SSIP 1 Smart Schools Bond Act (SSBA) Overview 3

About the Smart Schools Bond Act of 2014 The Smart Schools Bond Act (SSBA) was passed in the 2014-15 Enacted Budget and approved by the voters in a statewide referendum on Nov. 4, 2014. The SSBA authorized the issuance of $2 billion of bonds to finance improved educational technology and infrastructure. The intent of the SSBA is to improve current learning opportunities for NYS K12 students as well as future employment potential in the 21st Century job market. continued 4

About the Smart Schools Bond Act (cont.) The SSBA provides funds for three specific areas: Instructional technology including devices Technology infrastructure and connected systems including high-tech Security features Temporary classroom upgrades to permanent structures The SSBA requires that a Review Board review and approve districts Smart Schools Investment Plans (SSIPs) before any funds are made available. SSIPs are developed by a District s SSIP team based on current conditions and the District s five-year objectives. is eligible for $27,150,068. 5

SCSD: Mission and Goals (cont.) District Goals 1. Provide all students with equitable access to rigorous curriculum with aligned instructional materials and assessments in all subjects and all grade levels. 2. Recruit, develop, support, and retain effective teachers and school leaders. 3. Develop infrastructure to support student success. 4. Build a district culture based on high expectations, respect, and co-accountability for performance that recognizes and rewards excellence at all levels of the organization. 5. Communicate effectively with all district stakeholders. 8

SCSD: Technology Goals The District s Technology Committee has defined the following four major technology goals for Smart Schools Bond Act funding: Current Goals 1. Student Computing Devices to support Blended Personalized Learning (BPL) 2. Data Center Improvements Future Goals 3. High-Tech Security Systems (including Integrated Security Management, Access Control and Video Surveillance) 4. School Connectivity (High Speed Broadband and Wireless Connectivity) 9

SCSD Smart Schools Investment Plans Each goal will require one (or more) individual Smart Schools Investment Plans (SSIPs) to obtain the district s SSBA allocation from the State. This SSIP2.1 Executive Summary describes the first of two Phases required to meet District Goal 2, Data Center Improvements: Phase 1: Primary Data Center Improvements Phase 2: Data Center Redundancy Phase 2 will be the subject of its own SSIP (2.2). 10

SSIP2.1: Data Center Improvements Current Conditions Failure of the power and cooling system that supports the Data Center could result in the shutdown of critical data and network equipment required for educational technology systems. Recommended Improvements Cooling Power Generator 12

SSIP2.1: Data Center Improvements (cont.) Data Center Cooling Current primary system has limited reliability and is approaching end of useful life. Current back-up system cannot meet cooling demands on many days. Will be replaced with a data center-specialty system adequately sized for the cooling demands of the equipment located in the Data Center. Adequate cooling is required to ensure reliable operation of the district s Data Center. Generator To be replaced with a properly sized unit to replace the current generator which has long since exceeded its intended life expectancy. 13

Total SSIP2.1 Cost Estimate NOC Emergency Power & HVAC Upgrades Components Estimated Amount Generator $107,500 Includes: 150 Kw Emergency Generator; Utility-Grade Automatic Transfer Switch; Wiring/Conduit/Panel; Miscellaneous (rigging, removals, roof & GC work, etc.), and labor HVAC Upgrades $185,000 Includes: (2) Liebert 15-ton units, removals, piping, GC and roof work, miscellaneous related equipment, and labor Professional Fees $30,000 Total (with added OHP, Bonds, Insurance, etc.) $350,000 15
