1 HOW TO DOWNLOAD ELECTRONIC BOOKS ONTO YOUR E-BOOK READER From the Peoria Public Library homepage Click on Digital Downloads, listed on the top of the screen. Click on Greater Phoenix Digital Library. In the top right corner of the window, click on Sign-In. From the drop-down list, choose Peoria Public Library. Enter your library card number and Pin number. Click Sign-In. If you want to browse our collection, click on the type of material you are looking for from the choices on the screen. If you want to search for books by title or by particular author or subject, click in the white Search box in the top right hand corner of the screen. Type in the name of the author, title of the book or subject which you are looking for. On the left side of the screen in the grey area, you can filter your search. Choices for your filtered search are the Type of material and the Format it is available in. Options to search by Subject, Publisher, Language, Grade Level, Rating and Device are available as you scroll towards the bottom of the page. For anything other than Kindle books, you will click on Epub ebook or PDF ebook. Also note the option to search for books that are Available Now. This option is listed underneath the white Search box. Click on Advanced Search in the top right hand corner of the screen if you would like to add additional Search information.

3 When you find a book you want to check out click on the cover item you wish to check out. Now click on Borrow or Place a Hold if no copies are available to check out. Be sure to check the format to be sure it will play on your electronic reader by clicking on the title of the book instead of the cover and going in to the record of the book. Then look in the right hand corner of the page to see what formats the book is available in. Kindle books will only open in Kindle devices. EPUB and PDF books will only open in e-readers other than Kindles.

4 INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING KINDLE BOOKS TO YOUR KINDLE E- BOOK READER OR FIRE, CLOUD READER, OR APP From your Bookshelf Click on Download Then click on Kindle Book Then Click on Confirm & Download This will take you to the Amazon website. Log in to your Amazon account. Click on Get Library Book. This will check the book out to you for free. Sync your Kindle e-book reader, cloud reader, or app to the Internet. The e-book will be wirelessly transferred to your Kindle.

6 Transferring Kindle Files Via USB Both Macintosh and Windows users can download and transfer Kindle content from a computer to a Kindle device through a USB cable. When your Kindle device is plugged into your computer, it will appear as a removable mass-storage device. Downloading Kindle content to your computer The first step in transferring Kindle content is to download the file you wish to transfer onto your computer. If you have already purchased the book, magazine or newspaper, you will need to visit the Manage Your Content and Devices page and locate the item in the "Your Content" tab. Click on the Actions button beside the title and select "Download & transfer via USB." Select the Kindle device you will transfer the file to and click the "Download" button. If you have not yet purchased the book or subscription content that you want to transfer, choose "Transfer via Computer" when purchasing the content, then click "Buy now with 1-Click". Description: Select Download via USB while purchasing If you have more than one Kindle device registered to the account, you will see a pop-up window asking you to choose a device. If you do not select the correct Kindle device, you will be unable to open the content on that device. You may be prompted to open or save the file; choose "Save" and select a location that is easy to find again, such as the desktop. Once the file has been saved, connect your Kindle device to your computer using a USB cable.

7 Connecting your Kindle device to your computer: Plug the larger end of a USB cable into an available USB port or a powered USB hub connected to your computer. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the micro-usb port on the bottom of your Kindle device. When connected to your computer, your Kindle device will go into USB drive mode and its battery will be recharged by the computer. Your wireless service is temporarily shut off and you will not receive any of your subscriptions while in this mode. Also, your Kindle device is not usable as a reading device while you are in USB drive mode, but will return right to where you were when you eject the Kindle device from your computer. Transferring Kindle content Once connected to a computer using a USB cable, your Kindle device will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop. Open the Kindle drive. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named "documents." This is the folder you will move the downloaded file into. Locate the downloaded file and copy it into the documents folder. You can generally copy files by clicking and dragging the file to the folder. Safely eject your Kindle device from your computer and unplug the USB cable. Your content will appear on the Home screen.

8 INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING EPUB OR PDF BOOKS TO YOUR PC, MAC, OR NOOK OR OTHER READER From your Bookshelf Click on Download Then Click on EPUB or PDF Then Click on Confirm & Download Save the file to your computer. You will need to have Adobe Digital Editions software installed on your computer. Go to Click on Downloads at top of screen. Click on the large button in the center of the page that says Install. Once Adobe Digital Editions is installed on your computer, create an Adobe account. Click on Get an Adobe ID online. Follow instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID. Return to the Activation screen. Enter the address and password for your Adobe acccount. Open Adobe Digital Editions. The Setup Assistant dialog box appears. Click Continue. The Activation screen is displayed. Under Authorize Computer, enter the address and password for your Adobe ID. Now click on Activate. Click Finish to close the Setup Assistant window.

