Rev Firmware Upgrade for ACRC100 Series Objective This Service Bulletin defines the procedure for upgrading the firmware for the InRow ACRC to version AOS and APP This upgrade is mandatory on all ACRC products (i.e. ACRC100, ACRC101, ACRC102, and ACRC103). Problem ACRC units that were built prior to June 1, 2006 are likely to have a beta version of firmware that was not intended to be released to the customer. The released version of firmware (apc_hw03_aos313_acrc310.exe) has a number of critical improvements to cooling operations. Solution Upgrade the firmware on all units that do not have RC App: v3.1.0 and AOS ver: v3.1.3 as shown on the local display (Main>About InRow RC, second screen). Note that the text must match exactly. Any letters following the numbers (e.g. v3.1.0m ) indicate that the firmware is beta and that it must be upgraded. Detailed Procedure Article I. Introduction This procedure describes various methods that can be used to upgrade the firmware for the InRow AC products. It is intended for service personnel using computers that have Microsoft Windows XP. This procedure does not address all methods for upgrading firmware for these products. Additional information can be found in the product s User s Guide. Article II. Getting Started with the Upgrade In order to perform a firmware upgrade you must have at least the following: 1. A computer with a network or serial port 2. The firmware for the particular product being upgraded 3. The administrator user name (default: apc) 4. The administrator password (default: apc) Depending on the method used to upgrade the firmware you may also need: 1. A standard CAT 5 cable: (e.g. APC PN: 3827BK-10) 2. A crossover CAT 5 cable: (e.g. APC PN: ) 3. A null modem serial cable: (APC PN: ) 4. USB to Serial (9-pin) adaptor You can find the latest firmware release for your APC product on the APC web site Each upgrade tool is specific to an APC product. Locate and download the upgrade tool for the APC product of interest (i.e. apc_hw03_aos313_acrc310.exe). Make sure that you use the upgrade tool that corresponds with your APC product. 2 The next step is to determine the method by which you will upgrade the firmware of the InRow AC product. The remaining sections of this procedure identify various methods for upgrading the firmware based on the network accessibility. Article III. Is My Unit Accessible on a Network? The easiest method of upgrading the firmware of an InRow AC product is by accessing the unit over the network. The unit can only be accessed via the network if it is connected and properly configured. The Network configuration can be found via the local display interface (Main>Configure Network>IP Address). If the address is not , then it is probably accessible on the network as long as the proper network cable is connected. If so, proceed to section Article IV to upgrade the firmware via the network. If the unit is not configured for network access contact the system administrator or proceed to section Article V for upgrading the firmware via direct connection using the Ethernet or serial port. Article IV. If Unit is Accessible on a Network Section 4.01 User s Network If the unit is accessible from a computer on the user s network the upgrade procedure is very simple. Run the upgrade tool (e.g. apc_hw03_aos313_acrc310.exe) by double clicking on the file and follow the instructions presented. The upgrade tool will prompt you for a destination directory to store the firmware files, the IP address of the unit to upgrade, the user name, and the password. The tool will provide status of the upgrade, automatically save existing event and data logs, and let you know when the upgrade is complete. Section 4.02 ISX Manager Private Network If the unit to upgrade is on the private side of an ISX Manager, first connect your computer via a CAT 5 cable to an available port of the hub or switch on the private side of the ISX Manager (connected to APC LAN port). Your computer will automatically receive an IP address from the ISX Manager. Once your computer has received an IP address, run the upgrade tool as described in Section Article V. If Unit is Not Accessible on a Network If the unit is not connected to a network or is not properly configured to operate on the network, a direct connection from a computer via a network or serial cable can be made to the unit. Section 5.01 Network Port Connection Assign a static IP address to your computer. From your desktop, right click on My Network Places and select Properties. Right click on the Local Area Connection that represents your network card and select Properties. ATXXXXX REV 00 2 of 6
On the General tab select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties. On the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, write down the current settings in order to restore them after the upgrade. Once this is complete, enter the following: ATXXXXX REV 00 3 of 6
