VDC Virtual Design and Cnstructin (VDC) is the integratin f Building Infrmatin Mdeling (BIM) t a prject. While 3D BIM files are useful fr visualizing hw the prject lks and fits int the surrunding envirnment, they are als becming an integral part f the entire cnstructin management prcess. VDC is a methdlgy that allws prject teams t incrprate prcesses using these smart mdels at the cre f every prject. These mdels are integrated t a shared database that will allw users t visually see the relatinships and impacts between resurces, csts, and time. Webcr cntinuusly innvates and implements these prcesses t help imprve the efficiency, quality, and transparency f cnstructin management. These prcesses encmpass elements using 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D, including cnstructability reviews, shp drawing creatin, clash detectin and crdinatin, cst estimating, scheduling, and life cycle r facilities management; and can als include many facets f quality cntrl thrughut the cnstructin prcess. The ASC Student Cmpetitin VDC Challenge is intended t prvide an pprtunity fr student teams t demnstrate their understanding f the VDC apprach t integrated cnstructin prject management thrugh digital means as well as expand it. Areas f Cmpetitin Student teams will be evaluated n their demnstrated understanding f VDC in these main areas: Lgistics and Crdinatin (2D & 3D), Scheduling & Prductin Cntrl (4D), Estimating (5D), Facilities Management (6D), and Cmmunicatin (written, verbal and presentatin). Prject integratin techniques will be utilized and teams shuld be flexible, pen-minded, and have the ability t quickly assimilate. The fllwing utlines the types f exercises which will be utilized in the cmpetitin prblem set, hwever all exercises may nt necessarily be used. It is suggested yu develp a basic understanding f each f the exercise types in preparatin fr the prblem. Lgistics & Planning (3D) The gal f these exercises is t demnstrate the ability t read cnstructin dcuments, understand site cnditins, use cnstructin knwledge t plan the jb and visually cmmunicate it. Identify key prject milestnes based n the prject schedule that require specific planning Interpret 2D drawings alng with 3D mdels t better understand the site cnditins Create 3D lgistics and cnstructin sequence graphics at each prject milestne t clearly demnstrate cnstructin lgistics fr a prject Create 3D animatins t cmmunicate changes in prject planning, schedule, and accessibility. Determine placement and lcatin f equipment and cnstructin aids (cranes, man-lifts, placing bms, trailers, tilets, fences, flagmen and ther) Webcr will prvide a small library f 3D elements fr use in Revit frmat, hwever teams are free t use alternative cntent. Prviding and dwnlading site element s level f pht-realism will nt be criteria fr judging, but rather the lgical use and placement f such items within the lgistics mdel There is n requirement t purchase site element/equipment mdels Identify site restrictins and recmmend slutins befre starting cnstructin Strategize at a high level and develp big picture ideas fr hw verall prject will be executed Utilize 3D mdel data in field layut applicatins such as Autdesk Pint Layut Design and Trade Crdinatin (3D) 1
The gal f these exercises is t demnstrate the ability t identify clashes between varius building systems, attempt t find pssible slutins, and dcument yur wrk. Uplad designers and subcntractrs mdels t a crdinatin platfrm Webcr will prvide access t BIM 360 Glue platfrm, Naviswrks, and 3D mdels fr uplad Access will be granted prir t the cmpetitin, after team registratin. See Pre-Event Deliverables belw. Determine the Prject Base Pint and its crdinates system. Run clash detectin, identify majr clashes, and prpse slutins Eliminate the clashes by mdifying building system s gemetry in native mdel(s) Generate crdinatin lg t demnstrate identified clashes and status f clash. Mdel-Based Estimating (5D) The gal f these exercises is t becme familiar with utilizing mdels fr design review and estimating, as well as generate a cmplete estimate in alignment with the level f develpment f the available design infrmatin. Use designer mdels t perfrm design review and analysis, prvide visual examples and evaluate alternative cst saving slutins Organize designer s mdels in such a way that it prvides accurate data fr estimating Extract take-ff quantities frm a mdel and arrange in an rganized structure t infrm the estimate Utilize the cst database prvided by Webcr. A detailed cst assembly and high level Grss Square Ftage (GSF) cst will be prvided if required by prblem. GSF calculatins accrding t the BOMA Internatinal standards. Understand hw these standards are applied t rganize cnstructin prjects and hw they can be applied t rganize mdels and databases. Prductin cntrl techniques are used t track against the plan, and make adjustments in the field r the plan, as necessary, t achieve the desired gal. Utilize Financial Dashbard reprting methdlgies fr cmmunicating prject infrmatin including cst, schedule, prcurement, etc. Facilities Management (6D) Frm design t pre-cnstructin, cnstructin t clseut, and clse ut t final prject turnver, the BIM prcess allws prject teams t utilize a wealth f data and infrmatin thrughut the life cycle f a prject. The final step f that prject life cycle is the transitin f infrmatin t facilities management after building hand ver, which when talking abut BIM, can be dne thrugh the 6D BIM. The 6D building infrmatin mdel gives us the ability t cnnect the Facilities Management prcess t the 3D Mdel s that Building Engineers can efficiently maintain buildings and its facilities nce cnstructin is cmplete. If the BIM mdel is thught f as a library f essential prject infrmatin, then why nt use that library t its fullest capabilities by adding infrmatin that can imprve the efficiency f perating and maintaining buildings. The gal f this exercise is t demnstrate an understanding f hw t use BIM sftware t embed imprtant equipment infrmatin int the As-Built 3D mdel s that a Building Engineer can have access t all relevant service and maintenance infrmatin thrugh the building infrmatin mdel. Ability t attach infrmatin t 3D mdel elements within the As-Built 3D Mdel Use prvided prduct data submittals and building cmmissining infrmatin t update mdel with desired facilities maintenance data Ability t hand ver the 6D mdel s that the end user can easily navigate and quickly find prject infrmatin Cmmunicatin Use graphic and written electrnic cmmunicatin t cmmunicate questins and slutins t judges. Clearly cmmunicate the team s apprach and understanding f the prblem during a team presentatin A3 Analysis A3 reprting and prblem slving techniques are methds f receiving a prblem, develping an analysis, and suggesting a crrective actin, all n ne piece f A3 sized paper. Teams shuld understand the cncept behind an A3 reprt and be able t use the technique as a way fr cmmunicating prblem slutins shuld prblem slutins be requested in this frmat. Visually there are many ways t rganize an A3 when develping a reprt, as such a template with desired infrmatin layut will be prvided with the prblem statement fr use in develpment f prblem slutins. Prjected cash flws File Sharing and Team Cmmunicatin Cmmunicatin and cllabratin methds will affect a team s verall perfrmance and will be cnsidered in judging. Cntemplate the methds in which the team will share files, mdel, and wrk n a single prject simultaneusly. Internet access is being upgraded at the htel this year. Accrding t the management staff at the Glden Nugget, high speed cnnectin shuld nt be an issue. Each rm has ne Ethernet prt, s hardware, such as a ruter, t share this cnnectin is recmmended. Hwever, technlgy is nt always perfect r reliable. Cnsider alternative means such as wireless tethering devices and setting up lcal netwrks between persnal cmputers. Pre-Event Deliverables While they will nt be graded r impact yur cmpetitin scre, we will be requesting a handful f pre-event deliverables as a methd fr verifying that yur teams have a basic understanding f, and access t, the tls that will help make yu as successful as pssible during the cmpetitin.
