison of Ultimate Claim Estimates report, an error message displays and the file will not open. (Also note that the generic Premiums table in ReservePro does not exist in Arius; any data in that Premiums table will need to be re-entered into the Earned Premium, Written Premium, or Ultimate Premiums table in Arius.) Print to PDF You could receive an error when the report set includes a number of tables in multiples of exactly 10 pages and ends with a Page Setup. API The Arius API would not retrieve individual/specific statistic row labels and the related vector of data from development exhibits; this capability had worked in versions earlier than 2.8. Footnotes Footnotes on user-defined methods or reports could be unintentionally deleted in certain circumstances when you edited other properties of that user-defined table. Multiple SDFs Under certain circumstances, the selected development factors row related to a specific userdefined exhibit could be replicated numerous times when that table was replicated. Missing buttons Some user-defined triangles did not display the cumulative/incremental button on the window s tool bar. Range names In the Export to Excel, certain range names in the resulting files were changed in v2.8 from what they had previously been. All tables now export to Excel named ranges based on the abbreviated table names. Note that this may require a minor update to any system you have put in place that relies on exporting to Excel in earlier versions of Arius, as earlier versions exported certain tables to ranges based on full table names, not the abbreviated names. Specifically, In versions 2.7 and prior, all data arrays and exhibits exported to ranges based on full table names while methods and reports exported to ranges based on abbreviated table names. In version 2.8 all tables exported to ranges based on full table names. Based on user requests, all tables now export to named ranges based on the tables abbreviated names. Historical and selected ultimates could be doubled in files that resulted from copying a segment from another project. In calculated segments, when you had Ultimate Loss (or ALAE/Claims/Premiums/Salvage & Subrogation) set to None (i.e., not calculating across the segments), clicking Refresh Calcs would return calculated values to the Manual Selected Ultimate column in the Comparison of Ultimates Report (for any of Loss, ALAE, etc.) rather than leaving that column empty or retaining the existing manual selections. This release corrects the issue and Refresh Calcs now treats non-calculated Ultimates columns as expected. 2

4 Subsequent updates to version 2.9 The update (release ) resolves the following issues reported by our clients: Ratio to ultimate graphs could have errors if historical SDFs = 0, or if the related development exhibit contains a value of infinity. Ratio to ultimate graphs could incorrectly graph the current period if points are excluded from the related development exhibit. Creating a new segment in an Arius data file from a segment in a different Arius file could result in the Segment pulldown being grayed out and the segments unavailable; this could happen specifically when the incoming Arius file was originally created by importing a ReservePro file from a layer other than Net. When exporting to PDF, setting the option to Print weights table only could affect all methods/reports, not just the intended Comparison of Ultimates report. Data files created or last edited in Arius version 2.6 and then opened in v2.8 or v2.9 (i.e., skipping an update first to v2.7) could potentially lose manual selections made in the Comparison of Ultimates reports. 3

5 B. Installation requirements Arius is designed to last well into the future. Basic system requirements are as follows: Minimum operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 + SP1 or newer (both 32- and 64-bit versions) Minimum hard disk space: 3.5 GB Minimum RAM: 1024 MB, though 2048 MB or more is recommended Related tools: Microsoft Office 2007 or newer (Arius does not support Microsoft Office XP). Arius and its API support 32-bit versions of Microsoft Office. The API also works with 64-bit Office with a Registry update available from the Support section of actuarialsoftware.com. Arius requires the Microsoft.NET Framework (Many Windows installations may already have this; you can confirm it at Control Panel Programs and Features.) An Internet connection for license authentication. 4

6 C. Installation instructions Note: Administrator privileges are required to perform this installation. New Installations For new users this will be a multi-step installation. 1. Make sure any open Excel workbooks are closed before beginning the Arius installation process. 2. Click the Download link and Save (do not Open) AriusSetup_v29.zip onto your computer. 3. Locate the downloaded file and unzip it to Extract (do not Run) AriusSetup_v29.exe. 4. After it is extracted, right-click on the EXE file and select Run as Administrator. It will first need to install a copy of the MATLAB runtime system (or reinstall an updated copy). When you select Yes to download the runtime files, the system downloads the MATLAB Installer from our site A, and you can then follow the instructions to install the runtime. Note that it could take 4 or 5 minutes to download the file, depending on your Internet access speed, and another 5-10 minutes to install MATLAB. 5. You will then re-run the AriusSetup_v29.exe install; as described above, right-click on AriusSetup_v29.exe and select Run as Administrator. B A Alternatively, you can download the runtime directly from Mathworks: site: version: R2013b (8.2) 32-bit B Arius requires that the Microsoft.NET Framework version is installed with your operating system. This may already be the case for many users. However, if the installation routine detects that this is necessary, it will install the updated Framework directly from Microsoft s download server. After installing that update, you may be directed to restart your computer, and then you will restart step #5 again one last time. You may also see installation processes for Microsoft F# Runtime and the Microsoft C++ Redistributable. Both may be required as part of the install as well, though neither should require restarting the install process after they run. Upgrading an Existing System If you previously installed Arius on this computer, the installer will determine if a reinstall of MATLAB is required. Previous installations of Arius will be removed automatically during this upgrade. All of your data files and customizations such as user-defined objects or reports will be preserved. 1. Make sure any open Excel workbooks are closed before beginning the Arius installation process. 2. Click the Download link and Save (do not Open) AriusSetup_v29.zip onto your computer. 3. If you did not need to download and install the MATLAB runtime in step 4, your installation is complete when you see the screen that says Setup has finished installing Arius on your computer. C C Arius requires that the Microsoft.NET Framework version be installed with your operating system. This may already be the case for many users. However, if the installation routine detects that this is necessary, it will install the updated Framework directly from Microsoft s download server. After installing that update, you may be directed to restart your computer, and then you will re-run the AriusSetup_v29.exe install once more; like before, right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. D. Additional information After installation, the application is listed as Arius in your Start All Programs listing. The system installs with three sample project files. They can be found at: C:\Users\<yourname>\Documents\Milliman\Arius\DemoFiles or perhaps displayed as Libraries\Documents\Milliman\Arius Arius_Sample.apj Sample data with 5 segments, a mix of short-, medium-, and longer-tailed lines of business. This is intended to give you a sense of the system's capabilities and a sampling of how the models can be set up with different assumptions for different lines. Note that all of the segments don't necessarily work with all of the models (much like in the real world...).
