BUILDING PROVINCIAL CAPACITY IN PAKISTAN FOR CROP ESTIMATION, FORECASTING, AND REPORTING BASED ON THE INTEGRATED USE OF REMOTELY SENSED DATA (GCP/PAK/125/USA) Description Speaker Patrizia Monteduro (International Consultant, FAO) SCOPE The scope of the training is to give an overview of the Geonetwork opensource software, its graphical interface integrated by theory and practice on metadata development, data publishing and administration of the Web portal. DURATION 3 DAYS SUMMARY The GeoNetwork and metadata training course for users and administrators will allow the final beneficiaries to benefit from the Web application and its several functionalities by improving their capacity to share information efficiently and consistently. Furthermore, the training will strengthen participant s skills on spatial data and information management and will make them able to also transfer the knowledge acquired to the geospatial data users in their own national organization. BACKGROUND Geonetwork opensource is a decentralized geospatial information management system based on international standards, designed to enable easy and timely access to geospatial datasets and cartographic products through descriptive metadata from a variety of sources using the capacities of the Internet. It improves geographic information sharing within and between organizations, reducing duplications and enhancing information consistency and data preparedness using standard Web services and protocols. It is currently used in numerous Spatial Data Infrastructure initiatives across the world. FAO and other UN Agencies adopted GeoNetwork as an open source solution to systematically archive, discover, access, visualize and disseminate their geospatial resources and products. Furthermore, at the national level, several FAO partner projects have already benefited from being part of the same platform implementation, strengthening their capacities in geospatial infrastructure, Web standards and decision support tools. TRAINING OBJECTIVES Increase the awareness of the metadata value as critical component of geo-spatial datasets. Build capacity for creating and managing standardized metadata through the use of GeoNetwork Opensource software. 1
Facilitate the use of the GeoNetwork catalogue for geospatial datasets and related information publication and dissemination among the project's partners. Facilitate the use of the Web mapping application for displaying project geo-spatial layers for the existing and future data of the project. Get familiar with other opensource tools, like FWTools. EXPECTED OUTPUTS Use of the GeoNetwork catalogue dedicated to explore the metadata catalogue functionalities. Use of the GeoNetwork metadata editor tool, specifically addressed to the creation of standard metadata and their publication along with the associated datasets. Use of the GeoNetwork administration tool to manage data and users. Use of the Web mapping application, designed for displaying geo-spatial layers published by the project or by remote sources. As part of the practical sessions, the latest GeoNetwork software version will be installed on each participant's laptop/workstation to practice and familiarize with the system functionalities during and after the training. TRAINING OUTCOMES Hands-on knowledge on how to explore GeoNetwork interface and functionalities, including metadata and web maps. Skills in using the GeoNetwork metadata editor tool, specifically addressed to the creation of standard metadata and their publication along with the associated datasets. Capability to manage and administrate the software and its users, including the access to data from remote servers worldwide. TRAINING MODULES 1. For Generic Users Introduces metadata concepts and provides overview of GeoNetwork software, how to search, retrieve and display spatial information stored in it; 2. For Editors Enables users to generate new metadata records in GeoNetwork catalogue as well as to make them and their associated spatial resources available via Web. 3. For Administrators Trains Web administrator(s) on managing content and users as well as configuring and administrating GeoNetwork s desktop tools. 2
