1 Quick Start Guide SP Usage Simulator Tool Evaluating the Performance of SharePoint Environment Using the New DocAve SP Test Environment Creator This document is intended for anyone wishing to familiarize themselves with the user interface and basic functionality of the DocAve SP Usage Simulator tool. 2 Introduction In order to effectively evaluate the performance of your SharePoint Environment, this tool will generate typical user activity in any MOSS 2007 environment. Using available IP addresses, this tool simulates multiple users logging in from various locations and performing the following: Site access List access List creation Document creation A report will be generated at the end describing the results of the test in terms of time required for the actions described above. You can use this tool to track the performance of your environment under normal and extreme conditions. Installation You may install this tool with the help of the following steps: 1. Copy the SP Usage Simulator Tool folder to any server with a connection to your MOSS 2007 server and extract the contents. 2. Double click on Setup.exe. 3. Follow the simple steps on screen for configuring this tool. You will be asked for a location as well as a language to install this software. You can also apply the license while installing the tool or apply it later directly from the tool s interface. 4. After this, a screen will indicate that all services have been installed. How to use this tool Page 2

3 You will find three tabs in the pop up: General, Station, and Stress Rules. You may use this tool with the help of the following steps: Gathering the tree structure of SharePoint environment In the General tab, you will find two sections: Target SharePoint Environment Work Station Configuration Targeting SharePoint Environment In the Target SharePoint Environment section, you must enter the DNS IP address, IP address, Usernme, and Password in the corresponding fields. This represents your MOSS 2007 Front-End Server. Configuring Work Station In the Work Station Configuration section, enter the number of stations you wish to deploy and the number of users you wish to assign to each station. These will be responsible for generating the activity in SharePoint. Click on the Apply button. This will launch a command prompt responsible for gathering the tree structure of your SharePoint environment. The duration of the process depends on the number of sites, site collections, and web applications in your environment. Once the process is complete, the window will automatically close. Page 3

4 Generating activity in SharePoint In the Station tab, enter the DNS IP address, IP address, User Name, and Password in the corresponding fields. This represents the workstations that will be generating activity in SharePoint. *Note: You may use the SharePoint Front-End Web as a workstation, though this is not recommended. In order to accurately monitor performance, the workstations must not have SharePoint installed on them. Click on the Add button. The station you specified will populate in the Stations field. Adding station If you wish to add another station, repeat previous two steps. Deleting station If you wish to delete a station, select the station in the Stations field and click on the Delete button. Click on the Apply button to confirm the table of stations. If you have setup the stations successfully, you will be prompted with an OK pop-up. Setting the trigger interval and the percentage for each action In the SP Usage Simulator tab, you can set the trigger interval and the percentage for each action. The trigger interval will start each action, while the percentages displayed will assign the frequency of performing: Site access Page 4

5 List access List creation Document Creation Enter the values as desired. *Note: The percentages entered here must add up to 100%. Click on the Apply button, and then you can close this window. Stations view It will pop up the SP Usage Simulator window. The stations you set are displayed in the right pane of the window. Site or site collection view Page 5

6 You can see the Target icon in the left pane. Double click on this icon and expand the tree to the site or site collection you wish to generate activity on. Progress view Click on the Start button. You will see the specified site URL in the top bar. The progress will be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Click on the Stop button when you wish to stop this test. It will continue to run until you cancel it. Job report view Click on the Job Report button to view the job report. Page 6

7 If you wish to repeat this test with different configurations, you may view or edit the configurations by clicking on the Configure button. Page 7
