Optimizing Screen Settings when you connect your PC to your HDTV For Windows Vista users with Notebook or Desktop PCs
This process may require you to make adjustments to the display settings on your PC and to the Screen or Picture settings on your HDTV. When you are done you should have the highest resolution picture possible and it should fit neatly within your display. Note: Windows Vista users with Desktop PCs should connect only the HDTV; no other monitor or display should be connected at the same time. Click Start (Settings) Control Panel Appearance and Personalization Personalization Display Settings. (in Category View) FOR DESKTOPS ONLY: Continue with Adjusting Your Screen Settings. FOR NOTEBOOKS ONLY: From Display Settings select your HDTV from the drop-down menu. Select the checkbox This is my main monitor. Then select the notebook screen from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, depending on your notebook, you can press the Fn key and F2 or F4 or whichever key has an icon of a screen or the words CRT/LCD on it to make the HDTV the main display.
Adjusting Your Screen Settings For Windows Vista users with Notebook or Desktop PCs Check your TV s documentation to find its resolution. This will be either 720p or 1080i or 1080p. If your TV is a 720p device, set your PC s screen resolution to one of the following widescreen resolutions: 1280x720, 1280x768, or 1360x768. If you don t see one of these resolutions, your PC s graphics card may not support widescreen resolutions. You can set the resolution to a standard 4:3 resolution, leaving black columns to either side of the display. The preferred resolution in this case is: 1024x768. If your TV is a 1080i or 1080p device, set your PC s screen resolution to one of the following widescreen resolutions: 1920x1080, 1600x900, 1440x810, 1360x768, or 1280x720. 20 1 From the Display Settings (for Windows Vista users) or Settings (for Windows XP users) dialog, adjust the screen resolution slider to match your HDTV s resolution. 2 Look at the display on your HDTV. There are two kinds of problems that you may notice. The first is that the image may not fit well on the display. The second is that shapes and text may be stretched in one direction or another. If you notice one of these issues, follow these instructions to make adjustments: Depending on the model of your TV, you may find HDTV screen adjustment settings under one of these video menu titles: Aspect, Format, Picture Format, Screen, Picture Size, Size, Viewing Modes, View Mode. An overscan or cropping setting is likely to appear in a menu close to the one that controls the screen settings we described above. 4 If it is impossible to rectify the image, try using a smaller resolution on the PC, and if necessary come back to the TV screen adjustments. Launching ZDTV Software There are two ways to launch ZDTV. 1 One is to double-click the ZDTV icon that was placed on your desktop when you installed the ZDTV software. 2 The other is to use the keyboard shortcut on the ZDTV keyboard. If the magnify function is active, turn it off by clicking on the Magnify On/Off button once. Then press Fn End to launch ZDTV software.
In both cases ZDTV will launch to show this screen: Navigating in ZDTV The ZDTV screen is designed to make it easy to find online content. There is a menu on the left-hand side. ZDTV includes links to a number of a popular sites for each category shown in the menu. Mouse over a menu entry to see icons of these sites. Click an icon to open the corresponding website.
The site will open in a customized browser that is optimized for typical TV viewing distances. The browser opens in full-screen mode, showing as much of the site s page as possible. In this mode, the browser s toolbar is hidden. When the browser s toolbar is unhidden, it displays icons that are larger than usual, so they are easy to see. Only the most basic browser functions are supported, to make the browsing experience as easy as possible. For example, mouse over the Search/Browsing menu item to see the following selections:
Click Google. A browser will open to Google s home page: You can type in any search terms you like, and navigate to any sites you wish based on the search
results. ZDTV lets you go anywhere you want, and provides tools to make it easy to use whatever sites you visit.
Now Playing Minimize the currently open website to expose the menu page again. You may then open another site from the menu page. Several sites may be opened in this way. You may see the sites currently active by viewing the Now Playing panel. Open Now Playing either by moving the cursor to the extreme right edge of the screen in the region below the ZDTV logo, or by clicking the F2 key. The F2 key will also minimize any active sites. Mouse over the icons on the Now Playing panel to activate a control to open or close the corresponding site. If you mouse over the Now Playing icon, you will activate a control that gives you three options: 1 You may close all active sites,
2 you may minimize all active sites so that you will see the ZDTV menu, or 3 you may exit ZDTV and return to your computer s desktop. Note that in the example below, the Now Playing panel was activated by moving the cursor to the extreme edge of the screen while the YouTube page was displayed.
There is a third way that the Now Playing panel may be activated. If you attempt to open more windows than ZDTV can handle, you will receive a message telling you that you must close at least one active site before you may open another. When this happens, the Now Playing panel opens automatically, so that you can easily see which sites you would like to shut down. Note: If you want a site you visit to appear under the Now Playing menu, you must open that site in a new window. To do this, right-click the link that you want to open and select Open in New Window. You can also open a new window using the keyboard shortcut by pressing Ctrl N and typing the URL of the site you want to visit.

