SECTION 2 A-Z of Print Terminology Artwork - Original copy of graphic design including photos, type, embedded fonts etc. for the intent of printing. Bleed - Is printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming; usually 3mm of bleed is required to ensure that white paper does not show after final trimming. Crop Marks - Also known as trim marks, these are lines printed in the corners of the printed sheets of paper to show Gemini where to trim the paper. CMYK - Cyan (blue), Magenta (red), Yellow and Key (black) are the colours that make up the full-colour process used by a printing press. Digital Printing - Refers to modern printing methods that use digital files, such as PDFs, instead of printing with plates. This is ideally suited to short runs, fast turnaround work and where personalisation is required. DPI - Dots per inch is a measurement of resolution of an image. Four-colour process - This is the system used to produce full colour printing. The four ink colours are cyan, magenta, yellow and black, which is often referred to as CMYK. The four inks are translucent and because of this can be over printed and combined in different percentages to produce a very wide range of colours. FTP - File transfer protocol. This is a method for computers to transfer files from one computer to another. GSM - Grams per square metre, which is an industry standard metric paper weight measurement. Imposition - This is the layout of pages planned up on a large sheet, so they are in the correct order when the sheets are folded and trimmed; there are many different imposition layouts. Offset Printing - Sheet fed offset printing applies to all Gemini s lithographic presses. It is where the paper does not come into direct contact with the printing plate. The inks are transferred from the plate to a blanket cylinder and then onto the paper, which protects the plate from being damaged. Offset Lithography - This works on the basic principle that oil and water do not mix. A lithographic plate has non-image areas that absorb water; during printing the plate is kept wet, so the wet areas reject the ink and the ink stays just on the image area. Pantone - This is the brand name for the industry s leading colour matching system. Large ranges of ink colours are given numbers or names, which produce standard colour results across the printing industry. They provide a colour swatch book to indicate the numbers against each colour. Proof - A printed, e-mailed, or on-line copy of the originally supplied artwork, which would have been ripped and manipulated through Gemini s software programmes in order to format the project for print. This is normally the final sign off stage before going to print. Resolution - Resolution is the measure of pixels in the display, usually expressed in measurements of width x height. For example, a monitor that is 1920 x 1080 is 1920 pixels across and 1080 pixels down. Higher resolution means more detail. RGB - Red, green and blue are the colours used to combine online graphics via an electronic screen. 5

SECTION 4 How to Prepare Artwork Files Supplying PDFs to Gemini for Printing? Then please use this guide for checking they are supplied correctly. Document Structure Single page pdf s all in one document. Page 1 to be the Outside Front Cover page, followed by p2 Inside Front Cover, text pages follow in order, then lastly the Inside Back Cover, followed by the Back Cover. This is very important if your document has no page folios! No double page spreads unless already agreed with Gemini, even if some pages have read over images. No unused spot colours in pdfs 3mm bleed on all sides. (areas with type or images that don t reach to within 3mm of the edge of the page don t need to have bleed) Single trim marks offset by 3mm. Offset pushes the trim marks out and away from the bleed area so that they don t appear within the bleed. Please don t supply reader spreads, this means that the pages are numbered across spreads sequentially (1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7 etc.) if they are supplied like this we will have to ask you to re-supply them as single pages. Fonts and Images All pdfs need to be CMYK unless using Spot colours, in which case please make sure that the Spot colours are used correctly and are named properly e.g. (Pantone 345 C), or whatever your pantone colours happen to be. No RGB images, these will get converted to CYMK and may cause a colour shift that you re not expecting. All fonts need to be embedded. If the fonts aren t embedded, then we cannot print your work. All Images to be 300dpi in the final pdf if they aren t, and you started off with a 300dpi image, then it s probably because you have enlarged the picture in your Desktop publishing software, i.e. Quark, InDesign, Photoshop. PDFs come in various versions, from v1.3 (flattened) to v1.8 (layered). Most Desktop Publishing software will allow you to choose which version you save your pdf as we would always recommend using the highest possible version (currently v1.8) as these are layered files and produce a better print image with less potential problems than 1.3 versions do. However, there might be times when a flattened pdf is the only way to make your pdf, in which case we will use that version (we might not be able to do minor amends if needed to a pdf made as v1.3). Acrobat Professional comes with the ability to flight check your files, however we normally do that as a matter of course, but it would be better to sort out potential problems before we get the files which may cause a delay in the printing process. 7

Sending Artwork If you would prefer to send us artwork for us to make pdfs, then there are a few things to note: Please do a collect for output in either Quark or InDesign, this will ensure that you have all the components that we require for making your pdf and printing your work. In Quark go to the file menu and choose Collect for Output and follow the instructions to save all the pictures, fonts and the Quark document all to a folder of your choice. In InDesign go to the file menu and choose Package, just choose where to save the documents and let InDesign do the rest. If for some reason you can t do a collect for output, then you will need to collect all the components manually: We require all the fonts used in the document We require all the Images that are linked to the document We require the actual document either InDesign or Quark file. Finally, please remember to.zip all the files into one compressed item and either email it (below 30mb) or upload it to our FTP site (username and password on request). 8

SECTION 5 FTP Upload You can access our FTP server in one of two ways; A) Open up our FTP Client Area Section: http://ftp.gemini-print.co.uk B) With an FTP client such as Fetch, Mass transit, Captain FTP, using this address ftp.gemini-print.co.uk (please note with an ftp client you do not need an ftp. or http:// prefix to address) Once you have arrived at the login page enter the username and password given to you by a member of the Gemini Print team or call 01273 464 884. Once logged in 1) Click the folder named Files to Gemini this will take you inside that folder where you can put your files. 2) So we can start work on your files asap please name your new folder with the job title and company name. Once you have uploaded your files, ensure that you log out, at that point it will trigger an email to all Gemini co-ordinators to let them know the files have been uploaded. 9