9 Open the file in Adobe Digital Editions. You can read your book on your PC or MAC or transfer the book using the instructions below. Connect your Nook or other e-reader to your computer with the USB cord. Follow the prompts to authorize your Nook or other e-reader. To transfer the file to your Nook or other e-reader Drag the picture of the cover of the book that appears in the Adobe Digital Editions Library window to the icon named NOOK or the name of you e-reader under your Bookshelves. Now read and enjoy!

10 INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING EPUB, PDF, OR MP3 BOOKS TO YOUR APPLE, WINDOWS, or ANDROID DEVICE (phone or tablet), or KINDLE FIRE OR NOOK TABLET You will need to have the Overdrive app installed on your device. Go to the Apple Apps Store, Windows Store, Amazon App Store, Google Play Store, Chrome Web Store or Nook App Store and install the Overdrive App. If you don t have an Adobe ID open the OverDrive app and follow the prompts to create an OverDrive account and log in. If you're under 13, select I am under 13 years old instead. If you have an Adobe ID Go to the app settings and find the authorize section. Enter the address and password for your new Adobe account Click on Authorize. You will only need to setup this software once and it will remember your information.

11 To Find a book in the Greater Phoenix Digital Library Use the Get Books or Library option in the app or go to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library s website. Browse or search for a Title. When you find a book you want check it out. Then go to your Bookshelf. From your Bookshelf Click on Download Then Click on EPUB or PDF Then Click on Confirm & Download Then Click on Download (MP3 audiobook) The book will be transferred to the Overdrive Media Console. Then go to the Bookshelf in the Overdrive Media Console. Now read or listen and enjoy!

12 You may also read your e-books online in your browser instead of in the app or software. Especially recommended for Linux. From the Bookshelf window click on Read (In your browser) and read the book online. Click on Download then bookmark that page to read the book offline You can also change the font size etc. from the menu on the right hand side as well.

13 Click on the menu button in the upper left hand corner of the app to bring up the menu.

14 MY LIBRARIES Click on Phoenix Public Library to go to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library s website to check out a book. You can have more than one library there if you have a library card from a library in a different state. To add a library to MY LIBRARIES Click on Add a library Put in to the Search box

15 Click on Peoria Public Library System Click on the star next to Greater Phoenix Digital Library to turn it gold. This adds it to MY LIBRARIES.

16 Bookshelf Has all of the books and movies you have downloaded from the Greater Phoenix Digital Library. Click on cover of book to start reading a new book.

17 Overdrive One Click on Overdrive One. Get an account for free by clicking on the Get an Overdrive One Account button. Then sign in to your account by clicking on Sign In. Overdrive one allows you to share libraries, bookmarks, and last page read between multiple devices if you sign in to your account on those devices.

19 Put in your Adobe ID. You must sign up for one for free if you haven t done so already.

20 Files Lists all of the files in the Overdrive Media Console History - History of all of the books you have checked out. You can delete and share titles from this.

21 Help - Help topics for the Overdrive Media Console. Now Reading / Playing takes you back to the place you left off in the current book you are reading.

22 On an Ios device Click on the menu in the upper left hand corner to return to your bookshelf or to borrow another book. Click on the Aa to change the font size etc. Click on the Sun button to change the brightness of the screen Skip ahead in the book by clicking on the menu at the upper right hand corner and then choosing the chapter

23 On an android device you can change the font size etc by clicking on Reader Settings and then change the setting you wish. Skip ahead in the book by clicking on the menu at the upper right hand corner and then choosing the chapter Click on the menu in the upper left hand corner to return to your bookshelf or to borrow another book.

24 On IOS devices you can change the Audio book speed with the sliding lever. At the top of the Android app there are 4 buttons on the menu. These are for settings etc that do the same things as the menu on the left side. These are at the bottom of the IOS devices as well. You can get a list of all of the chapters in both apps here as well.

25 Click on the Overdrive app to open it. Click on find a library to find a library or click on Phoenix Public Library to go to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library s website.

26 Put in the search box. Select Peoria Public Library System from the list. Click on Greater Phoenix Digital Library to start looking for books.

27 Click on the book under My Collection you wish to read and start reading. Swipe from right to left at the right side of the screen to get to the settings.

28 Accounts Put in your Adobe id and passoword. Get books Takes you to the Phoenix Digital Library s website.

29 You can also install the classic desktop version of OverDrive's software for Windows, which will allow you to download WMA audiobooks/music and WMV video, and burn and transfer files (as permitted).

30 Click on Options to change the font size etc. Click on Add bookmark to to add a bookmark Click on More to go ahead by chapters.

31 Click on the overdrive icon and open the Overdrive app. Click on Phoenix Public Library to go to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library s website to check out books. Or click on Bookshelf and read the books you ve checked out. Tap on the cover of the book you wish to read.

