CyberDiscovery User Guide Version 0.1 Overview Welcome to CyberDiscovery! The CyberDiscovery is a high-resolution visualization and display instrument powered by the Sage2 software. You can use it for presentations, meetings, or any other event where display of high resolution imagery or collaborative activities are the core activities. While it is possible to do many different things with CyberDiscovery, this user guide is organized around 5 major activities: Screen Sharing Simultaneous screen sharing by multiple people allows users to collaborate on activities. Browser (Web Page) Display any webpage (including YouTube videos) at much higher resolution than is possible on most displays. PDF Review PDF documents, viewing multiple pages at a time. Image View high-resolution images at native resolution without loss of detail. Session Management Restore a set of saved app windows. These activities are not exclusive; you can review a PDF while having screen-sharing sessions open and editing the source document and viewing a high-resolution image or video at the same time. The organization of this guide is to start with an initial tour of the CyberDiscovery user interface, then to go over each of the different use cases. No matter what, you will need some device with the Chrome browser installed on it to use CyberDiscovery. A laptop is best, phones and tablets work ok, but are not very reliable. Note on Screenshots: Screenshots in these documents show the Chrome Browser in Incognito Mode. This is just for demonstration purposes, and is not required for use of the CyberDiscovery. It is expected that you will use CyberDiscovery with normal browser windows/tabs.
Initial Tour, Getting Started Turning the system on The CyberDiscovery should already be turned on, but if it isn t, please do the following: 1. Turn on the light-switch at the top of the divider wall (this turns on all of the panels) 2. Use the remote to turn on each of the displays a. A white light will briefly display in the lower left corner of each display after it gets power, but it will not automatically turn on. b. Use the remote to power on each of the displays (point the remote at the lower left corner of each display, get close, about 2 inches away). If you accidentally turn off one of the other displays, then you aren t getting close enough. c. All of the displays should show a solid white light in the lower left corner. 3. Turn on the CyberDiscovery PC with the button in the upper left of the front face. [Insert pic of the CyberDiscovery with highlighted items] The system should boot right into the CyberDiscovery desktop. You will still need to start the CyberDiscovery session to use the system. Starting or Restarting the CyberDiscovery session The CyberDiscovery session is controlled via the Administrative web interface. It is where the session is started or stopped, and where the session password is set. To start the session, navigate your browser to: https://cyberdiscovery.msu.montana.edu:10000 (the :10000 at the end is important!) You should see the following: Log in with the following credentials: Username: sage2 Password: cyberdiscovery Figure 1: Admin Interface Login
The Admin Interface will be displayed. 1. Click on the Sage2 button 2. Optionally set a session password (in the interface it is called a Meeting ID ) 3. Click the Start Button The display wall should pop up an empty session with the MSU logo in the background: If you need to restart the session (if it freezes, or something crashes), go back to the administrative URL above, click Stop Session and then Start Session again. Connecting to the Client Session After the session is started (when you see the grey background with the MSU logo in the background), you can connect by opening up the Chrome browser and going to: https://cyberdiscovery.msu.montana.edu
It will ask you for the session password (the Meeting ID) if you set one, and then will drop you into the client user interface. The first time you connect it will ask you to pick a color and name for your SAGE2 pointer (used when you interact directly with CyberDiscovery windows). Tour of the Client Interface The CyberDiscovery client interface is divided into two areas. 1. The representation of the display wall 2. The tool bar of application buttons at the bottom. The tool buttons are the primary ways that you will interact with the display wall. The following chapters will go into detail on a few of the functions of the display wall. There are more features and functionality of the CyberDiscovery, but the activities described in this guide are the only ones that are actively supported. You are free to explore, but we can t help you as much if you go off-guide. Interacting with the CyberDiscovery: Two Interaction Modes.
