Software Package Installation Instructions

1 Introduction Novar provides an automatic installation package that involves reading simple, easy-to-follow instructions on each screen and clicking on the appropriate options. This document provides detailed instructions intended to accompany the automatic installation. NOTE! When the Novar software package is installed, the Novar Software End-User License Agreement is also installed. A copy is included on the user s computer in the Shortcuts screen as a PDF. During the software installation process, a copy of the agreement will be displayed and users will be prompted to agree to its terms before the software can be installed. Once the software is installed, the user is bound by this agreement. Installation Package Options Novar s software (ESS32, iscope, Download Files) is designed to run in Microsoft Windows XP PRO SP2 or Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 operating systems (all of which are referred to as Windows throughout this document). Detailed information about the individual software programs can be found in the Documents folder on the Novar Software Package CD or in the iscope program s Help system. Adobe Acrobat Reader software is required to view this documentation. An installable copy of this software is also available on the CD. System Requirements The following hardware and software requirements must be met, regardless of the software program being installed: VGA monitor ( dots-per-inch resolution recommended) Microsoft Windows XP PRO SP2 or Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 Novar s PC Interface Key (PIK) Hardware and software requirements for specific software are listed below. iscope Recommended Hardware Specifications Processor: Pentium III 750 MHz or better RAM: 512MB or better Hard Disk: 32 GB or better REV. 2 ESS32 Recommended Hardware Specifications Processor: Pentium II 300 MHz or better RAM: 512MB or better Hard Disk: 40 MB or better NOTE! Increased hardware capabilities might be required if multiple applications are to be run. For additional information, contact your authorized Novar representative for a copy of the current White Papers. Communication Options Installing the Software The installed software supports the following communications options: Processing Modem (Phone Line or Direct-Connect) S-modem (Hayes-compatible smart modem) Ethernet NovarNet Direct Connect (RS-232) USB (Lingo XE and Envoi XE; see Installing the Software, 5 below) Windows should already be installed on the personal computer on which the software is to be installed, and the installer should have some knowledge of the Windows environment to facilitate installation. The software must be installed using the Windows and Novar installation package. It cannot be installed by copying the files. The files are compressed and must be decompressed using the Novar installation routine. NOTE! Administrator rights or privileges are required if the software is being installed for the first time. The following procedure should be used to install the software. 1 Make sure that all other Windows programs are closed before proceeding with the installation. 2 Insert the Software Package CD into the CD-ROM drive on the computer. The Software Package CD provides an autorun feature that automatically initiates installation once the CD is inserted in the CD-ROM drive. It might take a few seconds for the first screen ( SW Installation or View Documents? ) to appear. NOTE! If the CD drive autorun configuration is disabled, browse to the root directory of the CD and run Setup.exe. continued Rev. H 3/14/08

3 3 Click on the Run the Software Package installation? option and on Next to advance to the Welcome screen or on the Browse the CD Documents folder? option to open the Documents folder. NOTE! Selecting the Browse the CD Documents folder? option will stop the installation process. The installation will have to be restarted for the software to be installed. The Documents folder is always available on the CD and can be viewed at any time by inserting the CD and selecting the Browse option. 4 Click on Next in the Welcome screen to continue with the installation (if all Windows programs have been closed) or on Cancel to stop the installation. If any Windows programs remain open, they must be closed and the installation restarted. If users continue with the installation, the License Agreement and prompt will appear. Users must click on Yes twice to accept the terms of the agreement and continue with the installation. Clicking on No will abort the installation. 5 Click in the box next to each application that is to be installed and on Next to proceed. If ESS32 is selected, a Question popup screen will appear, asking if the machine will be used for a local (USB cable) connection to XE executive modules. If the user selects Yes, two instances of ESS32 will be installed. The second instance will have its own shortcut labeled ESS32 USB. At this point, a screen will appear for the user to select environment variables (refer to the Environment Variables section of this document for an explanation). Follow the prompts. 6 Follow the prompts, as appropriate, during the installation or update of the PC Interface Key (PIK) support files until a Finished message appears. 7 Make sure the correct drive and directory or folder are shown for each application being installed. NOTE! Novar recommends that the default folders be used. To use a different drive or folder, use the Browse feature to find another destination or delete the default drive and/or folder and type the correct drive and/or folder name. Click on Next to confirm that the correct applications, drive, and folder have been selected. Click on Next to start installing the files to the selected locations or on Back to change the selections. continued Rev. H 3/14/08 3