32 You can read ebooks or listen to audio books in the overdrive app. You can change the font size etc by clicking on Reader Settings and then change the setting you wish. 33 How to renew digital titles Your library may offer a renew feature which allows you to place advance holds on titles that you currently have checked out. Renewing puts you in line to borrow a title again once your first checkout expires. The option to renew a title becomes available three days before the title is set to expire, appearing next to the title on your Bookshelf under your library Account. You can only use the renew feature once for each checkout. How to renew 1. Log into your library's digital collection website and navigate to your Account. 2. On your library Bookshelf, select the Renew icon next to the title you'd like to renew. Note: This option does not appear until three days before the title is supposed to expire. If there are no existing holds on a title, the Renew icon will be green, like in the example below. In this case, you can and then borrow the title again immediately once your first checkout expires.

34 If there are existing holds on a title, the Renew icon will be grayed out, like in the example below. In this case, you can still use the renew feature to reserve a spot on the title's wait list so that you can borrow it again as soon as it's available. 3. Enter and confirm your address in the renewal form that opens, then click the Renew button.

35 Once you renew a title, its Renew icon on your library Bookshelf will have a checkmark next to it. You can also track which titles you've renewed from your Holds page. As soon as your first checkout expires and the title is available for you to borrow again, you will receive an notification. Click the link in that or follow the instructions to borrow the title a second time.

36 How to place a hold Sometimes a title may be unavailable because it is checked out by another user. If so, you may place a hold and receive an when it becomes available. Unavailable titles have greyed-out format icons in the top-right corner of each cover image. You can place a hold on an unavailable title to be added to the waiting list. 1.Click on a title to open its details page, then click Place a Hold. if prompted, sign in with your information.

37 2.Enter your address and click Place a Hold. Keep Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available if you want to have the book automatically checked out to you when it s ready. Your hold will be under the holds section of your account. You can Remove your hold to cancel it or Edit your if you wish to change your address.

38 If you need to change your address go to Holds then click on Options then Edit address and change your address. If you need to cancel your hold click on Remove Hold. If you want to enable or disable the Auto checkout option for your hold click on Auto checkout. If you go on vacation and will not have Internet access you can click on Suspend hold. Then choose how many days you would like to suspend your hold then click Submit.

39 How to check out a title on hold that has become available When a title you put on hold from your library's digital collection becomes available for you to check out, you will get a notification . You have 48 hours from the time the was sent to pick it up or it goes to the next person on the list and disappears from your account. To borrow the title, follow these steps: 1.Follow the link from your to get to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library's website. Or, you can go directly to the library's website and find your holds list on your account page. 2. Click the Borrow button to check out the title. Note: If you have already borrowed the maximum number of titles from your library, you will be unable to retrieve your hold until you return a title or a lending period expires. It will automatically be in your bookshelf if you kept Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available

40 TO RETURN A BOOK IN THE OVERDRIVE APP While you are in the bookshelf old down the cover of a book to get a menu with , Delete, Return, Share options. Delete Deletes the book from the device Return Returns the book to the library before the two weeks is up. Share Shares the book to Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, or by

41 For the Windows 8 app Right click on one of the books. Then click on Return/Delete to return the book early.

42 TO RETURN A BOOK IN ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS 1. Open Adobe Digital Editions. 2. Select Library from the upper-left corner if you don't already see the view below. 3. Right-click (control-click for Mac) on the title you'd like to return. Click Return Borrowed Item. 3. A dialog box will appear asking if you're sure you want to return the ebook. Click Return to confirm.

43 TO RETURN A KINDLE BOOK EARLY Click on Manage Your Content and Devices Click on the Actions button next to the book that you want to return early. Click on Return this book.

44 How to share titles on social media using the OverDrive app while reading a book. The OverDrive app allows you to share titles you're enjoying through social networks and . For Android (4.0+) devices From the app bookshelf, open a title you'd like to share. Tap Share icon (Share icon) in the top-right corner of the app. Note: When sharing an ebook, tap the center of the screen to bring up the reader options, where you'll find the Share icon. If you're using a legacy version of our app, you'll find the Share button on the Details page (which you can access using the Menu button). Choose how you'd like to share. You can share titles through Facebook, Goodreads, , or the "Share via..." option. Note: Use the Share via... option if you'd like to share a title using other social media applications on your device. Follow the on-screen instructions to share (if prompted). For ios devices From the app bookshelf, open a title you'd like to share. Tap the share icon in ios (Share button) in the bottom-right corner of the app. Note: When sharing an ebook, tap the center of the screen to bring up the reader options, where you'll find the Share icon. If you're using a legacy version of our app, you'll find the Share button on the Details screen (which you can access from the Menu). Choose how you'd like to share. You can share titles through Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, or . Follow the on-screen instructions to share (if prompted).

45 You can stream videos from Overdrive as well. Check out a video then go to your Bookshelf If you have an Apple or Android Device Click on add to app To play the video in a browser Click on Play (Streaming Video) Then go to your bookshelf in the app and click on the Video. The Video will start playing automatically. The video will start to play in the app
