(LEVEL 3) Learning outcomes By completing this unit candidates will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of planning, drafting, developing and creating a technically complex DTP publication to meet a given design brief and the different needs of a target audience. Candidates will produce evidence to meet the unit assessment objectives in order to show that they understand how to: research and plan a publication to match a design brief and target audience create and apply a template and style sheet to a publication research and source text and images to use in the final documents select and use advanced tools in desktop publishing software to create a set of documents prepare documents for distribution and save in suitable file formats produce an evaluation report and document describing the remaining stages of producing multiple copies of the publication using commercial printing processes. It is anticipated that a candidate will require 60 guided learning hours to complete this unit. Assessment objectives 1 Research and plan a set of documents to meet a given client brief 2 Create page layouts for each document Knowledge, understanding and skills Research a range of professionally produced publications from different organisations with different end users materials (text/graphics) to be included in the publication to match the given design brief from the client Planning to include purpose of documents target audience elements required in the documents eg logos, colour scheme, specific fonts sketches of layouts for each document visual signposts eg artwork, titles, frames, boxes, borders selection of the most appropriate software Create a template, which can be used for different documents, to match client brief, and consider corporate image. To include, as necessary: font face, size, emphasis, alignment and leading colour schemes character, line and paragraph spacing (continued overleaf) OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT 1

Assessment objectives 2 cont. Create page layouts for each document 3 Develop the documents Knowledge, understanding and skills indents and tabs bullets page size and margin setup columns grids paragraph styles graphics eg lines Create documents, using the designs created in A01 and templates created in A02, by: following page sketches layering text and images Text: supplied by client using a text editor to amend the text before importing into the publishing software composed by desktop publisher imported into DTP package written directly into document linking text formatting, spacing, embellishment, styles, text wrap/flow, text orientation, alignment, dropped and raised capitals Images: supplied by client imported into DTP package from clipart, scanner and digital camera created/edited/manipulated by desktop publisher drawing tools to create complex shapes eg 2D/3D shapes positioning add images as watermarks group/ungroup objects Copyfit publications: bleed over the edge of the page consider white space using hyphenation effectively amend leading/kerning consider widows/orphans Produce publications: annotated drafts automating tasks eg creating tables/tables of contents/index automatically, bullets 2 OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT

Assessment objectives 4 Prepare publication for distribution and save in suitable file formats 5 Produce an evaluation report and document describing the remaining stages of producing multiple copies of the publication using commercial printing processes Knowledge, understanding and skills Follow standard stages for producing a commercial document: proof read text and layout, proof reading symbols embed fonts colour of print (black and white or colour) print colour separations crop marks Camera Ready Copy (CRC) prepare for mailing (mailmerge) save in appropriate file formats considering compression, resolution, colour depth, file size and image quality save files efficiently and effectively for intended use Evaluate the publication in terms of: colour meeting the design brief accessibility legislative constraints text/image fitting the brief Produce proof copies with a covering document: finish, paper quality binding Assessment This unit is centre assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have met all of the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT 3

Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements For this unit candidates are being assessed on their DTP skills and are required to use DTP software. It is not acceptable to use Word Processing software. Candidates will be expected to plan, draft, develop and then produce a range of documents eg newsletter, flyer, brochure, for a given scenario. The candidates should be provided with a scenario and a design brief from a client which covers one organisation so that corporate image and consistent house style can be considered by the candidate. The candidate must use the results of their review to plan their publication. For Assessment Objective 1, candidates need to make clear the purpose of each of their documents and the intended target audience. Candidates must produce design sketch plans, for each document, which includes evidence that the candidate has researched and evaluated different elements from a range of professionally produced publications from a range of different organisations. The design sketches can be hand-drawn or created on a computer but must be detailed enough to match the final publication. The design sketches must also consider house style, layout, corporate image and the content of the pages. The publications should include a variety of graphics some of which the candidate will need to create themselves. Candidates must evidence their research by stating their sources in a bibliography of their report in Assessment Objective 6. For Assessment Objective 2, candidates will need to create and customise templates. The templates must meet the design brief and must be saved appropriately. Screenshot evidence must be produced to show that the publication has been saved as a template. Candidates must indicate the elements that they have included in their template eg the margins,, grids, styles used. The styles could be headings, sub-headings, body text, footnotes, bullets, captions, headers/footers, tables, lists. For Assessment Objective 3, candidates need to create a the documents based on their design sketch plans in Assessment Objective 1. The candidate will need to collect elements to be included in the publication all elements do not have to be created by the candidate. The candidate can amend any of the text files in a text editor and manipulate the graphics in a graphic editing package. Candidates will also need to include at least one automated task. This assessment objective also includes the manipulation of images. Candidates will create complex shapes which are then used where appropriate within the document. They will combine objects to create more complex shapes. The term layering means to alter the order of overlapping objects, whilst grouping implies combining one or more objects together. All candidates will need to layer at least one graphic and text frame by overlaying a text frame over an image. For Assessment Objective 4, candidates are required to review the accuracy of their work and make changes as necessary. They must then print out one draft copy and proof read this, add any proof reading correction signs and make amendments as required. A final proof copy will then be printed. Higher level candidates will need to produce an additional final proof will need to be printed showing colour separations and crop marks. Candidates will need to show evidence of saving the publication in a suitable format. For Assessment Objective 5, candidates are required to produce a written report describing the final production stage using commercial printing process. The report will also include an evaluation of the finished publication in terms of; use of colour, meeting the design brief, what accessibility options, legislative constraints, sourced text and images meet the design brief, how fit 4 OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT

for purpose is the publication. The report will also outline the stages between producing a proof copy and the final printing of the publication by a commercial printer. Assignments may be provided by the centre or produced by the candidate. These assignments must relate to one business context and provide the opportunity for all the assessment objectives to be met in full. Signposting to Key Skills The unit contains opportunities for developing the Key Skill, and possibly for generating portfolio evidence, if teaching and learning is focused on that aim. Assessing staff will need to check each candidate s evidence against the specifications to ensure all evidence requirements have been met. Additional evidence may also be required.
