8 SCOTLAND S SDI - THE WIRING DIAGRAM A managed Discovery Metadata Service forms the government centrally provided piece of Scotland s SDI and is the first place that potential Scottish data users will go to discover available data and services. NERC All rights reserved

9 A co-funded research partnership was formed between the Scottish Government (Alex Ramage, Shona Nicol and Ian McKay), the BGS ( for technical advice to ensure the Scottish SDI metadata and services are INSPIRE compliant and EDINA ( who are hosting the Geonetwork opensource based Catalogue.

10 A metadata editor for the INSPIRE compliant UK discovery metadata standard GEMINI 2.1 Complete with combined ISO (XML schema implementation of abstract standards for datasets and for services) schema and GEMINI profile schematron validation tool. NERC All rights reserved

11 A publicly available Discovery Metadata Catalogue for Scottish data service users to discovery available services and the datasets they provide. With currently approximately 32 (WMS) service (= Interactive resources ) metadata records and 108 dataset metadata records (= Datasets ) are discoverable increasing slowly all the time. Policy is that the catalogue will only hold dataset metadata records of datasets that are portrayed/available from a service or will be shortly.

12 UKLII UK National Geoportals need to be CSW harvestable via portal to EU geoportal. Other portals and applications such as the Scotland Environment Web need to be able to query, using INSPIRE promoted standards such as CSW 2.0.2, and retrieve metadata records from the Scottish SDI Discovery Metadata Service.
