The Customer Agreement If you have not already done so, please read the Customer Agreement. The full copy is posted on our website at www.northlc.com. The agreement contains important information on usage of your Viasat System including the Viasat Data Allowance Policy and the Northland Connect Acceptable Use Policy. It describes how you, the subscriber, are required to have updated Anti-Virus software installed on your computer. The Customer Agreement also describes the electronic billing and payment process as well as amounts due for a partial month s service. Managing Your Account You don t have to carve out time of your busy schedule to call Technical Support to change your password or to check your account information! You can manage your own account by using the Subscriber AdminTool. This tool will allow you to: change passwords, download pop-up blocking software, set auto-reply messages, set FrontPage access, forward email accounts to other accounts, delete accumulated email, review your usage and settings and print or email account information. To access your Subscriber Portal go to: www.northlc.com (You may want to add our website to your favorites list or even make it your home page). Once you are there click on Customer Login and then choose from the list labeled Manage My Account. This will take you to the northlc.ruralportal.net screen or [domain].ruralportal.net. Enter your User name and Password in the appropriate fields on the login page and click the Log In button. Remember your name and password are case sensitive. Please make sure that you enter them exactly as when the account was created or last modified. A Subscriber Portal User Guide is also posted on the www.northlc.com website. Look for it along with other helpful subscriber guides by clicking on the Customer Login, then on the right hand side, User Guides. 3

Managing Your Account cont d If you think you are having performance problems, call the Technical Support line first. If Tech Support determines that there is an equipment related problem, they will create a trouble ticket that will go to the Sales and Installation Department for follow-up. Remember, speeds may vary depending on the traffic and time of day. If you do lots of downloading of large files, music or file sharing, you may want to consider a larger package. Check out our packages on our website. Webmail We know there are times when you are on the move but don t want to be disconnected from friends and family or your business. That s where Webmail comes in. With Webmail you can access email from any computer with an internet connection. You will have the same features as other popular email software such as Microsoft Outlook Express. A Webmail User Guide is posted on the www.northlc.com website under User Guides for you to review online and print if you wish. You can Login to Webmail by entering http://webmail.(your Domain).com on your browser. Your domain name must be the one officially assigned to you. You can find a list on our website under current customers. Please note this is not a www address enter it exactly as you see above. Once you are there enter your user name and password. 4

Anti-Virus Protection We take security very seriously at Northland Connect, and we make every effort to ensure the Viasat network is secure. Individual customers on our network also have a big role to play in staying safe online, which means using things like strong passwords that you change regularly, firewalls, and antivirus software. Which antivirus software should I use? There are plenty of good ones out there, but a general rule is one that you pay for will probably be a more robust tool that s updated more frequently than a free one. It s important to protect your computer from viruses, especially because viruses can send and recieve data without your permission, which may use your data allowance. Data Allowance Policy As is standard with other Internet Service Providers, Viasat ensures that its service operates at optimum speeds for all of its customers. Since Viasat is a shared network, we have a Data Allowance Policy to ensure that extraordinary usage by a few customers doesn t negatively affect the normal usage of other customers. For the vast majority of users, the Data Allowance Policy will have no effect on their usage. For a few very heavy bandwidth users, the system may restrict their bandwidth and therefore their speed. We offer multiple service levels that accommodate most users needs. The policy can be viewed on our website at www.northlc.com. Virtually Unlimited Many of our packages have virtually unlimited data. It is important to note that after utilizing your priority GB data which varies by package, your data may be prioritized behind other customers. 5

SmartHub SmartHub offers both a web and mobile application that allows customers to manage all aspects of their billing account. Customers can view their bill, make online payments, update automatic payment information, can change log-in information, manage billing notifications, and contact us. The free SmartHub mobile app can be found in the customer s preferred app store. Two Billing Reminders Prorated Bills You may have noticed that your first bill was prorated and may be more than your base package. Much like a cell phone you are billed one month in advance. If your service starts in the middle of a billing cycle your first bill will reflect the balance of that month plus the next month. This is a one time occurrence. User Names and Electronic Billing When you become a customer of Northland Connect you were assigned a user name that ended in northlc.com. Some customers have elected to use a different email address. In order to receive your electronic billing and our monthly newsletter or other notices we need to know what address you are using or your former provider assigned user name. If the email address you are using is something other than your Northland Connect email address, please call 866-567-1919. JULY 6 8 2014

Protection Plan If you lease your equipment from us your lease fee includes a Protection Plan which covers eligible service calls. A full description of the Protection Plan can be found on our website. If you have purchased your equipment we strongly recommend you add our Protection Plan. There is a low monthly cost and it covers service calls and equipment replacement/repairs. A full copy of the Protection Plan can be found on our website under current customer. How to Maximize your Data Usage To get the most out of your Viasat Internet service from Northland Connect and stay within the bounds of your data allowance, consider these suggestions: 1. Check your usage regularly Make it a habit to check your data usage regularly throughout your billing cycle especially in the first few months of service. This helps you avoid surprises and gives you a feel for your pattern of usage and how you and other users in your household may need to adjust it. To view your Usage Meter, log into your account through the Customer Portal. 2. Limit video time Streaming and downloading video consumes more data than almost any other online activity. Pass that fact along to other users on your home network, then go one step further and install a Flash blocker on your browser to prevent video from loading automatically. 3. Adjust video settings Reduce video data consumption by lowering your screen resolution, an option available on Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and most other video streaming sites. Read more in our FAQ section of our website. 7

4. Keep outside users out Spyware, malware and other programs can consume data without your knowledge. Use software or a program to detect such threats and keep them out. Plus, be sure to have your wireless router password protected so your neighbors aren t getting a free data ride on your service! 5. Adjust your email settings A simple change to your email settings can enable you to pre-approve or prevent data-heavy image displays and automatic attachment downloads. Just find the settings menu on whichever email program you re using, and choose the correct option. 6. Check file sizes before emailing Before hitting send, check the size of photos and other attachments, and if possible, downsize them. Downsize photos before sending them to 500 kb or less with Mac s iphoto or Windows programs like Windows Live Photo Gallery or Gimp or Google s Picasa. Consider using links instead of emailing a lengthy document. For instance, include a YouTube video link over a data-heavy PowerPoint with video. 7. Turn off auto-play video features Sites like Facebook will load and play videos automatically, so turning off this feature can save a lot of data usage. Disabling auto-play won t prevent you from watching videos. You can simply click on any video you want to watch and it will start playing almost immediately. In order to disable and/or limit the autoplay feature on any device, navigate to the Settings Video for the relevant application, such as Facebook. 8. Keep an eye on Chromebook computers. Since these run on Google Chrome as the operating system and are always connected to the internet, Chromebooks will likely use more data than other devices just to perform normal functions. 8

9. Manage software updates. All kinds of applications and apps require software updates from time to time; some happen automatically without you realizing it. Some of these are minor updates that don t use up much data, but some can be quite large. An OS update for Windows or Mac can be several gigabytes, for example. 10. Monitor Over the Top (OTT) video devices like Roku and Apple TV. These are connected devices that focus on streaming video, so having one connected to your Viasat service can mean you ll go through a lot of data quickly. Be sure you ve got a data plan that can keep up with this level of streaming. Last resort: If you re consistently bumping up against your cap, Buy More data on our portal. Or you can move to a Viasat plan with a larger data cap (there s never a charge to change plans). Tips and FAQ s Our website www.northlc.com has a section called Tips and FAQ s. There is a wealth of information here you can access. Topics covered include: Data Usage Limits How to make the best use and maximize your data Streaming Video What is meant by Virtually Unlimited How to Create a Home Network 9