4 8 (Applies to iscope only) Click on one of the following options, as appropriate, to select the communication method for each COM port and click on Next: None Processing Modem/Phone-Line Processing Modem/Direct-Connect S-Modem NovarNet Direct Connect (RS-232) 9 Click on Yes at the next window if the configuration includes Ethernet communications or on No if it does not include Ethernet and then click on Next. If ESS32 and iscope are being installed at the same time, the ESS32 Configuration screen will open at this point. Select the appropriate communication options and click on OK and Yes to save the selections. 10 Click on the appropriate option if Acrobat Reader is to be installed. The user will only be asked if Acrobat Reader is to be installed if the program is not already installed on the computer. NOTE! Novar s software CD contains a Documents folder that provides electronic portable document file or PDF copies of various Novar documents. Acrobat Reader is used to read the PDF files. The Acrobat Reader program can be installed when the software is installed or at a later date. The program is in the Documents folder on the CD. 11 Select Yes at the Would you like to enable the newly installed download files? prompt. 12 Respond to the Would you like to view the Read Me file? prompt. 13 Click on Finish to close the installation program. The installation program automatically creates a desktop icon that opens a screen offering options for all of the Windows-based programs it has installed Rev. H 3/14/08

5 Environment Variables An administrative user installing the software on a workstation for the first time will be asked to select environment variables. The options available are explained when the following information screen (Figure 1) appears. Figure 1. Information screen explaining the environment variables options When the user clicks on OK, the Select Environment-Variable Conditions screen (Figure 2) is displayed for the administrator to select the appropriate option. 6 At this point, the administrator clicks on the appropriate option and on Next for the installation to continue. Following the installation, if the variables need to be changed at any point, the following procedure can be used. 1 Use the appropriate method to display the environment variables: Windows 2000 Click on the Start button to display a popup menu. Move the cursor to and click on Settings/Control Panel/System. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on the Environment Variables option button to display the screen shown in Figure 4. Windows XP Click on the Start button to display a popup menu. Move the cursor to and click on My Computer/System Tasks/View System Information. Click on Advanced/Environment Variables. 2 Click on the appropriate variables and options to set the variables. NOTE! User variables will override system variables. Figure 3. 7 Installing the PC Interface Key Once the software files have been installed, one of the following types of PC Interface Keys (a PIK) must be installed before iscope or ESS32 can be used: Parallel Port (DB25) PIK PCMCIA PIK USB PIK Instructions are provided below. NOTE! If an iscope PIK is used, refer to Novar s iscope Site License PIK Installation Instructions, available in the Documents folder on Novar s Software Package CD. Parallel Port (DB25) PIK The Parallel Port (DB25) PIK should only be used in systems where an LPT1 port has been configured. 1 Disconnect any printer cable that is connected to the computer s parallel port. 2 Connect the PIK to the parallel port with the arrow on the PIK (the end with the pins, Figure 5) pointing toward the computer. 3 Tighten the locking screws on the PIK. 4 Connect the cable from the printer to the other end of the PIK. This end of the PIK has 25 holes that provide a plug-in connection for the pins on the printer s cable. Figure 5. PC interface key (PIK) The printer is not affected by the PIK installation Rev. 8 PCMCIA or USB PIK Once the software is installed, the PCMCIA or USB PIK needs to be plugged into the appropriate port. NOTE! The Hardlock PCMCIA PIK is designed to be used in a notebook computer. When the PIK is plugged into an available PCMCIA or USB port, a Wizard dialog screen should open, perform the appropriate tasks, and close. A USB hub can be used. No further user involvement should be required. Follow the prompts that appear. iscope and NovarNet are registered trademarks of Novar.
