1 Windows XP ResNet Installation Guide 1.) Connecting Your Computer to the Network: What you need: a) An Ethernet card - Also called a network interface card (NIC). This may be already installed, or built-in to your computer. If you are not sure that you have an Ethernet card installed or do not know what to look for, contact your building's Residential Computer Consultant (RCC) (note: a modem looks very similar to an Ethernet card, but the jack(s) will be smaller and will not accommodate the network cable). Ethernet cards for PCs and Laptops can be purchased through the K-College Bookstore or at any local computer or office supply store. PCI Ethernet Card (PC) Cardbus Ethernet Card (Laptop) Built-in Ethernet b) An Ethernet cable - Also called a patch cable or a network cable. This cable is used to make the physical connection between your computer s Ethernet card and the jack in the wall; make sure that you purchase a cable that is long enough to reach where your computer is located in the room. Ethernet cables can be purchased at the K-College Bookstore or at any local computer or office supply store (note: do not mistake this for a telephone cable; a telephone cable is smaller and only has 2, 4 or 6 connectors, a network cable has 8). Network Cable Telephone Cable Telephone vs. Network c) An available wall jack - Each room has at least one port per student; the first student in the room will use the blue jack, the second student will use the green jack and if there is a third student, the red jack. 2 Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet card (or the dongle or X-jack, if the Ethernet card is an older laptop device), and the other end into the appropriate jack on the wall. Push the connector in until it clicks in place or you will not get a connection. Note: Do not kink the Ethernet cable, place it where it may be walked on or rolled over by furniture, or pierce it with tacks or nails to hang it. Kinks in the cable may cause connection problems. Install your cable along the edge of the wall or along the ceiling. d) When finished connecting your computer to the network, proceed to step #2: Check Device Manager to make sure the network card is properly installed. 2.) Check Device Manager for Network Adapters: During the installation procedures, you may be asked to insert the original Windows installation CD or diskettes. If the computer was preloaded with Windows, most manufactures keep a copy of the installation files (Cabs) in one of the following locations: c:\winnt\options\cabs or c:\windows\options\cabs. You, the student, will need to provide this. Your RCC or Information Services cannot provide these for you! a) To open Device Manager, click on the Start button, select Control Panel, click on Performance and Maintenance, and then click on the System icon. (note: if you do not see a Performance and Maintenance option when opening Control Panel, look for the System icon instead) b) Click on the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Manager button.

3 c) If you do not see a heading named Network adapters and you are sure a NIC is installed, contact your RCC to diagnose this problem, otherwise continue with the next step. d) Double-click on the Network adapters icon to list the installed adapters. Check for an existing Ethernet Adapter; ignore any Dial-Up Adapters or AOL Adapters that may be listed. e) If there is a icon or a Red X over the icon, please contact your RCC to diagnose this problem. If the network adapter is properly installed, click the OK button and proceed to step #3: Network Configuration.

4 3.) Check Network Configuration: a) To check your network configuration, click on the Start menu, select Control Panel, find and double click on the Network and Internet Connections icon, and then click on the Network Connections icon. (note: if you do not see a Network and Internet Connections option when opening Control Panel, look for the Network Connections icon instead) b) Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties. (note: if there is a red X over the Local Area Connection icon, make sure that you followed all of the steps in section 1, if you still have the red X, please contact your RCC to diagnose this problem.) c) Verify that the Network Adapter listed in the "Connect Using" box is the same as in the Device Manager. If not, please contact your RCC to diagnose the problem. d) If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is listed but the box is not checked, then click the empty box next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

5 e) If TCP/IP is not listed, click the Install button, select Protocol, click the Add button. In Network Protocol:, select TCP/IP then click the OK button to add it. f) If QoS Packet Scheduler is listed, uncheck it. g) Click the OK button, if prompted to restart computer, click the Yes button. Once the computer restarts, return to the Local Area Connection properties screen and proceed to step #4: TCP/IP Configuration. 4.) TCP/IP Configuration: a) Once you have verified that TCP/IP is installed, highlight it and click the Properties button. Continued on next page

6 b) If not already selected, click Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically verify that your screen looks like the one below, then click the Advanced button. c) If any numbers are listed under the Default gateways: section, highlight them and click the Remove button, verify that your IP Settings screen looks like the one below, then click on the DNS tab.

7 d) If any numbers are listed in the DNS server address : section, highlight them and click the Remove button, Uncheck the box next to Register this connection s address in DNS, verify that your DNS screen looks like the one below, then click on the WINS tab. e) If any numbers are listed in the WINS address : section, highlight them and click the Remove button, verify that your WINS screen looks like the one below, then click on the OK button. If prompted to restart your computer, click the Yes, button. Otherwise, continue with Step #5: Verify IP Connectivity:

8 5.) Verify IP Connectivity: a) Click on the "Start" button, select "Run," and type cmd in the space provided and then click the OK button. b) In the command line window that appears, type ipconfig /all at the prompt and hit the enter key (note: you must enter a space between "ipconfig" and "/all") c) Verify the IP Address starts with and that the Default Gateway, DNS Servers and WINS Servers have entries that start with as well. d) If the IP address doesn t start with , then type ipconfig /release (note: you must enter a space between "ipconfig" and "/release"), wait for a message IP address successfully released for adapter Local Area Connection. Next, type ipconfig /renew (note: you must enter a space between "ipconfig" and "/renew") and wait for the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default gateway information to show up.

9 e) Close the command window by typing exit at the prompt. If you receive any errors or the IP configuration is not correct, then contact your RCC to diagnose this problem. When you are finished, continue with step #6: Testing Your Browser. 6.) Testing Your Browser: a) To test your connection to the internet, open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, etc ) and connect to the Kalamazoo College homepage at (note: If this is the first time you have used your web browser, you may be prompted to complete a internet connection wizard, if this is the case please see the Notes section below) b) If you receive any errors contact your RCC to diagnose this problem, otherwise the ResNet installation is complete!

10 7.) Notes If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer and are getting the Internet Connection Wizard when you start your browser for the first time, follow these steps: a) Click on the Start button, and then right click on the Internet Explorer icon. (If the Internet Explorer icon is not on the start menu, look on your desktop.) b) Click on the Connections tab, and then click on the Setup" button. c) The following window will appear, click the "Next" button. d) Choose the "Connect to the Internet" option, and then click the "Next" button.

11 e) Choose the "Set up my connection manually" option, then click the "Next" button. f) Choose the "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on" option, and then click the "Next" button. g) Click the "Finish" button to complete the wizard.