How to use the Bookmarking feature The bookmarking feature allows you to add favorite sites to the sets of icons that display under the ZDTV Menu entries. You may also manage your icons from here. You can remove both icons that you added and those that are in the ZDTV default set. There are three paths to access the bookmark features. Each path offers different options; please
read through the entire section to find out how to use all the features available. Add Bookmark Star Use this option if you are already on a webpage that you want to bookmark. To add the current page to your bookmarks: Click on the white star towards the right edge of the ZDTV browser toolbar. The star turns yellow. Click on the yellow star. A dialog box opens. This happens when the website of a bookmarked link automatically appends a suffix like /US/en (for example might become
In the dialog box, click inside the field labeled Folder to view the drop-down menu. Click Choose. Change the description of the page if you like, or accept the default description. Whenever the USB adapter for the ZDTV keyboard is plugged into the notebook computer, any sleep settings are suppressed, as are settings that turn off the display after a certain period. This insures that you may enjoy streaming video and music without interruption. If you are worried about draining your notebook s battery when you do this, you should plug in your computer. When connected to a desktop computer, the ZDTV keyboard and software does not affect any sleep or display settings. By default, sleep settings are disabled on desktop PCs. You may want a desktop PC that you use for ZDTV to automatically sleep when not in use. If you want to do this, we recommend that you set your desktop PC to sleep after three or four hours. The display may be set to
turn off after this same time. This setting will not interfere with any likely viewing pattern. FAQs To access ZDTV Now Playing Taskbar Move the cursor to the extreme right edge of the screen in region below ZDTV logo, and hold it there for a second or two. Click anywhere else to dismiss the Now Playing Taskbar. To view a site in the Now Playing list Click that site s icon in the Now Playing list, OR Hover over that site s icon and click the Open option. To close a site in the Now Playing list Hover over that site s icon and click the Close option. To minimize all sites in the Now Playing list Hover over the Now Playing icon and click the Minimize All option. To close all sites in the Now Playing list Hover over the Now Playing icon and click the Close All option. How to navigate to an arbitrary website
From ZDTV Menu, hover over Search/Browsing, then click Browser. In the Browser address field, type the URL (web address) of the site you want. Press Enter. From any open browser, press F6 once to unhide the ZDTV toolbar, and press F6 a second time to highlight the browser address field. In the Browser address field, type the URL (web address) of the site you want. Press Enter. (Caution: you will navigate away from the site you were originally on). I can t access the controls for an on-line video Some controls for streaming video Plugins will not work when you have enabled a Zoom setting. Try resetting the Zoom level to 100%. I want to listen to music while viewing a slide show or other Internet content Press F2 to activate the ZDTV taskbar. Close any unused sites or applications. Hover over the Music entry in the ZDTV menu list. Click the icon of the site that you will use to play your music. Select and start playing the music you want to hear. Now, minimize the music site by clicking on the minimize
button in the top right of its browser, or by pressing F2. Next, hover over the Picture entry in the ZDTV menu list. Click the icon of the site where you want to view a slideshow. Then launch the slideshow. Don t forget to maximize the slideshow if you want to watch it in full screen mode. Note: You can listen to music while viewing other websites, not just slideshows. Just make sure to turn off the music before you try to launch any other streaming media, like TV shows or movies. Otherwise, you will hear two soundtracks at the same time. Can I use ZDTV as a baby monitor? Yes, you can. You can size two windows to fit on your HDTV screen at the same time. This way, you can keep an eye on your baby in one window while you watch a TV show or movie in another window. You will need a separate computer in your baby s room that has a camera and an Internet connection. In this FAQ we will describe how to monitor your baby using Skype, although you could use another webbased video calling service. We assume that you have already set up Skype service for both your PC and the PC in your baby s room. Press F2 to activate the ZDTV taskbar. Close any unused sites or applications. Hover over the Friends/Messaging entry in the ZDTV menu list. Click on Skype. Establish a video call to the
computer in your baby s room. Now adjust the Skype video window to a size you like and move it to a corner of your screen. Minimize this window to make the ZDTV menu visible. Next, hover over the TV or Video entry in the ZDTV menu list. Open a site that you want to view. Click the Resize button in the top right corner of the browser. Adjust the window to a size you like. Now move your cursor to the far right-hand edge of the screen to activate the ZDTV taskbar. Click the Skype icon to un-minimize the Skype window. Adjust both windows so you can view them comfortably. Now select and launch the show you want to watch. Do not select to view the show in full screen mode! Note: Some sites offer a pop-up option that provides a window for viewing shows that doesn t include the browser toolbar. If you see this option, you may want to select it in order to maximize the area of your screen that you can devote to your show. Legal Disclaimer: Zoom Telephonics, Inc. makes no representation as to the suitability of ZDTV for use as a baby monitor, or for any other sort of monitoring function, including but not restricted to monitoring children, the elderly, sick or invalid people, or pets or other animals, or for security monitoring applications in and around the home, business or other property I want to add or remove some of the icons that display from the ZDTV menu This feature is currently unavailable. Zoom is evaluating the possibility of providing this feature in a future update.
My keyboard isn t responding If your keyboard isn't responding, try pressing a key. If that doesn't work, take out the batteries and then put them back, and then try the keyboard again. How do I disable the Num Lock key at startup? The ZDTV Num Lock is sometimes enabled by default. If you would like to disable the Num Lock at startup, follow the instructions below. Otherwise, press the Num Lock key next to F12 on the keyboard to toggle Num Lock on/off. Go to the Start menu All Programs Accessories Run and type REGEDIT. The registry editor will open. Find HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard and change the value of InitialKeyboardIndicators to 0 to set NumLock OFF. How do I enable the Num Lock key at startup? Go to the Start menu All Programs Accessories Run and type REGEDIT. The registry editor will open. Find HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard and change the value of InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2 to set NumLock ON. How can I change the ZDTV activation code?
You will have to uninstall and re-install ZDTV using the activation code that you want to change to. Go to the Start menu All Programs Zoom ZDTV Uninstall. Double-click and follow the directions to uninstall. Then re-install ZDTV following the installation steps described in Installing ZDTV Software, making sure to use the activation code that you want to change to.
