Acrbat XI - Gespatial PDFs Abut gespatial PDFs A gespatial PDF cntains infrmatin that is required t gereference lcatin data. When gespatial data is imprted int a PDF, Acrbat retains the gespatial crdinates. With the crdinates, yu can view and interact with the PDF t find and mark lcatin data. Gespatial data can be either vectr r raster based r a cmbinatin f bth. After yu imprt gespatial data int Acrbat, yu can use the data in a variety f ways: Find and mark lcatin crdinates. Measure distance, perimeter, and area. Change the crdinate system and measurement units. Cpy lcatin crdinates t the clipbard, and then use them t shw lcatins in several web mapping services. Create gespatial PDFs Yu can create a gespatial PDF in ne f these ways: Opening a gespatially enabled TIFF (GeTIFF) r JPEG 2000 file Geregistering a PDF map r scan f gespatial data When yu pen an imprted file, measurements, pint psitin, and length are displayed in gegraphic crdinates, which yu can change, measure, and mark up. Yu can als assemble a PDF map frm a variety f surces. Open GeTIFF and JPEG 2000 files GeTIFF files and JPEG 2000 files are raster images that yu can imprt as new dcuments r as new layers t an existing dcument. Acrbat preserves the gespatial crdinates embedded in the file. These files retain their gespatial data when they are imprted. If yu imprt these files t existing dcuments, their crdinate system is cnverted t the crdinate system f the dcument. 1. Chse File > Create > PDF Frm File. 2. Select the gespatially enabled file t imprt. 3. Select settings, and then click OK. Imprt shapefiles 1
Yu can imprt a shapefile as a new layer t an existing PDF. The shapefile must verlap with the current PDF map. Otherwise, it is nt imprted. If it verlaps nly partially, nly the part that verlaps the current PDF is imprted. A shapefile cnsists f several files with differing filename extensins. Acrbat requires bth the SHP file and the DBF file fr imprting. 1. Open a PDF map, and chse View > Shw/Hide > Navigatin Panes > Layers. 2. Select Optin n the Layer sidebar and click Imprt As Layer. 3. Brwse t the SHP file and select it. 4. Click Settings and change the Line Prperties t a slid line and the line clr t blue. Interact with gespatial PDFs When yu pen a gespatially enabled PDF, yu can find lcatins, measure distances, and add lcatin markers. Yu can als cpy crdinates t the clipbard fr use with a web mapping service. View the gespatial measuring tls by chsing Tls > Analyze panel. Gespatial tls n the Analysis panel. Use the Gespatial Lcatin tl t perfrm these tasks: View latitude and lngitude while the cursr is ver an area cntaining gespatial infrmatin. Mark a lcatin with a gespatial anntatin. Search fr a lcatin in a dcument. Find map lcatins 1. Open a gespatial PDF and chse Tls > Analyze > Gespatial Lcatin tl. 2. Right-click inside the map, and then click Find A Lcatin. 3. Type the latitude and lngitude values (degrees, minutes, secnds, r decimal) in the tw text bxes, and click Find. If at least ne lcatin is available, the lcatin is highlighted with a blue square and the page is centered n the highlighted lcatin. 2
4. If the PDF includes mre than ne map, click the Next r Previus buttn t view additinal results, if any. Multiple lcatins are available in several situatins: When a dcument cntains multiple maps (fr example, if a PDF cntains a smaller map within a larger map, such as a city within a map f a state r cuntry). When yu search fr a lcatin within the city, Acrbat finds it in bth the larger map and the city map. When a dcument cntains multiple pages f a map (fr example, if page ne is a map f a cuntry and page tw is a map f a state r city within the cuntry). 5. (Optinal) T add a cmment (such as a place name r address), click the lcatin marker, and then add the infrmatin in the cmment bx. 6. T end the search, right-click inside the map. Then select Hide Lcatin Search, t remve the search bxes. Mark gespatial lcatins 1. Open a gespatial PDF and chse Tls > Analyze > Gespatial Lcatin Tl. 2. Mve the muse pinter ver the dcument t view latitude and lngitude values f areas that cntain gespatial infrmatin. Right-click inside the map, and then d ne f the fllwing: T find a lcatin, click Find A Lcatin. Type the latitude and lngitude values, and click Find. T mark a lcatin with gespatial infrmatin, click Mark Lcatin. 3. (Optinal) T add a cmment (such as a place name r address), click the lcatin marker, and then add the infrmatin in the cmment bx. Measure distance, perimeter, and area n maps When yu pen a gespatial PDF, the Acrbat measuring tls read the gespatial infrmatin and measure distance and area instead f page r bject dimensins. Use the measurement tls t calculate distance, perimeter, and area n any gespatially enabled PDF. As yu mve the muse pinter ver cntent in the dcument, snap markers are shwn that indicate that yu are n a path r path end pint. Yu can als see the latitude and lngitude f yur cursr lcatin when the muse pinter is ver gespatial cntent. 1. Chse Tls > Analyze > Measuring Tl. 2. In the Measurement Tl display, select a measurement type: Distance, Area, r Perimeter. 3. Select a snap-t ptin: Snap t paths Snap t end pints Snap t midpints Snap t intersectins 4. D ne f the fllwing: 3
If yu are using the Distance tl, click where yu want t start the measurement, and then drag t the end pint and click again. The distance is displayed in the lwer-right crner. If yu are using the Perimeter tl, click the map in ne crner f the perimeter, and then drag t each crner. Click at each crner and then duble-click at the end pint. The infrmatin windw displays the perimeter size. If yu are using the Area tl, click the map at ne crner f the area, and then drag t anther crner. Click befre changing directins. Duble-click at the end t display the ttal area. 5. T finish the measurement, right-click and select Cmplete Measurement. Or, select Cancel Measurement. Cpy lcatin crdinates t the clipbard fr use with a web mapping service After yu find a lcatin n a gespatial PDF, yu can cpy the crdinates t the clipbard. Frm the clipbard, yu can paste the data int a web mapping service that reads latitude and lngitude crdinates. 1. Chse Tls > Analyze > Gespatial Lcatin Tl, and then right-click the lcatin n the map and chse Mark Lcatin. 2. Open the lcatin anntatin and cpy the lcatin infrmatin. Acrbat cpies the data in this frmat: latitude then lngitude, separated by a space. Paste the data int the address bar f a web mapping service that can interpret the lcatin data. Change measurement units within a dcument T change the type f measurement units, right-click inside the map with the Measuring tl and chse Distance Unit r Area Unit. Then select a measurement type. Change gespatial measuring preferences Yu can change the measurement units fr all gespatial PDFs in the Preferences dialg bx. Click Measuring (Ge) frm the Categries sectin.
