Demo Guide
This N5416A Demo Guide consists of : A single slide demo description followed by : Step 1 - instructions on how to connect all the equipment Step 2 - instructions on the configuration of the DUT using the Host PC Step 3 instructions on running the test and viewing the test results A single slide list of equipment required (listed at the end of this demo guide). A video of this demo is on the Agilent public website at: http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/facet.jspx?kt=1&cc=us&lc=eng&k =N5416a Page 2
One page N5416A Demo description: The demo consists of testing a flash drive for high speed signal quality. (Note that this is high speed, not full speed, and not low speed.) There are two demo tests: rise time and eye diagram. Run rise time first, repeat it to see the statistics. Run eye diagram. View the test report. The entire demo is less than one hour. Page 3
Step 1- connect all the equipment All of the instructions for hooking up the scope, fixture, DUT, and Host Pc are embedded in the N5416A setup wizard on the oscilloscope. Start the N5416A application: Analyze>Automated Test Apps> USB test. See Figure 1 on the next slide. Select high speed device rise time: Task Flow>Select Tests>USB Tests>Hi- Speed>Device Hi-Speed>Device Hi-Speed Signal Quality Test>Rise Time. See Figure 2. Select Configure and verify that the high speed device near end test is enabled. Select Connect. All the instructions and setups appear that explain how to power the fixture, connect the probe, and connect the Host PC. Be sure to set the S1 switch to the off position. The D2 led should be off if the switch is set to off. Click on the box at the bottom titled I have completed these instructions Page 4

Step 2 configure the Host PC and run the tests Download the USBHSET.exe from WWW.usb.org/developers/tools to your host PC. This software will be used to configure the DUT to send test packets. On the Oscilloscope select Run Tests. A dialog appears that steps you through the USB test tool on the Host PC. The dialog on the scope steps you through the configuration of the flash drive DUT to force it to send test packets. The Host PC s USB port is used to control the flash drive DUT. After the flash drive starts sending the test packets, the Host PC is disconnected from the system using the switch on the 501 fixture PCB. These instructions all appear on the scope. The test finishes and provides a short summary. The full report is placed into a project folder. The project is the directory where all the test reports are placed. Page 7
Step 3 run the actual test on the scope and view the results. After configuring the flash drive DUT with your Host PC in step 2, the application automatically runs the selected tests. At this point the scope will capture a packet, bracket the packet automatically, and measure all the USB-IF specified test parameters. When finished testing a short summary of the test results appears on the scope. This is NOT the test report. However, it conveniently summarizes the result for instant viewing. See Figure 3. The actual test report is in the user specified project directory. To view the actual report select Html Report tab from the USB application. The report is saved when you close the application. You will be given the opportunity to specify a different project folder at this time. Page 8

Equipment needed for this demo: 2 GHz or greater Infiniium Oscilloscope with software A4.21 or higher software application loaded on the scope One 1134A probe amplifier One E2678A differential socketed probe head One 501 test fixture (Agilent pn: E2645-66501) One flash drive (480 Mbits/s, USB 2.0) to be used as the DUT One 6 foot USB A/B cable One host PC to configure the DUT. The Host PC must be loaded with the configuration software. The software is USBHSET.exe and is available from the USB IF at www.usb.org/developers/tools Page 10
Software The new wizard USB N5416A requires scope release A.04.21. Software release A4.21 is a free upgrade and is available from www. Agilent.com. The separate N5416A software download is available at www.agilent.com or can be loaded from the 4.21 applications software CD. The URL for the N5416A download is at: http://www.home.agilent.com/cgi- bin/pub/agilent/editorial/cp_misceditorial.jsp?nav_id=- 536899087.536908137.02&LANGUAGE_CODE=eng&CONTENT_KEY=7 70523&ID=770523&COUNTRY_CODE=US The engineer must install a license key because the software will check for it.
