Data ModuLeaf Mini Multileaf Collimator Precision Beam Shaping for Advanced Radiotherapy

ModuLeaf Mini Multileaf Collimator Precision Beam Shaping for Advanced Radiotherapy The ModuLeaf Mini Multileaf Collimator (mmlc) generates precise and fine field shapes for state-ofthe-art stereotactic radiation treatments of brain and head and neck tumors, as well as other brain lesions such as arteriovenous malformations. The ModuLeaf mmlc s field size and precision also permit it to be used for extra-cranial 3D conformal and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) treatments. The ModuLeaf mmlc provides unique advantages to radiation therapy departments. With a 2.5 width at the isocenter for all 80 leaves and a maximum field size 1 of 10 cm x 12 cm, ModuLeaf is one of the finest resolution mini MLCs available in the industry today Compatibility with most major linear accelerators and treatment planning systems makes it an economical and easy upgrade on current equipment Sophisticated and cutting-edge design developed in close cooperation with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ Heidelberg) to ensure ease of use and solid reliability in the clinical routine Demountable design provides clinical flexibility Features and Clinical Benefits In less than five minutes, the ModuLeaf mmlc is easily mounted onto the linear accelerator accessory holder with a motorized trolley. With this quick step, a Siemens linear accelerator becomes a highly accurate treatment delivery machine that performs similar to dedicated radiosurgery systems. When mounted on a Siemens linear accelerator equipped with a 550 TxT Treatment Table, the ModuLeaf mmlc combines its 2.5 leaf projection with exceptional isocentric specifications and provides a sharp tool to irradiate the tumor while sparing the healthy surrounding tissues. The ModuLeaf is a versatile add-on mmlc for 3D conformal IMRT and stereotactic applications. The ModuLeaf mmlc also supports high-resolution IMRT delivery. Its large over-travel and outstanding 0.5 leaf positioning accuracy ensure that the dose distribution effectively delivered to a patient matches the planned dose distribution. Extremely low leakage minimizes unnecessary dose to healthy tissue. A field size of 10 cm x 12 cm enables the ModuLeaf mmlc to be used in a wide variety of anatomical sites. 80 leaves 2.5 leaf width at isocenter when mounted on a Siemens linear accelerator 10 cm x 12 cm maximum field size at isocenter Low interleaf leakage Fast mounting process Note: all specifications at isocenter vary with the actual sourceto-collimator distance. 1. When mounted on a Siemens linear accelerator.

ModuLeaf Mini Multileaf Collimator Treatment Applications The ModuLeaf mmlc is a versatile and powerful tool that delivers a precise radiation dose to the target volume while sparing critical tissue. The design allows it to be used in a wide array of clinically valuable treatment applications offering a high precision treatment to a larger patient population. 3D Conformal High leaf resolution and precise leaf positioning enable the user to create more conformal shapes over a range of possible field sizes. In combination with minimal leakage, it provides a superior technique for conformal radiation therapy. IMRT The ModuLeaf mmlc was designed for IMRT. The extensive over-center travel of the leaves, fast positioning of a shape, and low leakage make it ideal for unique field shapes required by IMRT. The ModuLeaf mmlc mounts on the accessory holder of a Siemens linear accelerator. Stereotactic The fine leaf width and accurate leaf positioning allow precise beam shaping for small intracranial and extracranial target volumes, where highest precision is required. The ModuLeaf mmlc is ideal for stereotactic radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery applications. Weight kg Length Width Height Dimensions 39.7 720 360 130 Focusing Characteristics of Leaves The ModuLeaf mmlc employs single-focused leaves. The cross section perpendicular to leaf travel direction is focused (i.e., the leaf side surfaces follow the beam divergence). To reduce leakage between leaves (interleaf leakage), the leaves are slightly de-focused (i.e., the leaf side surfaces are focused toward a virtual source offset by a few millimeters from the X-ray source). The leaf ends are rounded to achieve a position-independent penumbra over the entire travel range. Med. Biol. 47: N171-177, 2002. 2.5 leaf width at isocenter for all 80 leaves provides a maximum field size of 10 cm x 12 cm.

Interfaces to Linear Accelerators The ModuLeaf mmlc is compatible with most coercially available linear accelerators. Depending on the linear accelerator model and V&R system, there are different levels of integration available. The usage of Basic Modes have no limitations on linear accelerator models, but requires more interaction from the user during a treatment session. The Automatic and Synchronized Modes have been developed for IMRT treatments. This feature allows verification of treatment setup between ModuLeaf mmlc and the linear accelerator, as well as the execution and verification of step and shoot IMRT treatments.
