1 Capacity Expansion Overview Introduction The HP StoreOnce 4900 Backup system consists of a head server unit (which contains operating system disks only), a disk enclosure with 44 TB of pre-configured storage on eleven 4 TB hard disks plus four hot spare disks, and a 1U supporting shelf to install below the system. It is compatible with HP standard racks and is scalable from 11 to 140 disks. There are two options for expanding storage: BB908A : HP StoreOnce 4900 44TB Capacity Expansion These are packs of eleven 4 TB disks that may be added to the original disk enclosure until all disk bays are full. A maximum of five of these kits may be used with each enclosure. BB904A : HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion Once the original expansion shelf is full, one further disk enclosure may be purchased and connected to the system. This disk enclosure contains eleven 4 TB disks and four hot spare disks. Storage in this shelf may also be expanded using up to five of the BB908A expansion kits. Planning for the Capacity Expansion The addition of storage is an online operation; additional storage may be added while backups/restores are in progress. However, it is very important to plan for the capacity upgrade to minimize performance impact on backup/restore operations during the process. IMPORTANT: Although the StoreOnce Backup system remains available and the existing storage remains accessible during the expansion process, always schedule capacity expansion as a maintenance activity in a quiet period. Make sure that host users are aware of the expansion process and check to see how any scheduled jobs, such as replication and tape backup, may be affected by decreased performance. Expansion process and time considerations The recommended option is: 1. Run the StoreOnce CLI command to discover the storage and allow parity initialization to complete before accessing the storage. This can take up to 10 hours on an HP StoreOnce Backup system with the maximum disk configuration. 2. Run the StoreOnce CLI command to add the storage and create the filesystem. This can take up to 4 hours on an HP StoreOnce Backup system with the maximum disk configuration. In the above sequence, the filesystem is created before jobs are scheduled to access the storage, so the maximum required window for completing the expansion will be 14 hours. IMPORTANT: If you run the add storage command before parity initialization completes, the amount of time required to complete parity initialization cannot be predicted because it depends upon the workload of the system. Be aware that it may take several days to complete. If you schedule jobs to access the storage before parity initialization completes, they will run but performance will be impaired. See Applying the License and Completing the RAID Expansion (page 19) for more information about running the StoreOnce CLI commands. 4 Capacity Expansion Overview

Rack warnings For detailed safety information, refer to the rack documentation and the Safety Guide provided with the product. WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, be sure that: The leveling jacks are extended to the floor. The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks. The stabilizing feet are attached to the rack if it is a single-rack installation. The racks are coupled together in multiple-rack installations. Only one component is extended at a time. 2 Installing the HP StoreOnce 4900 44TB Capacity Expansion One disk enclosure, containing 11 disks of pre-configured storage and 4 hot spare disks, is supplied with the product and is connected at installation. See the HP StoreOnce 4900 Backup Installation and Configuration Guide for details. This chapter describes how to install additional HP StoreOnce 4900 44TB Capacity Expansion kits, which contain eleven 4TB disks, into the disk enclosure. Unlike the pre-configured storage, additional storage must be licensed, discovered and added to the StoreOnce Backup system before it is available for use. Please note that there is a different license for the 44TB and the 60TB Capacity Expansion. When adding expansion 1 through 5 for each enclosure, the 44TB license is required to be added for each expansion. See Applying the License and Completing the RAID Expansion (page 19). NOTE: Once the first disk enclosure is completely full, further expansion is possible using the HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion Kit. For instructions on installing this expansion kit, go to Installing and cabling the HP StoreOnce 60TB Capacity Expansion kit (page 14). Distributing the drives correctly The initial eleven disks (plus four hot-plug disks) in the disk enclosure are installed and pre-configured as follows when the HP StoreOnce 4900 Backup is installed. The disks in HP StoreOnce 4900 44 TB Capacity Expansion kits must be added to specific bays in the drawers within the disk enclosure depending upon the sequence in which they are being added. Each drawer has a label that specifies the sequence in which each set of 11 disks must be installed. This sequence is mandatory for the product to function because the StoreOnce software expects the