INTRODUCTION Welcome to Emerge 3.0. This guide will help you get started using the system on your institution s learning management system (LMS). SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 1.1 OPERATING SYSTEMS AND BROWSERS 1.1.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Cengage Learning recommends using Firefox 3.6 or 4.0 if you are using Emerge on the Cengage Learning Management System (CLMS), however the following combinations of PC operating systems and web browser applications are supported: OPERATING SYSTEM SUPPORTED & COMPATIBLE BROWSERS Windows XP SP3 Internet Explorer 7.x and 8.x; Firefox 3.0x, 3.6x and 4.x; Windows Vista, SP1 Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x and 9.x; Firefox 3.Ox, 3.6x and 4.x Windows 7 Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x and 9.x; Firefox 3.0x. 3.6x and 4.x Mac OS 10.5 Firefox 3.0, 3.6, and 4.0 Mac OS 10.6 Firefox 3.0, 3.6, and 4.0 The following operating systems have not been tested for support: Versions of Windows prior to XP SP3 Mac OS 10.7 Any version of Linux The following browsers have not been tested for support: Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows Safari for Windows or Mac OS X 33

Firefox 5.x for Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux Chrome for Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux 1.2 BROWSER SETTINGS Whatever browser you choose to use with Emerge, it should be set-up in the following manner: Pop-Up Blocking must be disabled Cookies must be enabled JavaScript must be enabled Java must be installed and enabled Please refer to your browsers online help or user document for further information. 1.3 ADDITIONAL NECESSARY SOFTWARE The following software is required to use Emerge: Adobe Reader is required to view Help and Concepts and Issues Projects Adobe Flash is required to play YouTube and Skills Videos. Microsoft Office 2010 is required for Skills Projects. 1.1 MONITORS At least a 12 inch monitor and a resolution of 1024x768 is recommended for optimum viewing of Emerge. A smaller monitor and/or lesser resolution may require unusual scrolling horizontal and vertical scrolling in order to view all the content on a page. 44

STEP 1 DETERMINE WHICH VERSION OF EMERGE YOU NEED Three versions of Emerge are available: Emerge with Computers Emerge with Computer Concepts Emerge with IC3 Computer Literacy Your instructor will tell you which version you require for the course and provide you with the appropriate ISBNs. STEP 2 GET YOUR EMERGE WITH COM PUTERS ACCESS CODE There are two ways to get your Emerge with Computers PIN code. You can buy it at your school s bookstore. You will receive a card that looks like the following: You can also get an access code online from Cengage Brain. 55

1. Go to http://www.cengagebrain.com. First, login to Cengage Brain If you do not have a login, click here to register. 2. Login using your Cengage Brain Username and Password. If you do not yet have a Cengage Brain account, click the Register button and sign up. 3. Search for the appropruiate Emerge ISBN. Ask your instructor which one you need for the course. 66

4. Click the Add to Cart button. The item will be added to your cart. 5. Click the See My Cart button. 77

6. Click the Checkout button. 7. Click the Checkout button. If you have not already registered and logged in, you will be prompted to do so. Otherwise, you ll see the Review and Pay window. 88

8. Enter the requested payment information and then click on the Finish Purchase button. You will see a confirmation. 9. Click the Open button to see your PIN code. You will need this to access Emerge. Your PIN Code 10. Copy your PIN code. You are now ready to access Emerge with Computers. 99

STEP 3 ACESSING EMERGE WITH COMPUTERS ON YOUR LMS Once you have your Access/PIN code, you are ready to begin using it. 1. Make sure pop-up windows are enabled on your web browser. 2. Log into your school s learning management system. 3. Navigate to Emerge. Your instructor will tell you where it is located. 4. Under Course Resources, click on the Emerge product. The first time you do, you will be prompted for the Access/PIN code you just purchased from your school s bookstore or Cengage Brain. 5. Enter or paste your PIN code and click the Submit button. The Emerge home page will display. 1010

6. You are now ready to use Emerge. Click the question mark (?) button on the upper right hand side of the screen for further instructions. 1111

Appendix A How to Use Emerge Course Content 1 NAVIGATING CONTENT 1.1 CONTENTS PANEL Contents Panel The Contents Panel on the left side of the page is the primary means of navigating within the Emerge content. The Contents Panel consists of two tabs: A-1

