What is Hoopla? Hoopla is a digital streaming media service available through libraries. Hoopla offers a large selection of movies, television shows, music, eaudiobooks, ebooks, and digital comic books (graphic novels). There are no holds in Hoopla all items are available to you at all times, even if someone else is already borrowing it! Getting Started To borrow items from Hoopla to read or watch on your computer you must create a Hoopla account and log in to the Hoopla website. Create a Hoopla Account Using the Internet browser on your computer, visit the Hoopla website at hoopladigital.com. You can also access this website by visiting the Whitby Public Library website and clicking on Digital Content and then ebooks and eaudiobooks, Music, or Movies and Television. On the Hoopla website, click Get Started Today in the middle of the screen to begin creating your Hoopla account. Once you have created your account you can log in by entering your email address and password in the top right corner of the screen. May 2018 2
Enter your email address and create a password as prompted and then click Next. Next, you will be asked to select your library system. Click Whitby Public Library. If the Whitby Public Library does not appear in the list, you can search for it using the search bar at the top of the window. Click Next. May 2018 3
You can choose to receive emails and notifications from Hoopla regarding content, features, and the Hoopla service. You do not need to agree to these statements to continue. A checkmark in the box means that you agree to that statement. To remove the checkmark and disagree, click each box. Click Next to continue. Enter your Whitby Public Library card number and PIN (the last 4 digits of your phone number). You must agree to the statement on this page regarding Hoopla use and storage of your information to continue. Click in the box to agree and then click Next. To sign up for Hoopla, you must agree to Hoopla s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. To read either of these documents, click the link. If you accept, click Sign Me Up. You are now ready to use Hoopla! Click Done to continue. May 2018 4
Get Books, Music, Movies and TV Shows Browse by Media Type At the top of the page, click Browse and then select the type of media you wish to borrow. Within each media type you can sort titles by Recommended, Featured, Popular or Categories. Browse by Category Within Media Type The Categories heading allows you to browse by genre within each media type. Click Categories and then select the category you wish to browse by clicking on it. Search for a Specific Title or Author Click the search bar at the top of the page to search for a specific title, author/artist, or series. This searches all media types by default, but you can also choose to search within a media type by clicking Everything a selecting a media type from the list that appears. Borrow an Item Once you have found an item you would like to borrow, click the cover image to see a description of that item. For music albums, this will include a track list. To borrow the item, click Borrow. May 2018 6
My Hoopla Click My Hoopla at the top left of the page to see all the items that you currently have checked out. You can also view these items by clicking My Hoopla and selecting Borrowed from the menu that appears. You remaining number of monthly checkouts is displayed in a red circle in the top left corner of the screen. To read, watch or listen to the item that you just checked out, click the cover image of the item and then click Read (or Watch or Listen, depending on the type of media you have borrowed). It is not possible to download borrowed items to your computer. To download an item for offline use you must use the Hoopla app on a smartphone or tablet. May 2018 7
Favourites Using Favourites is a way to save titles you are interested in borrowing later or maybe titles you enjoyed so much you want to remember them for later! To add a tile to your Favouries, click the cover image of the item and then click the heart icon. The heart icon will become solid pink when the item is marked as a Favourite. To remove the item from your Favourites, click the heart icon again. You can find your favourite items by clicking My Hoopla and selecting Favourites from the menu that appears. May 2018 8
Returning an Item All titles borrowed with Hoopla will return automatically at the end of the borrowing period. If you wish, you can choose to return a title early. To do so, go to My Hoopla and tap the cover image of the item you want to return early. Scroll down past the description of the book and you will see the option to Return Now. Click Return Now to return the title to the Library early. This will also move the item to the History page of My Hoopla. May 2018 9
Settings To view or edit your Hoopla settings, click Settings in the top right corner of the screen. In the settings menu you can do things like change your password, hide your borrowing history, update your library card number or PIN and enable/disable Kids Mode. Kids Mode is a discovery tool that filters content in all media types to only family friendly content. All content in Kids Mode is considered suitable for children up to 12 years of age. May 2018 10
Recommendation Settings In the settings menu you can also change your recommendation settings. These settings control what titles or genres Hoopla recommends to you. Click Select to edit your recommendation settings. Within each media type, click the genres that you are interested in. Hoopla will tailor its recommendations to you based on these settings. Click Done to finish adding your preferred genres. May 2018 11
Lending Policies Checkouts You may check out up to 8 titles per month. The lending period depends on the media type: Movies and television episodes: 72 hours (3 days) from the time you borrow the title Music albums: 7 days from the time you borrow the title ebooks, eaudiobook and digital comics: 21 days from the time you borrow the title The monthly borrow limit resets on the first day of each month. Previous borrowed items will remain until the end of their lending period. Returns and Renewals All titles will automatically return at the end of the lending period. Titles can be returned early, but note that returning a title early does not mean that you can check out another item in its place. The borrowing limit is a monthly total, not a limit for maximum titles checked out at one time. Titles cannot be renewed. If you would like to borrow a title again after it returns to the Library, simply check out the item again. Holds All Hoopla items are available to you at all times, even if someone else is already borrowing it. No hold needed! New Library Cards If you are issued a new library card, navigate to the Hoopla settings menu and enter your new card number and PIN. Any titles that you are currently borrowing, as well as any titles in your History and Favourites will automatically be transferred to your new card. May 2018 12