storage to be populated in this way. HP is not responsible for any damage or injury caused by the mishandling of the HP StoreOnce Backup system. Refer to your rack documentation for detailed safety instructions about working with units within the rack and ensuring that the rack is stable. WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, ensure that only one hard drive drawer is extended at a time. When adding hard drives to the hard drive drawer, observe the following general guidelines: When the drawer is opened, the cooling fans in the enclosure will run at full-speed. This is normal. Hard drives are sensitive to excessive vibration. Use care when opening and closing the drawer. Never leave the drawer open for any length of time. It should be opened only for maintenance and storage expansion. Verify that the drives are fully seated before closing the drawer. The drawer is fully closed when the fans slow down to their normal speed. The drawer should be closed with the handle in the released position. NOTE: Remember to close the handle after closing the drawer Important Safety information 9

To install the drives 1. Use the StoreOnce User Interface to check what drives are already installed in the disk enclosure. To find out what disks are installed in drawer 1, expand the Hardware tree as follows: Hardware Storage Cluster 1 Drive Enclosures Sub Enclosure (Drawer 1) Drives A list of installed drives is displayed with their disk bay locations. In the following example only the base storage configuration has been installed in Drawer 1. 2. Use the StoreOnce User Interface to check what drives are installed in drawer 2, expand the Hardware tree as follows: Hardware Storage Clusters Storage Cluster 1 Drive Enclosures Sub Enclosure (Drawer 2) Drives A list of installed drives is displayed with their disk bay locations. 3. Having determined what disks are already installed, use the label on the disk enclosure to determine which drawer in the disk enclosure should be populated with the set of additional 11 disks. See (page 8). In our example, we have established that this is Expansion #1, so the additional disks will go into drawer 2. 4. Open the hard drive drawer for drawer 2. Pull the handle up (1) and out (2) to extend the drawer (3). Figure 7 Opening the disk drawer To install the drives 11

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all eleven disks have been installed. Close the hard drive drawer. You will hear it click into place when it is securely closed. The fans will return to normal speed when both drawers are properly closed. WARNING! Pinch hazard Keep hands out of front and rear of chassis when closing hard drive drawers. CAUTION: To prevent improper cooling and thermal damage, do not operate the disk enclosure for an extended period of time with the drawer open. 3 Installing and cabling the HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion Always refer to your rack documentation and to the Safety Guide and the Installation and Configuration Guide on the HP StoreOnce Backup CD for detailed instructions, including important safety information, about installing units within the rack. This chapter describes how to install the HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion. Unlike the pre-configured storage, additional storage must be licensed, discovered and added to the StoreOnce Backup system before it is available for use. Please note that there is a different license for the 44TB and the 60TB Capacity Expansion. The 60TB license is required to be added for this expansion. See Applying the License and Completing the RAID Expansion (page 19). The recommendation is to locate the second disk enclosure below the HP StoreOnce 4900 head server, so that both disk enclosures are below the head server. This is because the disk enclosures are very heavy and locating the heaviest items in the bottom part of the rack helps ensure rack stability and minimize the amount of lifting required during installation. It may be necessary to move the head server unit higher up in the rack so that you can install the disk enclosure in the recommended location. IMPORTANT: If you choose to install the disk enclosure above the head server, it is recommended to install a 1U support shelf immediately above the head server unit to protect it from the weight of the disk enclosure. Important safety information WARNING! The disk enclosure with no drives installed weighs 72.58 kg (160.00 lb). With all drives and components installed, the enclosure can weigh up to 145.15 kg (320 lb). To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment: Observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual material handling. Use caution and get help to lift and stabilize disk enclosures during installation or removal, especially when the disk enclosure is not fastened to the rack. CAUTION: Use extreme caution when installing and pulling units from the rack; they can slip and fall, causing damage to the HP StoreOnce Backup system or injury. HP is not responsible for any damage or injury caused by the mishandling of the HP StoreOnce Backup system. Installing the rails and locking nuts The rack rails are marked for easy identification. The left rack rail is marked "L" and the right rack rail is marked "R." To install the rack rails: Determine where the second disk enclosure will be installed and install the rails and locking nuts, as follows: 1. Begin with the left rack rail. Align the end of the rail with the rear rack column. 2. Slide the rack rail closed until the end of the rail is locked in place, wrapping behind the rear rack column. 3. Slide the front end of the rail to the rack front column. When fully seated, the rack rail will lock into place. 14 Installing and cabling the HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion

