Enabling Panopto in D2L Authorize your course to use D2L/Panopto integration. Login to D2L, open the Content section, Add a module, call it something like Recordings or Videos Then, click Add Existing Activities Select External Learning Tools Select Panopto Recordings After the Panopto Recordings link is added to your Content module, you MUST click on it to create the Panopto folder associated with this class. Done Install recorder program Login to D2L Go to Content, Recordings, click on Panopto Recordings We recommend maximizing the window The Panopto recorder needs to be installed on each computer you want to record from. This is done only once! using the icon. On the Panopto screen, notice your course name Click on the Download Panopto (Recorder) link Click on the proper installer for your computer system (Windows or Mac) Run the installer. Click Next, Install, and Finish The Recorder will open, just close it Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 1

My Folder (Best Practices) The best way to organize your videos in Panopto is to use My Folder to store all your recordings. The idea is to create subfolders for each of your classes. Then, create videos for your classes and organize them in the subfolders. Once you have the videos in the respective subfolders, you can share the folder so anyone with the link can access the videos. This way, you can crate links or embed videos within D2L that will be accessible to anyone that clicks on the link in this case, anyone in your class. To do this: Select My Folder Click on Add Folder to create a folder for each of your classes For example, create a folder for your INFS2200 class Next, set the class folder so it can be accessed by anyone with the link Select the INFS2200 class folder Click on the gear icon to change its properties Click on Share, then under Who has access: Select Anyone with the link This will make all videos under this folder accessible to anyone that has the link. At the same time, the video will be unlisted so, it will not appear on the Public home Panopto home page Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 2

Configure Course Folder defaults In the Panopto course folder, click on the gear icon to access the settings for the folder. The settings will apply to all recording sessions in this folder (past and future). The settings you are about to set will allow students to: Download the video recordings to their personal computers or mobile devices for offline viewing; Download an audio podcast of the recording and; Enable speech recognition for searching purposes. Enable the assignment folder for students to upload their videos In Overview, click on Create Assignment Folder so students can save their video assignments in this folder. Click on Settings Make sure the following options are checked: Enable podcast feed Enable authenticated users to download podcasts (optional) Allow viewers to make notes public (optional) Under Captions, Make sure the Automatically caption new sessions using option is set to Panopto speech recognition Under Availability, Sessions become available, select never (unless set on session) This way the videos only become available when you explicitly make them available. See Make the video available to students section in this document. Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 3

Naming the recording If you followed all the previous steps, the recording will not be available to viewing by default. Actually, the recording will say Not available to viewers, because that s what we set the folder default to. Before you make the recoding available to students, it is important that you properly name the recording. Hover your mouse over the recording and click on the Settings link On the Name line, click on Edit, change the name and click on Save. Close the Settings window by clicking on the big X in the top right corner. In the Panopto web page, click on the button. The video list will refresh and show the new name. 6 Adding Auto-captions to a video When you create a new video in Panopto, you can request to add auto-captions to the video. This will take a few minutes depending on the length of the video and the amount of requests in the queue. To add the captions: Select a video, click on Edit - the video options will show when you hover your mouse under the video title The Edit screen will open on a new window Click on Captions Click the drop down to the right of Import captions Select the option that says Import automatic captions if available The time stamped captions will automatically appear in the captions area. Otherwise, please contact the Panopto administrator to reprocess the video. Administrator: click on the option that says Upload or request captions. Click on Search then, click on Reprocess. This will queue the video for speech recognition. Then, after a few minutes, go back to edit the video and import the automatic captions. Click on Publish to save the edited video. Requirements Automatic captioning uses speech recognition to create a time-stamped transcript of the presentation. The accuracy of this process is heavily dependent on many factors see note to the right. Important Tip for Audio Quality Quality of the audio. The better the quality of the audio the better the transcription. Please use a high quality microphone. Room microphones are not good. Lapel or personal microphones are better. Keep the room noise to a minimum. Quality of the speaker. It is also important that the speaker enunciate correctly and clearly. Speak with a clear and loud voice. Do not mumble. Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 6