There are two interaction modes in CyberDiscovery. The first is the normal mouse interaction with the CyberDiscovery Client interface, where you can click, drag, and resize windows. It s also how you would launch applications. Right-clicking in this mode is the best way to interact with the tool-windows on the display. However, you are unable to use this mode to click on links in browser windows on the display. To do that, you need to use the SAGE2 Pointer tool. When you engage that tool, you will lose your local mouse and will get a pointer on the display that will have your chosen color and name attached to it. To get out of that mode, press the escape key (ESC). Here is a quick cheat-sheet of mouse interaction in CyberDiscovery: SAGE2 Cheat Sheet Mouse and keyboard operations Application Window Shit-TAB ALT Spacebar ESC Pointer modes Application interaction mode: directly control applications with keyboard and mouse (titlebar and corner active) Windowinteraction mode: move and resize windows Switch modes Temporary switch (while pressed) Activate the pointer Exit pointer mode Window Interaction Left button Move/Resize window Video Player Spacebar Play/pause l Toggle looping m Toggle mute r Rewind PDF Viewer Spacebar Next page Left arrow Previous page Right arrow Next page 1 First page 0 Last page r Refresh Right button Wheel (scroll) Show/Hide widgets Resize window (2 finger scroll gesture) Image Viewer i Show EXIF data
Screen Sharing One of the most powerful features of the CyberDiscovery is the ability to do simultaneous, collaborative screen sharing at full resolution. You must be using the Chrome Web Browser (https://www.google.com/chrome/) in order to use the Screen Sharing application. First Time Instructions If you have used Screen Sharing before, you can skip to the next section. If this is your first time, follow the instructions below: 1. Click on the Screen Sharing Application Button 2. A notification message will tell you that you need to install the Sage Screen Sharing browser extension. 3. Install the browser extension, then close and re-open the browser. 4. Navigate back to the CyberDiscovery client interface. Usage, Tips, and Tricks To use Screen Sharing, just click on the Screen Sharing Application button to start a session. You will get a dialog pop-up that will ask if you want to share your entire screen or just an application. It is up to you what you want to do, either one works fine. However, you can only have a single Screen Sharing session going at a time. So if you share a single application, you will not be able to share another simultaneously. Once the session has started, you will see an application window on your client interface that shows your name, color, and the name of the session. This window can be moved and re-sized like any other CyberDiscovery application. On the CyberDiscovery display, you will see the desktop or application that you have shared. Tips & Tricks It is best to open the CyberDiscovery Client browser session as a new browser window, not as a tab. That way it can stay activated in the background of what you are doing. o If you minimize the CyberDiscovery browser window or hide it behind another tab, it will stop updating! You will get a notification from the CyberDiscovery session to keep the browser window active if you minimize or hide the window. Screen Sharing uses a lot of battery power, so it is best to be plugged in. Browser (Web Page) The Browser application is a powerful tool to interact with web applications on the CyberDiscovery. This includes: YouTube, GigaPan, and many other sites. To open a Browser application: 1. Open the site you want to go to in a browser window on your computer. 2. Copy the URL address of the site 3. Click the Browser Application Button 4. Paste in the URL
The Browser Application window will appear on the client interface, where you can move and resize it. Use the right-click menu to zoom into the page 4 or 5 times. This makes text, links, and buttons legible on the CyberDiscovery. Use the Sage Pointer to interact with the links and buttons on the web page. Full Screen Bug If you use the Full Screen button on YouTube (or another web app capable of full-screen), it will trigger a bug in CyberDiscovery. To fix it, you need to press F11 on the wireless keyboard. YouTube Tips The best way to view YouTube videos is to reformat them into embedded videos. This may seem complicated but is really quite easy: 1. The original YouTube URL will look something like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tmbelthc_0 2. To turn that link into an embedded video, you would change it to: https://www.youtube.com/embed/6tmbelthc_0 a. Change the watch?v= to embed/ 3. You can autoplay or loop the video by adding options to the address: https://www.youtube.com/embed/6tmbelthc_0?autoplay=1&loop=1 4. To make a playlist of movies (useful for presentations or events), add a playlist option with a comma separated list of IDs. For example: PDF The PDF Application is a great way to collaboratively review documents on CyberDiscovery. To open a PDF, either: 1. Drag and Drop a PDF onto the CyberDiscovery Client session. 2. Use the File Navigator application to find an already uploaded PDF. To easily move between pages, click on the PDF in the CyberDiscovery Client session and then use your keyboard arrow keys. To view more than one page at a time, use the Sage Pointer to right-click on the PDF and click the large + button that appears (then click the X to close the right-click menu). Image The Image Viewing Application is capable of showing very large resolution images on the display. The image formats supported are: JPG, PNG, TIFF To open an image, either: 1. Drag and Drop an image onto the CyberDiscovery Client session. 2. Use the File Navigator application to find an already uploaded image.
Use the CyberDiscovery Client session to move/resize the images Note: viewing very large images (30MP+) will be very slow on CyberDiscovery and may crash the session. If this happens, go to the CyberDiscovery Admin Interface, and restart the session. Session Management Sessions are a special type of file (saved and reloaded from the File Navigator) that represents a session of application windows. For example, if you had 2 Browsers open, 1 PDF, and 1 image, you could save that session to re-open it later. Sessions are most useful for recurring trainings or collaborations that have lots of repeating activity. To save a session: 1. Click the Arrangement toolbar button 2. Click Save Session a. Give the session a name, the default just uses the current date and time. 3. Optionally download the session from the Media Browser a. Note: you may need to refresh the client interface for the new session file to show up To load a session: 1. If the session was downloaded a. Drag and drop the session onto the Client interface 2. If the session was saved in the Media Browser a. Click the Media Browser toolbar button b. Click the Sessions folder on the left c. Find your session and double-click it. Troubleshooting - If the screen stops updating, go to the Admin Interface and stop and re-start the session. - If the system crashes, reboot by using the keyboard and pressing ctrl-win-r. - To shut the system down, the easiest method is to use the ctrl-win-s hotkey.
