View a test log In this tutorial, you examine a test log (file with the extension,.execution). A test log contains the results from a manual test. You open and view test logs in the Test Log viewer. Learning objectives After completing this tutorial, you will be able to perform the following tasks: v Open a test log and view it in the Test Log viewer v Use the features of the Test Log viewer in order to understand the test results 10 minutes Prerequisites This tutorial assumes that you know how to create a test script and run a manual test using IBM Rational Manual Tester. For the tutorial, we have provided a sample test log for you to use, but you can also use one of your own. To use this tutorial, open the sample test log, located in the install-location/samplescripts folder where install-location is the directory where Manual Tester is installed. The test log file was created using a test script for the ClassicsJavaB sample application. The script tests the titles and prices of classical music offered in the application. It also tests the checkout process. To open the test log, follow these steps: 1. If Manual Tester is not already running, click Start Programs IBM Rational Software Development Platform IBM Rational Manual Tester Rational Manual Tester. 2. In the main menu, click File Open. 3. In the Open window, change Files of type (at the bottom) to.execution. Browse to and select the sample test log, classicsbtest.execution, and then click Open. The test log opens, showing two tabs, Overview and Events. The Overview tab summarizes the test results. It contains two areas: General Information and Common Properties. These provide background data about the test script, the overall verdict, and the time and date of the test. You have opened and viewed a test log. In Lesson 2 you will explore results in more detail using the Events tab. Lesson 2: Viewing test log events In this lesson, you will further examine a test log to view and understand test results. 1
This lesson continues Lesson 1 (Viewing a test log). If you have not done so already, run Manual Tester and open a test log file. (For help with these tasks, see Lesson 1.) 1. Click the Events tab. This tab gives details about each event in the test log, including results. 2. Review all of the test failures. In the toolbar at the upper right, select the Fail verdict type. This sets the navigation type to Fail and brings you to the first test failure. Additional information about the failure is available in the Properties and Advanced Properties areas on the right side of the window. 3. Click Navigate to Next to view each of the failures in the log. As you view each failure, you can see that many of them relate to data (titles or prices) that are incorrect or missing. 4. Now navigate to an inconclusive verdict. In the toolbar, select the Inconclusive verdict type, and then use Navigate to Next to view each result in turn. 5. Click Navigate to First to return to the first inconclusive result in the log, Is it Piano Concerto No. 12? This is supposed to be the fourth entry under the Mozart folder. If you start the ClassicsJavaB application (point to Start Programs IBM Rational IBM Rational Manual Tester ClassicsJavaB), you can see that there are only three entries under the Mozart folder. This result is inconclusive because Piano Concerto No. 12 does not exist in the folder; therefore, you cannot check its title or price. (In this log, all of the inconclusive verdicts occurred because of missing data.) 6. Notice that this verdict has a screen shot attached. In the Extended Properties area, a file is shown under Attachments. To view this file, click Open. The file shows a screen shot of the Mozart folder in the ClassicsJavaB application, where only three entries are present. You have learned how to open and view test logs from Manual Tester.