The Content Tab lets you browse through the Emerge table of contents, browse using a custom table of contents, view your bookmarked content, and content for which you have entered notes. The Search Tab lets you search for content items by specific keywords. 1.2 SELECTING A TABLE OF CONTENTS The Content Tab control bar lets you select which table of contents you are viewing. The control opens either Emerge s standard tables of contents or your custom table of contents, depending on which is active at the time. The control closes either Emerge s standard table of contents or your custom table of contents, depending on which is active at the time. The selects Emerge s standard table of contents. The selects your custom table of contents. The control displays the contents which you have bookmarked. The control displays the contents for which you have entered notes. The control lets you select and deselect which Emerge categories you want in your custom table of contents. A-2

1.3 BROWSING A TABLE OF CONTENTS To browse an Emerge table of contents, click on the icon to the left of each heading to expand it and see its content. Clicking on the to collapse it. You can also click on Expand All to view all headings and Collapse All to close them. When you have found a heading that interests you, click on its heading to view the content. The content will appear in the frame to the right. 1.4 CUSTOMIZING A TABLE OF CONTENTS To create a custom table of contents, click on the icon on the Content Tab controls. Click on the + icon to expand each heading. Click on the icon to collapse it. You can also click on the Expand All button to view all headings and the Collapse All button to close all of them. To select a heading for the customized table of contents click on the checkbox to the left of the heading. To select all categories, click on the Select All button. To restore the standard table of contents click on the Default TOC button. To activate your custom table of contents, click the Save button. If you do not wish to save the custom table of contents, click on the icon again. A-3

1.5 SEARCHING FOR CONTENT The Search Tab lets you search for Emerge contents by key words. Click on the Search Tab to view it. Enter one or more words in the search field and click on the Search button. A list of up to 200 content items matching one or more of the words you entered will display. Click on an item to view it. The words you searched on will be highlighted in yellow. Note: You must at least four alphanumeric characters to in order to search. You cannot search using special characters such as *, ^, $. 1.6 OTHER NAVIGATION TOOLS: 1.6.1 NEXT AND PREVIOUS BUTTONS The control bar above the content frame enables you to move to the next and previous content items in the active table of contents or search results list. Click on the Next button to view the next content item. If there are no further content items, the button will be dimmed. Click on the Prev button to view the previous content item. If there are no previous items, the button will be A-4

dimmed. Prev and Next buttons also display at the bottom right hand corner of the page. 1.6.2 BREADCRUMBS As you browse through a table of contents or search results, a bread crumb trail of headings is displayed in the upper left of the content frame. You can click on any heading within the bread crumb trail to view its content. 1.6.3 EMERGE LOGO If you want to return to the Emerge s Home page, click on the logo in the upper right corner of the browser window A-5

2 WORKING WITH CONTENT 2.1 THE CONTROL BAR In addition to navigation, the control bar lets you change the font size, bookmark a page, print a page, and display help. Click on one of the icons to decrease or increase the font size. The center icon is the default font size. Click the icon to bookmark the current page. To view a list of all bookmarked pages, click the in the Content Tab. Click the icon to print the current page. You will see your PC s standard print dialog box. Keep in mind, this does not include any notes you might have entered. See Notes below for further information. Click the icon to display online help. Note that your computer must have the Adobe Reader in order to display the help. 2.2 NOTES The Notes field lets you enter annotate the current Emerge page. The Notes field is open by default. To annotate a page, type in whatever additional information you needs. Click the Close button to collapse Notes. Click the Open button to expand Notes. Click the Print button to print the current page plus the notes you have entered. You will see your PC s standard print dialog box. A-6

Click the Save button to save your Notes. To view your notes, either navigate to the page or click the icon in the Content Tab to display a list of all annotated pages. A-7

3 VIEWING GENERAL CONTENT Each Emerge Concepts and Issues section provides the following information: A definition of the topic A discussion of why this topic matters Essential information about the topic A list of sub-topics Topic Definition Why This Matters Essential Information Sub-Topics A-8

