BusinessCompute Good morning or good afternoon, depending on where you are, and welcome to today s live channel chat on Business Compute Forum. BusinessCompute I m Peter Krass, the BCF site s editor. I ll be your moderator today. BusinessCompute Today we re chatting about the new Intel Xeon E5 v3 processor family and what it means for the channel. BusinessCompute Our guest today are James Vogeltanz, Product Marketing Engineer, Datacenter Marketing Group - Channels Marketing, Intel and David Borden, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer, Datacenter Marketing Group - Channels Marketing, Intel. BusinessCompute Also, we are giving away a very cool Dell Venue tablet to one lucky person attending this chat. BusinessCompute Please note: You do not have to register to participate in this chat. But if you want a specific screen name to appear, or you want to be included in the tablet drawing, then you do need to register. BusinessCompute Any questions about that? BusinessCompute OK. To start, James and David will answer a few questions from me. Then, after about 10-15 minutes of our semi-formal interview, Thomas will be happy to take your questions. JamesVogeltanz The Intel Xeon processor E5-2603 v3 starts around $200 BusinessCompute It will be! BusinessCompute Before we begin, any questions about our chat format? BusinessCompute OK, good. Then let s get started. Again, please hold your questions for James Vogeltanz and David Borden of Intel until we get to the Q&A portion of the chat. BusinessCompute James, to start, please tell us about your job roles and duties? JamesVogeltanz I handle marketing for the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family for our worldwide channel JamesVogeltanz Today we will focus on The Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v3 launched last month BusinessCompute So James, from a high-level channel partner s perspective, what s most important about the new Xeon processor family? JamesVogeltanz Most important thing to know is that this new 'v3' processor will have new motherboards and systems.. JamesVogeltanz The previous v1/v2 of the Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 family are not supported on these new boards. The major new feature of the v3 is support for DDR4 memory technology BusinessCompute Can you say a bit about *why* the decision was made to require a new motherboard and chipset?
JamesVogeltanz Look for new boards and system from Intel as well as other board manufacturers and solution providers now over the course of the next few months JamesVogeltanz Other than DDR4 support, the new platforms also support new power management technology that integrates some functions of power managment on the cpu package JamesVogeltanz This is one of the reasons a new socket is required BusinessCompute I think folks would also like to hear more about DDR4 memory. What are some of the benefits? JamesVogeltanz New power management capabilities allow each core within the cpu to be power managed separately vs. all cores needing to running at the same frequency/power JamesVogeltanz DDR4 brings speed increases up to DDR4-2133. DDR3 speeds capped out for servers at 1600/1866 depending on the system BusinessCompute That new power mgmt...does that help lower overall power consumption? rossb2b-1 what kind of power savings is that likely to yeild? JamesVogeltanz This brings additional bandwidth not available with DDR3 technology JamesVogeltanz Also, the power consumption per DIMM is less with DDR4 than with DDR3, lowering overall system power BusinessCompute OK, I'd like to open the floor to questions for James. Questions, anyone? JamesVogeltanz Yes, overall power consumption is improved vs. previous generation systems, efficiency gains of ~24% measured with skus of similar price points rossb2b-1 what kind of power savings is the new core power management features likely to yield? noelphx how small of an environment do you see the individual core management being effective in? JamesVogeltanz Results vary by workload of course, the biggest benefits will be seen on systems with moderate workloads. Systems that are fully 'maxed out' won't see as much difference rossb2b-1 any new virtualization features baked in? DavidBorden Hello everybody! BusinessCompute Hi, David, welcome! JamesVogeltanz Typically, larger datacenters will be customers that will take advantage of power management features at this level JamesVogeltanz We do have new virtualization features jralexan1 this may get too deep into the weeds, but, if you do a processor affinity for an application thread, is it possible that the core that thread is running on may go to full power, but the other cores stay at station-keeping? DavidBorden Each core can run at a different P state and C state with E5 2600 v3
