Preface This documentation describes the PC configuration before you can access the school network or join the PC to YPHS domain. It will greatly help you if/when you have system problems or go to upgrade your machine. You'll want to perform this procedure after building or buying a new system, or performing significant upgrades. This documentation will be updated from time to time. Network Configuration (Manual Configuration) Before you can access the YPHS network, you must make sure you've go though the following steps for manual configuration, otherwise please follow the DHCP configuration on the next section. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, and click on Network Connections. Something like following screen. 2) After that, you should see the Local Area Connection. Right click and select Properties as shown below. 1

3) Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button. 4) The Configuration presents you the following windows. Choose Use the following IP address and Use the following DNS Server address. Follow the below configuration: 2

IP address : 192.168. Subnet mask : 255.255. Default gateway: 192.168. Preferred DNS server: 192.168. Alternate DNS server: 192.168. 5) Once key in the details above, click on the Advanced button and select the DNS tab. 6) Choose or select Append these DNS suffixes (in order), then click the Add button below it as in the diagram below. 7) Key in yphs.edu.my and click Add button. 3

8) Then at the DNS suffixes for this connection text box kindly key in also yphs.edu.my. Finally, tick the check box for Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration as shown as below windows. 9) After that, select on the WINS tab and click the Add button 4

10) Key in the WINS server IP address as 192.168.88.253 and click the Add button. 11) Finally click OK button through all the windows to save the setting and exit. 5

Table For Manual IP Address Configuration Below is the tip for manual configuration of the IP address otherwise the user must use DHCP. Not Applicable Not Applicable * DHCP = The DHCP server will assign the range of IP address to computer with DHCP setting (Please follow DHCP configuration manual on next page) Below are the current universal settings that applicable for yphs networks which includes the Subnet Mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS and WINS server. Network Configuration (DHCP Configuration) If you are not using the manual configuration to join the YPHS network, you must make sure you've go though the following DHCP configuration steps. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, and click on Network Connections. Something like following screen. 2) After that, you should see the Local Area Connection. Right click and select Properties as shown below. 7

3) Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button. 4) Then please select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically and click OK button to save the changes and exit. Tips: After connected to the YPHS network, you can check your network status. The system will assign an IP to your PC. Check whether the IP address reads 192.168.X.X. If so, it is a valid address. Click on Start button and point your cursor to Settings, Network Connections and Local Area Connection. Right click on Local Area Connection and click on Status. 8

Domain Joining Procedure Note: Home Edition is not designed to join domains; only workgroups. Only use XP Professional version to join the domain Steps: 1) Right click My Computer and Click on Properties 2) On the Computer Name tab, click Change button. 9

3)Select Member of - Domain and then key in YPHS after that click OK button. 4) Enter the username and password of a user that has the rights to create computer accounts in the domain (root). If all went ok you'll get a welcome message. 10

5) A reboot will be necessary to complete this process. Click OK on the below diagram. 6) Click Yes on the windows prompt to restart the machine. Important: Please remember to unjoin from YPHS domain before doing any cloning. If not, the cloned machine will not be able to join because pc name and IP are conflict. 11

Domain Based Logon All the Windows Clients is domain based logon, you have to login your username and password. 1) The monitor screen present you with the following type of page after the PC is powered on. Then, you need to enter your username (i.e. teacher) in the Username and password Note: Make sure you are "Log on to: YPHS" 2) You should see your Home Directory and Public Network Drives under My Computer. Important: Don't save many or unnecessary files under My Documents or Desktop because it is stored in the server with a qutoa based allocation. 12

Diabling the Ctrl+Alt+Delete logon In order to disable the secure logon or the windows requiring user to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete before logging on, you must make sure you've go though the following steps. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, go to Control Panel. 2) Double click the Users Accounts. Then the below windows will appear. 13

3) Select the Advanced and at the Secure Logon part, please untick the check box Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. 4) Finally click OK button to save the changes and exit. 14

File Server File Server is a place for you to store your personal data or share your data with others user. The following steps show you how to access the File Server. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, and then click on Run. 2) Key in \\server in the Open: field and click OK. 3)If your access is granted, you will get the below window. Otherwise a login screen will be prompted for your username and password, kindly key in the required field and click ok. 15

