What is Panopto? Panopto is a video content management system for uploading, managing and sharing recorded lectures, flipped classroom videos, campus events, and more. It comes with built-in video analytics, a web-based video editor, automatic encoding to ensure your videos play efficiently on any device, and a unique search engine that helps your students review material mentioned or shown in their course videos. NOTE: A webcam is required for creating a Panopto recording. Many newer computers already have a webcam built-in. Otherwise a webcam must be purchased separately (most electronics retailers offer webcams for under $50). Click here to watch a video introduction about Panopto Click here for more information on Panopto Getting Started: Download the Panopoto Recorder Recording: How to create a recording in a Canvas page, discussion, or assignment How to upload a video from your computer How to edit a recording Canvas: How to set up a Panopto assignment in your Canvas course How to copy or move a Panopto recording in Canvas courses Help: Need help?

Download the Panopto Recorder: Before using Panopto you will need to download the Panopto recorder. Note: DO NOT use web search tools like Google to locate this application. Use only this version that is provided within Canvas. To download the recorder: Login to Canvas and enter your course Click on Panopto Recordings on the left of your course Click on the Create button on the top, then Record a new session Click on Download Installer - select the appropriate option for your computer Open the install file and follow the steps to complete the installation

How to create a recording in a Canvas page, discussion, or assignment: Navigate to the Canvas page, discussion, or assignment Either create or edit the page, discussion, or assignment Click on the More External Tools icon, then Panopto Recordings: Once the Panopto Recorder opens: a) click on the Record tab; b) type in a name for the recording; c) click Record: When the recording is complete, click on Upload (continued below)

Once the upload is complete, close the recorder then click on Insert on the bottom, which will insert the recording into Canvas: You can continue editing the Canvas page, discussion, or assignment, then Save when finished.

How to upload a video from your computer: It is strongly recommended to create your recordings directly within Canvas (see How to create a recording in a Canvas page, discussion, or assignment above). However, there may be times when you need to create your video outside of Canvas, which you will then need to upload into your Canvas course: However, if you need to upload a video that you created outside of Canvas, follow the steps below: While in your Canvas course, click on Panopto Recordings on the left Click on the Create button on the top, then Upload media Drag your video files onto the screen, or click to select from your computer

How to edit a recording: While in your Canvas course, you can access the Panopto video editor by clicking on Panopto Recordings on the left of your course, hover over the name of the recording, then click on the Edit button: For an overview of the Panopto video editor, click on the link below: Panopto editor overview For more advanced editing instructions, click on the link below, then Editing: Panopto advanced editing features

How to set up a Panopto assignment in your Canvas course: Step 1 (of 3): Create the Assignment Click on Assignments on the left of the Canvas course, then +Assignment Enter an Assignment name, description, points, due date, etc. Under Submission Type select Online then Text Entry Save & Publish the assignment on the bottom of the page Step 2 (of 3): Provides instructions for students Copy & paste the instructions below into the Assignment description: Student instructions: How to submit an assignment using Panopto (continued below)

Step 3 (of 3): Prepare Panopto Click on Panopto Recordings on the left Click on the gear icon on the top right (folder settings) Click on Create Assignment Folder in the middle of the page (NOTE: this step is required, otherwise students will not be able to upload videos to Panopto in the Canvas course) The Assignment is now ready for students

How to copy or move a Panopto recording in Canvas courses: Click on Panopto Recordings on the left while in your Canvas course Then click on the arrow on the top right: Select the recording you want to copy or move by clicking in the checkbox on the left. Then click on the Copy or Move button along the top (IMPORTANT: Selecting Move will permanently remove the recording from the original course): Type in the course ID you want to copy or move into (for example ENGL-101-13) and click on the appropriate course from the dropdown menu: (continued below)

Click on the green Copy or Move button on the top right: The Recording will now appear in the Panopto Recordings area of the course the recording was copied or moved into.
