Update Guide for Zilog 1ME Software August 28, 2009 This installation should take between 10-20 minutes depending on hardware configurations and current software state.
Section 1 STOP! Do I have a Zilog Module? The remainder of this manual is for Zilog 1ME Panels with a BLACK Fader Bar Handle ONLY!! If you have a 2ME Panel, OR if you have a SILVER Fader Bar Handle on your 1ME panel, your firmware will update itself automatically upon installation of the latest version of the Broadcast Pix software as soon as you load a show, and you may close these instructions. Existing panel firmware must be at least 5/05/04 to support flash loader. 1. Begin by removing all cables from the back of the 1ME Control Panel, including Power and Ethernet. 2. Connect a Straight Through Serial Cable (NOT a Null Modem Serial Cable) to the left serial port on the back of the workstation. (If you have an ibob or a Router, you can use that serial cable unless it has any pins removed from the male end. If you have an adaptor cable that removes Pin 3 then remove that adaptor from the cable and Control Panel.) Figure 1 Serial Connector 3. Connect the other end of the serial cable to the back of the Control Panel, but DO NOT connect the power to the Control Panel yet. 4. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal. This will open the HyperTerminal application. 5. If this is the first time HyperTerminal is opened on your Broadcast Pix Workstation, you may see Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4. These windows only show up on the first use of Telnet. If you do not see them, skip to Step 9. 6. On the Default Telnet Program window, click Yes to make HyperTerminal your default telnet program. (See Figure 2) Figure 2 Default Telnet Window 7. On the Location Information window, type your area code (or any 5 digits, it won t make a difference) into the first text box, and then click OK. (See Figure 3) Figure 3 Location Information Window Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 3
8. On the Phone and Modem Options window, click Cancel to close the window. (See Figure 4) Figure 4 Phone and Modem Options Window 9. When the New Connection window opens up, type a name into the Connection Window Name field. We used Panel Update, but it can be anything. Then select an icon that you would like to use for your connection. This can also be anything. Then click OK. (See Figure 5) Figure 5 New Connection Description Window 10. On the Connect To window, change the Connect Using field to COM1. Click OK. (See Figure 6) Figure 6 Connect Using COM1 Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 4
11. On the COM1 Properties window, change: 12. Bits per second to: 57600 13. Stop bits to: 2 14. Flow control to: None Make sure all other settings match Figure 7 by default. Click OK. Now you will be looking at a blank HyperTerminal screen. At the top, you should see the icon you selected and the name you typed in. In the window itself you should see a blinking cursor. 15. Now hold down the Spacebar and with your other hand (Or another person), connect the Power into the back of your 1ME panel without letting go of the spacebar. Figure 7 COM1 Properties Your screen should now look like Figure 8, but this often does not connect on the first try. If your screen does not resemble Figure 8, just repeat Step 15 again, being careful not to let go of the spacebar. 16. If this step continues to give you trouble, try closing HyperTerminal and repeat these directions from Step 4. Then on Step 10, select COM2 instead of COM1. Figure 8 HyperTerminal successfully connected to the 1ME Panel If this does not work either, try a different serial cable. If none of the above works, please contact our Technical Support Team. 17. Let go of the Spacebar. Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 5
18. Type the letter H. (Nothing in this program is case sensitive, and for the commands we will enter, you do not have to press Enter after you type a command letter.) (See Figure 9) 19. Type E Figure 9 HyperTerminal Help Menu This will show you your MAC Address Number. You will need this at the end of the installation, so it s a good idea to write it down Figure 10 Note MAC Address Note: Step 20 through Step 27 have to be done fairly quickly, so read through them before you try it or you could time-out the connection and have to try again. (See Step 28 for more information) Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 6
20. Type L Figure 11 Opening the "Send" Connection to the 1ME 21. Select Transfer>Send File (See Figure 12) Figure 12 The Send File Menu 22. Click Browse... (See Figure 13) Figure 13 the Send File Window Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 7
23. Browse to C:\BroadcastPix\hardpanel and double-click the hardpanel.hex file*. (See Figure 14) 24. *If this is a system that has more than one panel on the same workstation, please use the hardpanel-2nd-panel.hex file for the second panel. 25. *If you have two systems sharing one router, please use the hardpanel.hex file for the panel connected to the system with the 192.168.53.250 IP address, Figure 14 Browse to BpPanel.hex and the hardpanel-2nd-system.hex file for the panel connected to the system with the 192.168.53.240 IP address. 26. Change the Protocol to Xmodem (See Figure 15) 27. Click Send Figure 15 Xmodem Protocol 28. Check to see that the Xmodem file send window is showing movement in the Packet field as well as the File bar to confirm that the file is sending. Let it run until the window closes on its own. If there is no movement in these fields, simply Cancel out of this window and return to Step 20 and try again. It will take less time now that Figure 16 Sending BpPanel.hex through Xmodem Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 8
Windows will remember where your file is located. 29. Now your HyperTerminal window should tell say Done. (See Figure 17) Figure 17 Done Sending BpPanel.hex 30. Type M 31. Type in your MAC Address from Step 19 above. You ll notice that as you type HyperTerminal formats your MAC Address to contain a colon : between each number. Do not try to add these characters yourself. Figure 18 Enter MAC Address 32. Confirm your new MAC address by pressing E and seeing that your MAC address matches the one in Step 19. Figure 19 MAC Address Confirmation Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 9
33. Now, close HyperTerminal by clicking the Close button in the upper-right corner of the window. 34. Click Yes to disconnect. (See Figure 20) 35. You may want to save this connection and open it next Figure 20 Disconnect time you update your panel, or just run through the steps the same way next time. It s your choice if you want to save the connection here. If you do save it, save it in the default folder that it prompts you to put it in because that is the folder it will look in next time you select Figure 21 Save Connection? Open from the drop-down menu. (See Figure 21) 36. Next, disconnect all cables from the back of the 1ME Panel, including the Power Connection. This will restart the panel, which is very important after an update. 37. Then, re-connect all your cables to the way you had them originally. If you have a router or an ibob, be sure to re-connect the serial cable between that device and the 1ME Panel. Broadcast Pix 1ME Panel Update Guide Page 10
