Basic ipad Use Your ipad: Taking a screen shot: Hold down the home key and then press and release the sleep/wake switch. The screen will white out for a moment and you have just taken a screen shot! The screen shot will appear in the Photos app. Hints: A quick double tap of the home button or a four finger swipe up will display open apps. If you then swipe right, you will see a shortcut to the volume and screen brightness. To minimize an app once it is open, touch the home button once or pinch with five fingers. To toggle between various open apps, tap the home button twice to view the open apps to select from. Alternatively, a four finger swipe to the right or left will take you to the other open apps as well. To help extend battery life, double tap the home button (or four finger swipe up) to see which apps are open and potentially draining your battery. Once displayed, simply tap and hold one of the apps until it jiggles. A minus sign will appear in the top left corner of the app. Tap the minus sign to close. 1

Settings: Tap your Settings icon on the home screen. This app opens the door to the settings of your ipad. Take a moment to explore the choices under General : Sounds, Locks, Restrictions Setting up a Wifi Connection: Tap your Settings icon on the home screen. On the left side, tap WiFi. (Make sure it is turned on) Choose a network. At CAIS, it will be CAIS-WiFi. At home, you will choose your home wifi. If the network is secure, you will need the password. (You should always choose a secure network--it will have a little padlock icon next to the name. Anyone can steal your information from an connection that is not secure, like in a coffee shop or airport.) Every time you go to a new location, you will be asked for the password of that location s wifi network. Arranging Apps on your ipad Home Screen To move an app on your screen, tap and hold it until it starts to jiggle. Drag it and drop it anywhere. To stop the jiggling, press the Home button. To delete an app, tap and hold until it jiggles, then press the little x that appears. To create a folder (a group of similar apps, like Books), tap and hold one of the apps you want to group together until it jiggles. Still holding it down, drag it on top of another app you want in the new folder. An app folder will appear, and you can name the folder. Press the home button once to make the name editor go away, and again to return to the home screen. Now the new folder will appear on your screen, and you can drag and drop other apps into it (when they are jiggling!) To access the apps in the folder, tap on the folder, then the app you want. To rearrange or rename, etc, tap and hold any app in the folder. Creating a Home Screen Bookmark 2

You can create a bookmark for a webpage. But you can also bookmark a website to your ipad s home screen. It will become an icon on your ipad. Use Safari to find the site or page you want. Tap the button at the top of the screen that looks like a box with an arrow jumping out of it. A drop-down menu will pop up. Choose Add to Home Screen. Opening Multiple Web Pages You can browse Safari and look at one page while holding your place on a different page! While on a web page, tap the plus sign button at the top right corner of the screen. A new page will open Close pages you don t want open anymore by tapping the little x in the corner of the page you are currently viewing Keyboard Shortcuts to Speed Up Typing on an ipad Tip #1: If you want to type special characters with accent marks (like the letter à or è), simply tap and hold the corresponding alphabet key for a while and it will pop up a list of related accented characters for you to choose from. If you release the key before making a selection, the choice will disappear. 3

Tip #2: If you are typing a line of text and would like to add a period at the end of a sentence, tap the space bar on the keyboard twice and it will automatically insert a period followed by a space. The next letter that you type will automatically be written in uppercase. Tip #3: The ipad will often automatically fill in words as you are typing. If it is the correct word, press the space bar. If it is not the correct word, close the word by tapping on the small x that appears above the word. Please note that the ipad will, at times, auto-fill a rather bizarre word, so proofread your work before you turn it in! Tip #4: The numeric keyboard shows the dollar ($) symbol by default. However, if you need to type the Pound or the Euro currency symbol, just hold the $ key and you ll see a list of alternative symbols in a pop-up. Tip #5: To insert the degree symbol in your text, switch to the numeric keyboard and hold the 0 key. Tip #6: If you want to change the style of quotation marks or if you need to use a longer dash punctuation mark instead of the default hyphen, hold the corresponding key as shown in the screenshot below: 4

Tip #7: Typing everything in all caps is often considered rude, but there can be instances where you may have to type two or more consecutive characters in uppercase (e.g., UNESCO or QWERTY). In the default setting, you ll to have to tap the Shift key after typing every single character or you can Enable Caps Lock under Settings > General > Keyboard and then double-tap the shift key to turn it into a caps lock key. The caps lock keys will stay blue until you press one of them again. Tip #8: When you are typing a website URL in the address bar of the Safari browser, there s a special.com key in the keyboard that you can tap to quickly complete the web address. However, if the website that you are trying to reach doesn t end with a.com, you can still use that key. Just hold it for a while and it will give you an option to choose other popular domain names including.edu,.org and.net. Tip #9: Just like the.com key in Safari lets you type domain URLs quickly, there s something similar in the Mail program of the ipad that will help you complete email addresses quickly. When typing an email address in the To: or Cc:/ Bcc: field of the Mail program, press and hold the dot (.) 5

key and you ll get a list of domain shortcuts in a pop-up to auto-complete the email address (you ll essentially save 3 key strokes). Tip #10: This is another useful keyboard trick that will help you quickly switch between numerical and alphabetical keyboards. Let s say you are typing a document and need to insert an email address in your text. Now the @ symbol is not available on the default ABC keyboard, so you ll first have to switch to the numeric keyboard (?123), tap @ and then again switch to ABC mode. That s like making three keystrokes for typing one key. To simplify, just press the?123 key, slide your finger to reach the @ key and then lift your finger up to release the key. You can use that trick to type numbers, punctuations marks, currency symbols and all other characters that are found only on the numerical keypad of your ipad. Two more exciting typing tips: To get an apostrophe quickly and easily, touch the exclamation point key and slide your finger upwards-- an apostrophe will appear. Just lifting your finger will make it appear on your document. To get quotation marks quickly and easily, touch the question mark key and slide your finger upwards-- quotation marks will appear. Lift your finger and they show up on your document. Editing Text: Copying and Pasting Sometimes your finger is too big to get to just the right letter when you want to edit something! To get to a precise spot, touch and hold for a second over the area you want to edit. A magnifying glass will appear with a cursor in it. Now you can move in any direction to the exact spot you need! When you release your finger, some options will appear, like Select, Select All, and Paste. You can ignore them and just start typing if you don t need those options. To copy and paste Touch and hold over any word in the text you want to copy. The Select/Select All pop-up menu appears. Choose Select. Some text will look highlighted and there will be blue dots at each end of the text. Tap and drag the blue dots so the highlighted are is exactly where you want it. Tap Copy. On the page where you want this text inserted, tap your place and then tap Paste. 6
