Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver Installation and Configuration Instructions These instructions, and the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver, are for use with a Varian Modular HPLC System only. Do not use the Varian Modular HPLC Driver CD (part number 8510253600) if you are installing a Varian 900-LC Series HPLC system. Release date: 10 th September 2009 This CD will install the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver which contains the following files: Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator (ModularConfigurator.exe), version number 1.0.1.0 Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver, version number 1.0.0.23 Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver IMS Service, version number 1.0.0.23 Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Console, version number 1.0.6.21761 With the exception of the Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Console software, the files found on this CD are to be used with Galaxie Chromatography Software, SP2b and greater only. Please ensure that you have Galaxie Chromatography Software installed on your computer before installing this CD. Operating Systems Supported System Requirements The Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver is supported on either Windows XP with at least Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Enterprise or Business operating systems. When running Galaxie Chromatography Software or the Varian 440-LC Console software, a PC with a minimum of 1 GB of RAM for Windows XP and 2 GB of RAM for Windows Vista and a processor speed of greater than 2.8 GHz is recommended. Supported Devices for the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver The following devices are currently supported by the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver. If you have devices other than those listed below, you will need to configure your system using both the Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator and the individual LC Drivers within Galaxie Configuration Manager. Varian 210/218 and SD-1 pumps and CIM modules on the pumps Varian 325/335, 2100/2100-Ice and 380/385-LC ELSD, 356-LC RI detectors Varian 800 or 850 MIB Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Manual injector Installing the Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver and Configurator or the 440-LC Fraction Collector Console Installation involves: Installing the Varian Modular HPLC Galaxie Driver and the Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator or the Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Console software Configuring a new or existing system if you are using Galaxie Chromatography Software The following instructions will guide you through the installation of the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver and Configurator or the 440-LC Console software. To successfully install and execute the Varian Modular HPLC System Driver, Galaxie Chromatography software version 1.9 SP2b needs to be installed. It is recommended that you also read the Late Breaking News document that came with your software. The Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Console software is only required when you are not using Galaxie software to control the fraction collector. To install the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver or 440-LC Console software: Page 2 of 6 1. Place the Varian Modular HPLC System driver CD into the CD-ROM drive of the PC. The installation procedure will automatically start. 2. If Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 SP1 is not present or is a different version than the one shipped with the driver software, you will be prompted to install the program(s). Click Install. It may take several minutes. 3. Click Next on the Welcome screen. 4. After reading the licensing agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement. The Next button will become active. Click Next. 5. If Galaxie Chromatography Software is present on your computer, you will be prompted to enter the user name, organization and Galaxie Chromatography Software serial number on the Customer Information screen. If a Varian LC Galaxie serial number is already present on your HPLC system, the installer will automatically enter it in. Otherwise, you can find the serial number on the serial number card or on a label on the CD case that came with your software. If Galaxie Chromatography Software is not present on your computer and you are only installing the Varian
440-LC Console, you will not be asked for your user name, organization or serial number. Click Verify (if required) and then click Next. 6. Select the features you want installed on the Custom Setup screen by clicking the icon to the left of the feature name. For information about the installation options, click Help. Click Next. 7. Click Install. Click Finish when the installation is complete. If you installed the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver, the Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator will launch to guide you through configuring your system. For information on how to use the Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Console, please see the Varian 440-LC Fraction Collector Operation Manual (publication number 8510252500) and the mouse-over Help tips in the Console software. Configuring a Modular HPLC System in the Galaxie Chromatography Software After installing the Varian Modular HPLC Driver the Varian Modular HPLC Driver Configurator should launch automatically. If it does not launch automatically, or you chose to create a system at a later date, you can find the Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator icon on your computer desktop or in Start > Programs > Galaxie > Varian Modular HPLC System Configurator. There are two ways to configure a system: Create a new system used when no system currently exists using the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver Update an existing system used only if there is an existing system previously configured with the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver Creating a New System To create a new system: 1. Select Create a new system. 2. Select PC, MIB 850 configuration or MIB 800 static configuration for your hardware connection. Use the table below for the appropriate procedure based on your communication requirements. PC MIB 850 Static IP MIB 850 DHCP MIB 800 Static Click a. Select Next. Static. a. Click Search for MIB 850 to display a list of available MIB modules. b. Select the appropriate MIB. c. Select Static. d. Enter the IP address, Gateway and Netmask. e. Click Update to save the information in the MIB. f. Click Reboot to reboot the MIB. g. Click Next. a. Click Search for MIB 850 to display a list of available MIB modules. b. Select the appropriate MIB. c. Select DHCP. d. Click Update to save the information in the MIB. e. Click Reboot to reboot the MIB. f. Click Next. b. Enter the IP address, Gateway and Netmask. c. Page 4 of 6 4. Select the correct pumping system type from the Flows drop-down menu. 5. Select the correct Com port from the drop-down menu. 6. For each pump in your system, select the correct RS-422 Unit ID and the correct model from the drop-down menus. 