Once the information has been entered, select OK. Next select Close from the Local Area Connection Properties window. (A reboot may be required in order for your computer to accept these settings. You will be notified if this is the case.) Your computer is now configured with a static IP address. Warning: Do not connect your computer to an existing network with these TCP/IP settings. The next step is to assign an IP address to the InRow AC product. Write down the current settings in order to restore them after the upgrade. From the local display interface first configure the Boot Mode to Manual (Main>Configure Network>Boot Mode). Next set the IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway as shown (Main>Configure Network>IP Address): IP: SM: GW: Now that your computer and the InRow AC product have their IP addresses, a connection can be made between the two devices. Typically a CAT 5 crossover cable is used to ATXXXXX REV 00 4 of 6
make this connection, however, some computers such as the IBM T40 can use either a standard CAT 5 or a crossover cable. Once the cable is in place, run the upgrade tool as described in Section When the upgrade process is complete for all units, remember to restore your computer s TCP/IP settings back to the previously recorded values. Also, restore the Boot Mode of the InRow AC product back to its previous settings (Main>Configure Network>IP Address) (Main>Configure Network>Boot Mode). Section 5.02 Serial Port Connection (XMODEM) To use XMODEM to upgrade the firmware for a single unit that is not on the network: 1. Run the upgrade tool (i.e. apc_hw03_aos313_acrc310.exe) by double clicking on the file. The program will prompt you for a destination directory to archive the extracted files. Enter a directory name and click Next. When the program displays the window Extraction Complete, stop the program by clicking the X on the top right of the window (do not click the Finish button, which will attempt to download the firmware via the network). The two binary files (.bin) are now in the directory you selected. These are the files you will need to download to the unit. Note that there will be additional files extracted, however, only the.bin files are required for the upgrade. A third.bin (apc_hw02_aos_202.bin) file may also be extracted, but should not be required for upgrades to the InRow AC cooling products. 2. Select a serial port at the local computer and disable any service which uses that port. Connect the null-modem cable that came with the unit ( ) to the selected port and to the serial port on the unit. Use of a USB to Serial (9-pin) adapter may be required if only USB serial ports are available on your computer. 3. Run a terminal program (such as HyperTerminal), configure the selected port for 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control, and save the changes. 4. Press Enter twice to display the User Name prompt and log in. 5. To start an XMODEM transfer: Select option 3 System Select option 4 Tools Select option 6 File Transfer Select option 1 XMODEM Type YES at the prompt to continue with the transfer. ATXXXXX REV 00 5 of 6
Select the appropriate baud rate from the menu provided (a higher baud rate allows for faster firmware upgrades). Also, change the terminal program s baud rate to match the one selected, and press Enter. Note that the terminal session may need to be disconnected to access the baud rate settings and change them. This can be done on HyperTerminal by selecting the hang-up icon or on the menu by selecting Call > Disconnect. Reconnect if required by selecting Call > Call. The InRow AC unit is now ready to receive a file serially via XMODEM. 6. From the terminal program s menu initiate the transfer (Transfer > Send File for HyperTerminal) and select the binary AOS file (e.g. apc_hw03_aos_313.bin) to transfer. Be sure to use the XMODEM (or XMODEM-CRC) protocol and select Send. After the XMODEM transfer is complete, the unit will automatically restart. 7. Set the baud rate of the terminal program back to 9600 to verify the update. Press Enter twice to display the User Name prompt and log in to the console. The upper right corner of the console should display the new AOS version. 8. Repeat the same procedure (steps 5-7 above) to upgrade the InRow AC firmware, substituting the application file (e.g. apc_hw03_acrc_310.bin) for the AOS file, and verifying that the APP version is shown as properly updated on the console screen just below the AOS version. Priority This upgrade mandatory for all ACRC units. Financial Aspect This upgrade will be handled as warranty. Test After Rework Not Applicable ATXXXXX REV 00 6 of 6