Figure 10 Installing the rails 4. Repeat the procedure for the right rack rail. 5. Insert the eight locking nuts into the rack; two on each column. These will be used to secure the thumbscrews on the front of the disk enclosure and the mounting brackets that will be attached to the rear of the disk enclosure. To locate the correct position for the locking nuts, count up 4U from the location of the rails (1). The nuts go either side of the +4U position on each rack column (2). Installing the disk enclosure The base storage disks should be left in the disk enclosure, but do not add any further expansion disks (if purchased) until the second disk enclosure has been installed. Drawer one (left): Two spare hot disks in bays 34 and 35 and eleven disks in bays 23-33 Drawer two (right): Two spare hot disks in bays 34 and 35 1. Holding the handles (1), lift the disk enclosure onto the rack and push it into position (2). Tighten the thumbscrews (3) to secure the unit to the rack. WARNING! Always use at least two people to lift an enclosure into the rack. If the enclosure is being loaded into the rack above chest level, a third person must assist with aligning the enclosure with the rails while the other two people support the weight of the enclosure. 2. Attach the retaining brackets (1) to either side of the rear of the disk enclosure and secure them to the rack. Figure 13 Attaching the retaining brackets Cabling the second disk enclosure The cabling for the second disk enclosure is identical to the cabling for the first disk enclosure, except it is connected to the second RAID card in slot 4. NOTE: The system will not boot if the SAS cabling is incorrect. 1. Connect the supplied 2m SAS cables as follows: RAID card 2, port 2 to Drawer 2, I/O module B, port 2 RAID card 2, port 1 to Drawer 1, I/O module A, port 1 2. If you have purchased additional HP StoreOnce 44TB Capacity Expansion kits for the second enclosure at the same time as the HP StoreOnce 60TB Capacity Expansion kit, install the sets of 11 disks in exactly the same sequence as described in Installing the HP StoreOnce 44TB Capacity Expansion kit (page 8). 18 Installing and cabling the HP StoreOnce 4900 60TB Capacity Expansion

4 Applying the License and Completing the RAID Expansion IMPORTANT: Please note that there is a different license for the HP StoreOnce 44TB and the HP StoreOnce 60TB Capacity Expansion. When adding expansion 1 through 5 for each enclosure, the 44TB license is required. When adding the second disk enclosure, the 60TB license is required. Obtaining the license The Capacity Expansion Kit includes a license entitlement certificate. This is a paper document that contains all the information you need to obtain your unique LTU (License to Use) key. If you have Internet access, you can obtain the key from the HP Licensing site by connecting to the web address specified on the certificate and following the instructions on the web. (Users without Internet access may use the contact numbers provided with the entitlement certificate.) Applying the LTUs can only be performed by an Administrator using StoreOnce CLI commands; see the HP StoreOnce CLI Reference Guide for more information. 1. In order to obtain your license you will need to provide the Serial Number of your HP StoreOnce Backup system. This can be found on the HP StoreOnce page of the User Interface under System Information. NOTE: Do not use the warranty serial number that can be found on the server or tag attached to it. Always use the Serial Number as displayed in the StoreOnce GUI. 2. Obtain the unique LTU key as instructed on the License Entitlement Certificate. This is normally from the HP Licensing website at http://www.myhplicensing.hp.com. HP recommends that you select the option to save the license to a.dat file. The file can also be emailed to the registered license owner's email address or you can use Cut and Paste to copy it to a temporary file. NOTE: A Quick Start guide to using the HP Licensing website is available from the Help link at the top of the page. Obtaining the license 19