7. Select 440-LC Fraction Collector and the correct Com port if one is present in your system. 8. Select Manual injector if one is present in your system. 9. If a CIM module is present in your 210/218 or SD-1 pump, select Analog input, the correct RS-422 Unit ID and pump model the CIM module is located in. 10. Select the appropriate detectors. If you have a Varian 325 or 335 either enter the IP address of the detector or click Find to find all available detectors on the network. Select the correct detector from the list and then click OK to return to the configuration dialog box. 11. Click Create System. 12. Click OK and then click Close. Your system will automatically be created and will be available to use once you open up the Galaxie Software. Refer to the Varian Modular HPLC System Help for detailed instructions on using the Varian Modular HPLC System Driver with the Galaxie Chromatography Software. If you need to add device(s) not shown in the Supported Devices for the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver section on Page 2 of this instruction sheet, go to Installing Additional Modules on Page 5. Modifying an Existing System Follow the instructions in this section to add a device to an existing system if: Your device is on the supported device list in the Supported Devices for the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver section on Page 2. If your device is not in this list go to Installing Additional Modules on Page 5. You have an existing system that is already using the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver. If your existing system is not using the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver, go to Creating a New System on Page 3. To add an 800 or 850 MIB you will to create a new system using the Varian Modular HPLC Configurator. To modify an existing system: 1. Select Update existing system and then select your system from the drop-down menu. 2. Click Next. 3. Select the new device from the options shown on the screen. See Steps 4-10 in Creating a New System for more information. 4. Click Update System. 5. Click OK and then click Close. Your system will automatically be updated and will be available to use once you open up the Galaxie software. Refer to the Varian Modular HPLC System Help for detailed instructions on using the Varian Modular HPLC System Driver with the Galaxie Chromatography software. The Help can be accessed using the link in the software or by clicking Start > Programs > Galaxie > Help > Varian Modular HPLC System Help.
Installing Additional Devices in the Galaxie Chromatography Software Devices not listed in Supported Devices for the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver section on Page 2 need to be added separately. To add them to a Galaxie controlled HPLC system you will need to modify the new system in Galaxie Configuration Manager, and add each additional driver individually. To install additional modules: 1. Configure your system following the instructions listed in the previous section titled Configuring a Modular HPLC System for Galaxie. 2. If you do not have them present on your system already, install the Varian LC drivers following Steps 3-7 below. Otherwise, skip to Step 8. 3. Insert the Galaxie or Varian LC CD into your CD drive. The CD browser will start automatically. If it does not, launch the browser by running Install.exe from the root directory of the CD. 4. From the CD browser click Install Varian Drivers. 5. Click Install Varian LC. 6. Click Next, read and accept the License Agreement and enter your Varian LC serial number in the corresponding field. The serial number is provided on your driver serial number card or on the Galaxie CD and is different from the Galaxie serial number. If you have already installed the Varian Modular HPLC System Galaxie Driver, you will not need to enter in another serial number. The serial number is case sensitive. 7. Click Next and then click OK when prompted. Click on Finish at the end of the installation. 8. Click Start > Programs > Galaxie > Galaxie Configuration Manager and then login. Depending on your device, you may need to configure the communication protocols. Consult your device operating manual or the Galaxie Installation Guide for instructions on how to configure the device. For example, for an additional 210/218/SD-1 pump, you will need to select Communication engine configuration and select the software protocol before configuring your system. 9. Click Systems in the Organization section of the browser. 10. Right-click the system to be modified in the Systems section and then select Edit. 11. Click Next on the System (Properties edition) window, and then Next on the System Name and Groups/Projects window. 12. Click Add. 13. Select the required driver by choosing them one at a time from the Device Type drop-down menu and then click OK. Repeat until all required devices have been selected. 14. Click OK. 15. Click Yes to configure your system. There may be a delay while Galaxie configures your system. 16. Click the module icon on the left side of the Configure system window. Enter the required parameters, if applicable. See your device operation manual or the Galaxie Installation Guide for more information. 17. Click OK when done. Page 5 of 6
18. If you have added a ProStar 400, 410, 420 or 430 Autosampler you must rearrange the devices to sit underneath the autosampler in Galaxie Configuration Manager. (a) (b) Click Systems. Find the new system in the Stations/Systems list. Selecting one at a time, drag all detector channels, CIM, MIB signal and fraction collector items onto the ProStar 400, 410, 420 or 430 device in the list. You will need to drag each item onto the 400, 410, 420 or 430 device twice for the item to move. Select and drag all detector channels, CIM, MIB signals and fraction collector items twice in a row onto the ProStar 410 Autosampler device to move them under the autosampler. Figure 1. When the system has stopped, right-click the system again and select Start. 20. Close Galaxie Configuration Manager. Your system is now available to use in the Galaxie Chromatography Software. Recommended Computer Systems Varian, Inc. uses, and recommends Dell computers. Although our software is designed to work on any correctly configured computer, all testing and evaluation is completed using Dell computers only.