JamesVogeltanz Cache quality of service is one new feature that allows the hypervisor to see if one VM on a processor is being 'cache noisy' and be able to isolate those VMs JamesVogeltanz so as to lessen the impact to other VMs on the same cpu jralexan1 sweet (to both points) DavidBorden Correct and it allows the hypervisor to see into the Cache for better excution of commands and load ballancing as well JamesVogeltanz There are many additional technical enhancements that lower the overheard of doing virtualization at the micro level rossb2b-1 QOS for caching. anything configurable or does it work in the background? JamesVogeltanz All of these fall under our Intel VT brand name DavidBorden There are several advanced VM features that we have released in the last two processors. There has been a big focus on E5v3 to improve VM efficiency tommathh When will we see the new processor in OEM servers like Lenovo JamesVogeltanz works in the background with your system management of virtualizaiton environment DavidBorden We also support VMCS Shadowing as well JamesVogeltanz While we can't announce our OEM partner launch dates, expect many OEM systems that support the Xeon E5 2600 v3 starting in Q4 DavidBorden Nested Virtualization allows a root VMM to support guest VMMs DavidBorden VM Control Structure (VMCS) Shadowing increases efficiency by reducing virtualization latency BusinessCompute-1 Can you talk about AVX 2.0? From what I've read, it's part of getting the higher workload improvements? jralexan1 lost my brain for a minute, please to define 'VMM' JamesVogeltanz Yes, AVX 2.0 offers acceleration of 256 bit integer instructions JamesVogeltanz AVX 1.0 did the same for 256 bit floating point instructions DavidBorden Another VM features is Extended Page Table A/D bits, which enables efficient Live Migration and Fault Tolerance JamesVogeltanz Some workloads can see up to 2x the performance if they can optimize for that instructions...workloads like redering and financial analysis DavidBorden Virtual Machine Manager DavidBorden Same as Hypervisor
DavidBorden one of the main benefits of AVX 2.0 is that this is the first time we have brought in Interger accelerations which will benefit business class applications! jralexan1 do we have an introductory price point, yet? JamesVogeltanz The Intel Xeon processor E5-2603 v3 starts around $200 BusinessCompute Can you tell us about Node Manager 3.0, a feature of the cpus. What is it, and how does it help with power use? JamesVogeltanz you can visit ark.intel.com to see pricing and all skus available johnpeele79 You mentioned Hyper-V briefly, are there reasons, other than personal choices. that would encourage a preference of VMWare -vs- Hyper-V to be stated here? JamesVogeltanz Unfortunately, I have to drop but will leave you in good hands with David Borden ustreamer-59351 configuators will be updated and ready when? BusinessCompute Thanks, James. johnpeele79 Now that Intel has decided not to offer WorkStaion / DeskTop MotherBoards what is going to happen with the conceptual idea of putting the McAfee AntiVirus Protection Chip on the MotherBoard? DavidBorden John, re your question regarding VMMs ustreamer-44561 will intel stop making comsumer cpu s / DavidBorden Both HyperV and VMware are great, well proven platforms. Each has its own benefits and we work with both companies to make sure their software is optimised for our newest processors and chipsets DavidBorden HyperV has been adding some great features lately. Both are very good. ustreamer-2104 What is required to register for the the tablet? DavidBorden John, remember we still design and mfg the processor and chipsets. Those are the key pieces that allow us to design in security features to key servers and systems safe. We are doing lots of exciting work in this area and is a major focus of Intel. DavidBorden One of the features we added in Xeon E5 2600 v2 was a random number generator and a main feature of AVX 1.0 DavidBorden Re will Intel stop making consumer CPUs... No, that is a high priority. BusinessCompute OK, thanks everyone for attending today s chat. I hope that while you re here, you ll take a look around our Business Compute Forum site: BusinessCompute www.businesscomputeforum.com
BusinessCompute Later today, we will post a transcript of today s chat. So please tell your friends and colleagues who missed today s session that they can still read the transcript. tommathh Thank you for the session jralexan1 yes, thanks BusinessCompute Thanks to James Vogeltanz and David Borden of Intel, for being our guests today. DavidBorden We brought the voltage regulator onto the Die itself with E5 v3. What this allows is incredibly tight control of the CPU and system power. The fact that our CPUs now support per core P- states, and the ability to change the frequency of both the core and uncore portion of the CPU is awesome! BusinessCompute And thanks to you, our audience, for attending this Business Compute Forum live channel chat. Have a great rest of your day!