Tuning Windows XP & Group Policy Each windows XP pc will have to configure to run the default YPHS regisrty setting and enforce the default YPHS group policy. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, and then click on Run. 2) Key in \\server in the Open: field and click ok. 3)If your access is granted, you will get the below window. Otherwise a login screen will be prompted for your username and password, kindly key in the required field and click ok. Then double click the Installers. 16

4)Then double click the Tune Windows XP folder. 5) Double click the WinXP as shown below and a message prompt for confirmation to add the information to the registry, kindly click Yes. 17

4) A message will be prompted for successfully entered into the registry, kindly click OK button. 5) In the same windows shown above, right click at the GroupPolicy folder and select Copy. 6) Paste it in the directory C:\WINDOWS\System32 as shown below 7) Restart the machine to apply the Group policy. 18

Disabling Offline Files Configuration In order to disable the Offline files configuration at the computer, please follow the below procedure. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, go to Control Panel. 2) Double click the Folder Options icon as below windows. 19

3) Once the below windows appear select the Offline Files tab. 4) Then untick the Enable Offline Files option as below diagram and click OK to save and exit. 20

Configuring Firewall to Allow Printing Notification In order to enable the print quota notification at the computer, please follow the below configuration to set the exception at the firewall setting. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, go to Control Panel. 2) Double click the Windows Firewall icon as below diagram. 21

3) Once the below window appears then select the Exceptions tab. 4) After that, tick at the check box for File and Printer Sharing and click the Edit button as shown below. 22

5) Highlight the first port and click the Change scope button. 6) Once the below windows appear select the option Custom list and key in the IP address for the file server as 192.168.88.253 as shown as below diagram. Click OK to save changes and exit. 7) Repeat steps no 5. and 6. for the rest of the port TCP445, UDP 137 and UDP138. 23

8)Once finish customize the port setting you should get the below screen where the Scope column will all change to custom. 9) Finally click OK button to save the changes and exit. 24

Configuring Messenger to Allow Printing Notification In order to enable messenger for the print quota notification at the computer, please follow the below configuration to set messenger services. Steps: 1) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, go to Control Panel. 2) Double click the Administrative Tools as below windows. 25

3) Then double click at the Services icon as shown below. 4) Then look for Messenger in the list and double click the Messenger as below windows. 26

5) Once the Messenger properties windows appear, kindly select the Automatic under the Startup type drop list as shown below. Then click on the Apply button. 6) Finally, click on the Start button to start the service. 27

7) Kindly ensure the Service status is Started and click OK button to save the changes and exit. 8) The below show an example of notification from Messenger when a user try to print but the quota was reached and administrator will also be alert through email notification. 9) If the above situation happens, please be reminded that any printing request will not be printed until the quota has been top up. 28

Mozilla Thunderbird as Email Client Thunderbird is a popular Open Source email client software. The current version is 2 and it is very stable and easy to use. The greatest advantage of using Thunderbird is that it is making your PC secure from virus and spyware as it is very caution about email security. Thunderbird can be downloaded freely from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ The following configuration example will be using this example account: Email Address: Name: IMAP Server: SMTP Server: me@yphs.edu.my Me Myname mail.yphs.edu.my mail.yphs.edu.my Configuration for POP3 and SMTP POP3 and SMTP is the normal configuration. We must be able to configure that. 1. Start Thunderbird. 2. Tools -> Account Settings 3. Click New Account. 4. Specify Email Account. 5. Enter your name: Me Myname 6. Enter Email Address: me@yphs.edu.my 7. Type of Server: POP 8. Incoming Server: mail.yphs.edu.my 9. Incoming User Name: me 10. Account Name: me@yphs.edu.my 11. Done. 29

Configuration for LDAP Address Book The LDAP Address Book is served as Global Address Book. It is just your extra address book to query your organizational user list. 1. Tools -> Address Book. The Address Book screen is appeared. 2. File -> New -> LDAP Directory... 3. Enter Name with anything you like. Try Example LDAP. 4. Enter Hostname as server1.yphs.edu.my. 5. Enter Base DN as ou=student,dc=yphs,dc=edu,dc=my. 6. Port number is default 389. 7. Bind DN can be left blank. 8. Done. To test the address book, highlight the newly created Example LDAP in the list, on the top right hand corner field (Name or Email), type @. This should query and list down all addresses that contain @ which mean everyone (because all email address contain @ character). 30