3. If you save the LTU as a file, sftp it into the HP Backup system's repository directory. Using Linux sftp Admin@<IP_Address> cd repository put <LTU>.dat exit Using a Windows sftp client Ensure the File Protocol is set to SFTP, not SCP. Login as Admin. Applying the license Copy <LTU>.dat to repository. IMPORTANT: When connecting multiple capacity expansion kits to an HP StoreOnce Backup system, you must add all licenses before expanding the capacity of the HP StoreOnce Backup system. The storage expansion process will fail if there are any attached expansion kits for which a license has not been applied. 1. Access the StoreOnce CLI from an SSH terminal using an SSH client application (freely available on the internet) using any configured IP address for the appliance and provide an Administrator user name: ssh <username>@<ip address> At the next prompt, enter the Administrator's password. NOTE: The default user name and password are Admin, admin. 2. Check that the LTU is stored within the repository using StoreOnce CLI command: system show repository. Look for the <LTU>.dat file. 3. Apply the license using one of the following StoreOnce CLI commands: license load <LTU>.dat to load a license that has been saved as a file image. The file image must exist in the Backup system's repository directory. license add <string> to key in the license directly. If you used email or a temporary file, cut and paste the string exactly as you obtained it from the HP Licensing website. Entering the LTU manually is not advised. NOTE: The key is specific to the HP StoreOnce Backup system to which it applies. It cannot be transferred. 4. To ensure that the license has been applied successfully, run the StoreOnce CLI command: license show Completing the RAID expansion NOTE: All Capacity Expansion Kits that have been licensed are included in the expansion process. Be sure to apply the licenses for all kits before running the expansion process. Before the first disk expansion, there is one pool and associated volume for the each disk enclosure. Hardware Storage Clusters Storage Cluster 1 Pool (C1_P1) andhardware Storage Clusters Storage Cluster 2 Pool (C4_P1) if a second disk enclosure is installed. NOTE: When you expand capacity, additional pools are created for each set of disks. As there is a separate Storage Cluster for each disk enclosure and associated RAID controller, the pools under Storage Cluster 1 are expanded first. This is the first disk enclosure that is attached to the RAID card in PCI slot 1 and the pools are identified from Pool (C1_P1) to Pool (C1_P6). The second disk enclosure is attached to the RAID card in PCI slot 4 and the pools are identified from Pool (C4_P1) to Pool (C4_P6) and listed under Storage Cluster 2. The status for the appropriate Storage Cluster and Pool will show as Degraded until parity initialization completes. 1. Open the ssh application and log into the IP address for the StoreOnce Management Console using the Administrator account. 2. # 3. After the LUNs have been created, parity initialization starts. This can take up to 10 hours to complete, see Planning for the Capacity Expansion (page 4). Log on to the StoreOnce User Interface to check the status of this process. You need to check the Pools and Volumes information for each storage cluster. There are up to 6 pools for each storage cluster. Expand the Hardware tree to find the pool that is appropriate for this capacity expansion. To check the progress of parity initialization, expand each degraded pool to check the status of the Volumes. The following example shows the Hardware tree expanded to view the information associated with the Volume in Pool C1_P2. 4. Wait for the LUN creation process to complete, then run the following StoreOnce CLI command in order to format the storage LUN with file system segments: hardware add storage IMPORTANT: If you run the hardware add storage command before the LUN creation process completes, the amount of time required to complete parity initialization cannot be predicted because it depends upon the workload of the system. It may take several days to complete and performance will be impaired. 5. This command will expand the filesystem to use the storage. The process can take up to four hours to complete. 6. Monitor the expansion using StoreOnce CLI commands. Once the storage is available, performance will return to normal as long as parity initialization was allowed to complete before the hardware add storage command was run. Troubleshooting Discover storage fails The hardware discover storage command will fail if: A previous discover storage command is already running. There is no storage to be added. There are insufficient expansion licenses applied to allow the entire expansion to complete (in this case, no expansion will take place until sufficient licenses are present for all added storage). The storage is installed in the wrong disk bay locations for this expansion set. There are any failed or predictive fail disks in either the existing or newly added storage. The SAS cabling to the disk enclosures is incorrect. There are foreign logical drives or volumes already present on the attached storage. These are identified as an unsupported or invalid storage configuration and the dev-id of the volume is provided in the error message. It is necessary to delete the storage, as shown in the following example:. Add storage fails # hardware discover storage This command takes several minutes to complete execution. Command Successful The hardware add storage command will fail if: There is an outstanding discover or add command in progress.