In addition, an Emerge Concept or Issue can include the following content: Learning Objectives Images News Feeds YouTube Videos Self-Quiz Projects 3.1 SHOWING LEARNING OBJECTIVES Click on the button to display a high-level summary of what you will learn in that section.. Drag the lower right hand corner to increase or decrease the size of the window. Click the Print button to print a copy of the Learning Objective. Click the Close button or X icon to close the window. 3.2 ENLARGING IMAGES If the content has an image associated with it, click on the image to enlarge it. Click on the close link or press the Esc button to return to the content. A-9

3.3 READING NEWS FEEDS Many Emerge sections have RSS-driven news feeds showing you the latest information for the topic in questions. The news feed is updated every 20 seconds. To read a news article, click on the link. The article will open in a separate browser window or tab. News 3.4 PLAYING YOUTUBE VIDEOS If a section has a YouTube Video associated with it, you can control it using the following: Click on the icon to play or restart a movie. Click on the to pause the move. Click on the icon to increase or decrease the volume. Click on the icon to view the video in full screen mode. Drag the slider to select a particular time sequence in the movie. Click on the video while it is playing to see the movie within the YouTube site. A-10

3.5 TAKING A SELF-QUIZ Click on the button to test yourself on the current Emerge topic. The Quiz Yourself window will display. Drag the icon in the lower right corner to resize the window. Drag the scroll bar to move through the quiz. Complete each question by click the appropriate radio buttons or check boxes. Click the Submit button when you are done. A window will display asking Are you sure you want to submit your quiz? All unanswered questions will be marked incorrect. Click the OK button to continue or Cancel to return to the quiz. If you clicked OK, you will see the questions you got wrong or right. Click the Print button to print a copy of the Learning Objective. Click the Close button or X icon to close the window. A-11

3.6 DOWNLOADING A CONCEPTS OR ISSUES PROJECT Click the button to start a Concepts or Issues Project. A PDF file with instructions will open in a separate browser window or tab. Note: Your PC requires Adobe Reader and a suitable browser plug-in to complete Concepts or Issues Projects. A-12

4 VIEWING SKILLS-RELATED CONTENT Each Emerge Skill is divided into a series of lessons. These lessons include an Overview stating the goals of the lesson Instructions on how to complete the lesson, and a list of Lesson Topics. Note: This section is only available if you users are using Emerge with Computers V3.0. This section is not available via Emerge with Computer Concepts V3.0. 4.1 PLAYING SKILLS VIDEOS If a section has a Skills Video associated with it, you can do the following: Click the Launch Video Lesson icon to view the video. Click the View Video Script link to view a written transcript of the video. When the video displays, you can control it using the following: Click the icon to start the video. Click the to turn closed captions on and off. Click the icon to start or re-start the video. Click the icon to pause the video. Using the slider to move to a specific time in the video. Use the control it increase or decrease the volume. 4.2 TAKE A SKILLS SELF QUIZ See Appendix A, section 3.5. Taking a Self-Quiz for instructions. A-14

4.3 VIEWING HELP Lessons can include links to additional information from a vendor such as Microsoft or Apple. Click on the link to view the additional information. It will display in a separate browser window or tab. Help Links 4.4 DOWNLOADING LESSON DATA FILES Some lessons include data files that need to be downloaded to your PC. Click on the data file s link. Your PC s standard download dialog box will display. Click on the Open button to view the file. It will open in its native application, in this case Excel. Click on the Save button to save the project file to a directory on your PC, file server, or a removable drive, Click on the Save As button to save and re-name the file. Click the Cancel button or X icon to close the download window. Lesson Data Files A-15

4.5 DOWNLOADING A SKILLS PROJECT Click the button to start a Skills Project. You will see the standard download window for your PC Click on the Open button to view the project file. It will open in its native application, which in this example would be Excel, and you can been working on it. Click on the Save button to save the project file to a directory on your PC, file server, or a removable drive, Click on the Save As button to save and re-name the file. Click the Cancel button or X icon to close the download window. Complete the Project and give the file to your instructor. This can be done by email or uploading the completed project file to a file server or to an area in a portal like SharePoint. Ask your instructor for details. Note: In order to complete Skills Projects, your PC must have MS Office 2010 installed in order to open and edit the project files. A-16
