The perfect entry system with a 3-year warranty and a price that might surprise you IBM System p5 185 Express Server responsiveness. As such, it is an excellent replacement for IBM RS/6000 150 and 170 servers in distributed environments. System p5 185 Express deskside server Highlights Great for application serving in distributed environments Exceptional price/performance through IBM PowerPC technology Flexibility to support Linux and UNIX applications Easy to buy, install and manage The new System p5 185 Express server is our lowest priced system based on the IBM Power Architecture with features designed for excellent and secure performance whether running AIX 5L or Linux applications. Buy it either as a deskside or 5U (five EIA units) 19-inch rack-mount server and get up to 2-way scalability and IBM leadership availability. The p5-185 Express can support critical applications such as application serving or distributed workloads all while helping improve availability and With leading-edge IBM PowerPC 970 processor technology and the VMX (Vector Multimedia extension) performance enhancement, the very affordable 64-bit symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) System p5 185 Express server offers significant price/performance benefits. And running Linux or UNIX operating system environments concurrently make the p5-185 Express an excellent complement to the System p5 Express family. Proven PowerPC technology The System p5 185 Express server harnesses the advantages of PowerPC 970 microprocessors by featuring one or two high-performance, highly reliable 64-bit 2.5 GHz processors with 1MB of L2 cache per processor. 64-bit addressing contributes to excellent performance by supporting large amounts

of memory allowing applications to keep more information accessible in high-speed memory, and enabling them to run faster by reducing the need to retrieve data from online storage. Memory can be expanded from 512MB to 8GB. A dual ported Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps controller provides exceptional network connectivity and flexibility. A dual channel Ultra320 SCSI controller also can offer high performance and direct access to internal storage and external SCSI devices. The integrated IDE controller supports up to two media bays. Four USB ports are available; two in the front and two in the rear. These integrated controllers can eliminate the need for additional adapters saving space and cost. The system provides a high level of internal expandability. The System p5 185 Express features five bays: three internal disk bays that can contain up to 900GB of Ultra320 SCSI internal disk storage and two 5 1 /4-inch half-high media bays for DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM or a tape drive, or a fourth Ultra320 SCSI disk drive. Five adapter slots are available: two 64-bit 133 MHz slots, two 64-bit 100 MHz slots and one 32-bit 33 MHz slot to provide backward compatibility for older 32-bit cards. A USB attached diskette drive is also available. Flexibility, reliability features The System p5 185 Express is designed to give clients the flexibility to run the AIX 5L and Linux operating systems concurrently. AIX 5L, IBM s industrial-strength UNIX OS, is built on a tradition of reliability, availability, security and open standards for businesscritical applications. The Linux operating system is known for its extensive set of open source applications and ability to rapidly deploy new or customized solutions. Linux distributions from Red Hat, Inc. and SUSE LINUX are supported. The System p5 185 Express derives many of the same RAS features as larger IBM System p5 Express models, helping keep the system up and running around the clock. It extends IBM s world-class RAS capabilities to an entry system by including a service processor, processor and ambient temperature monitoring, PCI bus parity and ECC memory, system management alerts, and auto reboot on power loss. System p5 185 rack drawer The resulting increase in system availability allows more work to be processed. Express offerings deliver price advantage and are easy to buy The System p5 185 Express platform is available in specially priced packages Express Editions designed to deliver outstanding business value to smaller and mid-sized businesses and departments of large enterprises while meeting the needs of many mission-critical applications. The System p5 185 Express, AIX 5L Edition and the System p5 185 Express, OpenPower Edition include popular, easy to order configurations with financial incentives on the hardware as well as the ability to order a discounted AIX 5L or Linux OS. Additional memory, disk drives or adapters or displays and external storage can be easily added to the package without impacting the original savings.

Easy to manage The cost of managing and deploying systems can be a key decision criterion for many companies. IBM and IBM Business Partners can work with a client every step of the way from acquisition, to design, to turnkey installation and migration and even to running the systems. The automated management tools of the System p5 185 Express server are designed to free the system operator from repetitive activities and potential disruptions, making it easier to manage. Features are provided for both UNIX and Linux environments to simplify the management of IT infrastructures and to help cut costs and improve application performance. IBM Director is available for the System p5 185 Express allowing seamless management integration with the rest of an IBM infrastructure. Infrastructure and industry-specific offerings IBM has committed resources and performed integration testing to develop relevant industry-specific solutions with outstanding performance and technological innovations. System p5 Express servers, middleware platforms, business partner and open source applications, and services are being combined to help clients quickly, easily, safely and cost effectively solve pressing problems. With support across the entire System p5 family including the System p5 185 Express, these integrated offerings recommend common starter configurations to cover a range of user requirements and provide blueprints on how to design, set-up, install and deploy an optimal infrastructure for common IT and industry-specific tasks. Clients needing highly available and powerful storage to support their System p5 Express servers can realize benefits derived from using IBM System Storage and TotalStorage solutions. IBM conducts comprehensive testing in System Storage laboratories under stress environments, including clustered configurations, to help ensure combined server and storage systems solutions have high reliability, interoperability and streamlined, efficient implementation. With an IBM TotalStorage, System Storage and p5-185 Express server solution, you can be assured your IT environment will meet today s and tomorrow s demanding needs. System p5 185 Express: Ideal for day-today processing and the bottom line Ask your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner about the System p5 185 Express server for workloads in distributed environments or for application serving. Available solutions span thousands of AIX 5L and Linux applications used in a wide range of industries including education, government, transportation, construction, wholesale and retail distribution, light manufacturing, services and professional groups. The system is an ideal fit for these industries because it has the functions, solutions and support needed at a competitive price.