Edit Video Editing the video allows you to: Cut some sections of the video and, Add/Edit captions to the video To edit the video: Hover your mouse over the session name and click on Edit. The main computer screen will appear on the right side larger area If you used a webcam, your video will appear on the top left side. Please ignore the quality of the video shown on the screen. This is a lower quality used for editing purposes only. The final product will appear with the quality you selected by default. The most important part here is the Captions tab. This will allow you to add time stamped captions that will scroll as your video plays. Add captions using the instructions on the right side box of this document. When you are done editing, click on Save or Save As. When adding captions, be mindful that you would like to align the caption text with the narrator voice. To do this: Play the recording to listen to the audio. Listen for a complete sentence, then pause the video. Enter or edit the text in the box. This will time stamp the text with the video to the current position. Repeat this process until you are done with the video captions. Remember, you do not have to caption every single word, it is OK to sumarize the captions. Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 7

Add a Link to a Panopto Video in D2L You can add a link to your Panopto video inside your D2L Content section. To do this: In the Panopto window: o Hover over the video, click on Share o Right click on the Share Link text and select Copy o Close this screen and go back to D2L In D2L o Go to Content o Select a D2L content module (or create a new one) to place this new link in o Select the content module o In the content module, click on New, select Create a Link o On the New Link window o Enter a title that describes the recording o In the URL box, paste the link make sure to delete all text in the space before o Click on Open as External Resource o Click on [Create] o Done! This way students will be able to click on a link directly within D2L Content section and view the recordings on a new browser window. This way also helps you organize the videos using the Content section modules. VERY IMPORTANT: Depending on what setting you selected for the Share property of the folder/video, students may or may not need to click on the Panopto Recordings link before watching Panopto videos. The best option is to set the folder to Anyone with the link Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 8

How to Embed a Panopto Video in D2L Another even better way to add Panopto videos to D2L is to use the Insert Stuff widget in the D2L editor. The Insert Stuff widget is available anytime you are entering text in D2L for example, when editing a content section or when adding/editing a news item. For example, let s embed a Panopto video in a Content s section module. In this example, we have a module named Database Modeling. Click on the Database Modeling module Click on Add a description this will open the text editor to add descriptive text to the module Click on the Insert Stuff icon The Insert Stuff window will open Select Panopto Embed By default, your class folder will show. You can switch to any of your folders, in this case we select the SAM training subfolder All the videos in the SAM Training subfolder will appear. Select the video you want to insert Click on Insert, and Insert again Now, you are back to the Database Modeling Module, editing the description, click on Update button The video is now embedded inside the Database Modeling module description. Notice that the video shows an overlay with the name of the video (top) and a watermark with the MT logo (bottom). To play the video just click on the arrow on the center of the video and the video will play inside D2L. The captions will show automatically by clicking on the CC option. You also have options to play the video in full screen and to download the video file to your device. Jones College of Business ITS Panopto Quick Start 9

Viewing the Recording To view the recording, just click on the recording name. A new window will appear. Depending on the number of primary and secondary sources you selected, the recorder will show as shown in the figures to the right. Viewer with Video and Primary Screen captures The first sample is uses webcam video and screen capture. Notice that this recording has a Captions tab on the left side. The captions are highlighted on blue and are synchronized with the narrator voice using the timings you entered while editing the video. Search Box. The search box is located under the webcam video, on the left side. Panopto will search the keywords in three places: if they appeared on the screen for 2 seconds, or on any slides of the PowerPoint presentation, or on any words spoken by the narrator. Just click on any result and the recording will jump to that instance in time. Viewer with Video, Primary Screen and PowerPoint captures The second recording sample uses video, screen and Power Point capture. Notice that this recording has a Contents tab on the left side. The Contents titles are created from the PowerPoint slide titles and are synchronized with the presentation. You can navigate the presentation by clicking on the content titles or the slides at the bottom of the screen. Users can add notes, bookmarks and/or comments to the recordings. Notes are either: all public or all private and always time stamped Bookmarks are private and time stamped Comments are always public and no time stamped Teachers can: Add public comments conveying information to all the class. Add public, time stamped notes to highlight important sections. Students can: Add public comments to share with all the class Add private bookmarks Add private notes, or public notes to share with all the class.
