1 Hardware Announcement April 19, 2005 IBM TotalStorage 2104 Expandable Storage Plus 320 offers new high-performance disk drive capacity Overview The IBM TotalStorage Exp Plus 320 now offers the option of adding two new high-performance, drives. The new 300 GB disk drive operates at 10,000 rpm, while the 146 GB disk drive operates at 15,000 rpm, doubling the physical capacity offered for the 2104 to over 4 terabytes (TB). These new disk drives are packaged in a 1-inch (25-mm) form factor. Options for the new Ultra320 SCSI disk drives are available for both IBM 2104 Exp Plus 320 DS4 and TS4 disk enclosures. The DS4 model is designed to be rack-mounted and is suitable for use with multiple servers, while the TS4 is a stand-alone tower suitable for single server storage. Both come with your choice of a redundant power source or a cooling fan. The 2104 Exp Plus 320 provides up to 14 drives per enclosure, offers up to 4.2 TB physical capacity, and allows a combination of 10K rpm hot-swappable disk drives (73.4 GB, GB, and 300 GB), and 15K rpm hot-swappable disk drives (36.4 GB, 73.4 GB, and 146 GB). The IBM Exp Plus 320 disk enclosure line is designed to provide high capacity and high performance at affordable prices. Key prerequisites The IBM EXP Plus 320 attaches to IBM pseries and select RS/6000 servers with the following host adapters: PCI-X Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI Adapter (#5710, #5712) PCI-X Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI RAID Adapter (#5703, #5711) PCI Dual Channel Ultra 3 SCSI Adapter (#6203) PCI 4-Channel Ultra 3 SCSI RAID Adapter (#2498) PCI Dual Channel Ultra 2 SCSI Adapter (#6205) Support is available with pseries servers running AIX and Linux for pseries. 2 Description IBM s TotalStorage Expandable Storage Plus 320 (EXP Plus 320) is designed to help address storage needs of pseries server environments that would benefit from: Direct-attached, stand-alone storage for a single server Rack-mounted, direct-attached storage for multiple servers The latest in SCSI high-performance disk technology The EXP Plus 320 is designed to offer: Excellent performance at an attractive price High availability when combined with host-based RAID adapters Enclosure services to report disk enclosure problems to the server The DS4 and TS4 Models support up to 14 Ultra320 SCSI 10K and 15K rpm disk drives, with 10K capacities of 73.4, 146.8, and 300 GBs, with 15K options of 36.4, 73.4 GB, and 146 GBs. Within the EXP Plus 320 enclosure, these various capacities and speed drives can be mixed. A number of SCSI bus configurations are supported by the EXP Plus 320 models. When attached to a single host system, up to 14 disk drives can be configured per host adapter SCSI port in each EXP Plus 320 enclosure to meet large capacity requirements. In dual-host environments that require the optional second U320 Port feature (#2642) be installed, the EXP Plus 320 can be configured as two separate SCSI buses, each bus supporting up to seven disk drives. Each bus is attached to two independent host connections. The third option is in high-availability, dual-host clustered configurations utilizing high availability cluster multi-processing (HACMP ) for AIX, where the two host ports (requires feature number 2642) on the EXP Plus 320 are each connected to the clustered hosts on a single SCSI bus, and up to 12 disk drives enable nonconcurrent usage with failover support. The EXP Plus 320 has several options for power. The simplest uses a single AC power supply (#3430) with a fan unit (#3499). For dual redundant power supplies and ability to attach to two power sources, two AC power supplies (#3430) can be ordered. In Telco industry environments where -48 V dc is required, you can configure the DS4 Model with one DC power supply (#3448) and a fan unit (#3499), or for redundancy, two DC power supplies (#3448). The EXP Plus 320 Model DS4 can be mounted in one of several pseries racks, including the 7014-T00 and 7014-T42. The Model TS4 is a free-standing tower enclosure. Product positioning The new 300 GB, 10,000 rpm, Ultra320 SCSI disk drive and the new 146 GB, 15,000 rpm, Ultra320 SCSI disk drive are designed to allow users to configure their 2104 Exp Plus 320 for higher capacity computing solutions. You can choose to mix-n-match any of the available capacity disk drives in the same enclosure. The Exp Plus 320 uses Ultra320 technology, providing low-priced, scalable solutions for new and existing users. You have a choice of a variety of disk interfaces to choose from today. The choice should be based on attachment available within the server, performance, distance, and capacity required. Exp Plus 320 should be selected when you are considering storage that: needs to be placed close to the server (within 20 meters); requires capacity of no more than fourteen disk drives per host adapter; and demands the latest in SCSI technology performance.
